I love how every play through I’ve seen of this game, everyone who plays instantly becomes just deadly serious and freaked out the moment the *GOD IS COMING* chant begins.
I mean, everyone would be if out of nowhere, you heard freaking angel chants coming from the sky, increasingly getting louder 🙃
It’s such a perfect, hair-raising concerto of panic. There’s been little noise, no music, and the only thing to cause noise is the player within the entire game, until that last part.
@@kexard Surely there's an art to this sort of thing. Related, there's a robbery gone wrong movie called "The Asphalt Jungle" (1950) and it has *no music in it whatsoever* except for the intro, one jukebox scene, and the outro. No ambient music, mostly nothing else but dialogue, gunshots, maybe a few engines and a cutting torch sound.
Because there's no music at all except in those spots, the Jukebox Scene is a highlight, but I often ask myself why. I keep thinking the movie's just a way of showing a world full of emptiness in crime. But the old man gave the teenagers some jukebox money, so I wonder if maybe the idea is that he saw and finally understood something other than what he talked about doing, which would have been perving on young women, as he probably intended to do when he gave jukebox money. Though at the same time, the music might just have been a way of catching himself. He was on the run, and was caught just outside that diner. He'd have gotten away if he left immediately, instead of staying to watch a teenage girl dance to the jukebox music.

@@matohunter3564 there's a story at the signal tower about a man who bought a paint brush which supposedly had the hairs of a beautiful lady, but was scammed, so he painted what he thought the lady would have looked like with that paintbrush. Then a witch helped him turn the painting alive but since its a waist up painting, the lady only had the top half of her body and was screaming and stuff. The man had to mercy kill the girl with an axe, and then they made a stew with the girl's corpse and both died because it was poisoned. Kinda an abrupt ending

The build up to that last scare is so perfect. It made me jump when I played it and still made me jump watching this and knowing what was about to happen.

well, the squirrel call sounds like a Corbeau howling danger. So due to this comment, I had to look up chinchilla sounds to guess what it sounds similar to; Firstly I understand why you have one as your pet, secondly it sounds somewhat like a child to mother, so it may be confused with that or another animal calling danger depends on what kind of "freaking out" actions took place. I'll see for a rabbit, as I have 2 killer rabbits home with me { referring to how they look in minecraft, I am not aware if they have a name. }

I gave my wife the squarcass treatment and she absolutely LOVED it! The rejuvenating oils of a squirrel's pelt did wonders for her skin! It's incredible the kind of nutrients a squirrel's antenna can absorb while rummaging around in the dirt. Plus all the urine haha! It did cost an arm and a leg, but luckily the squirrel's regenerative abilities have us covered!

Based on my analysis of the story of the game, the painted lady story is a sort of metaphor about the main character, who is already insane and is rationalizing for murdering his own wife and covering her corpse with the carcasses of squirrels that the main character hunted to make her look "beautiful" and pretend that his wife is still alive. Just like what was written in the painted lady story about "the stew being poison" and "art will eventually destroy the artist", the man has been hallucinating and died after eating the squirrels that died near his home from poison. All in all, the game is ominous and eerie. As always, brilliant work by David Szymanski in developing and making Squirrel Stapler.

Also another thing, I saw a clip of you talking on a podcast about that Kurzehgstat or however you spell it about but you talked about spending 90% of your time with your parents by the time you are 18. @@nagabe6394 Oh, that part I understand completely. What threw me off a bit at the end was that I was expecting something else to greet the man.
*Spoiler*
I thought it was going to be his dead wife or something. I based that off of the note that 'she' left him about not wanting the squirrel skin and wanting hers back, but If her husband didn't give the skin back to her, she wanted his instead.
The ending was quite spooky in the end, so that's all that matters.
This reminds me of my cousin Jack who has an irrational fear of squirrels. He says they're always watching and can attack at any time. Even in an apocalyptic scenario, from nuclear to flooding, they will survive and therefore have a grudge against humanity

@@coolcatkcs It took me far too many tries to see that, and in the end had to go frame by frame. Graphic blur makes it hard to tell if anything is really there or just a visual quirk of rendering. There is just one frame at the 37 second mark for anyone wanting to see it. Directly below Mark and kind of hard to make out if not looking for it.
Of course, the real question is did Lixian do it or was it already there?

I fell asleep to this video and it was so bizarre. I always forget that sometimes the things you hear irl can happen in your dreams. I remember I was in some plaza and there was a Starbucks, and all I remember otherwise is this dad and his son and the son was playing on a tablet or some other device and it was like full blast volume, “BANG” and just loud noises and such coming from the tablet. All until I woke up and saw this video again lol

Games that start off so quietly and slowly progress into madness are some of the best games, I swear. They just lure you into a false sense of security, making jumpscares 10x better, no matter how cheesy it might be
There's even a side story that gets gradually more gruesome, but then abruptly ends, making you unsure if there's actually something else scary going to happen (which Mark missed btw)

That chanting at the end made my whole body go cold. Felt like something was squeezing my lungs. Weird how something so bizarre can be so scary lol
It’s scary because it’s bizarre. It doesn’t make sense. One’s mind can’t wrap itself around it so it keeps trying. The countdown forces your mind to try harder and break a little more. It really feels like the cosmic horror genre to me.

As an aspiring game dev this is exactly the kind of horror I want to produce. Stuff so RIDICULOUSLY terrifying it fills you with utter fear from the sheer idea of the game. That end was amazing. The terror it elicited was palpable
Is this sarcasm? The entire game was almost comically absurd with its weird obsession of squirrels and then it just ends, I feel like it was supposed to be a joke game. Don't get me wrong, if you want to make a game like this go for it there's a genre for everything, but I didn't feel the terror

Fr, I love it was about Shub-Slur dude because every single horror game about Lovecraft usually focuses on Cthulhu or Dagon rather than the many other elder gods
@@EveTater I would first like to say that your opinion is different from others. Second, I did feel a sense of growing dread and terror throughout the game. Now I don't know a whole lot about proper game design like this (although I hope to one day), I feel that while it was pretty comedic in its obsession, it unnerved me a lot. Especially when the "wife" moved at the end of the 3rd day.
@@colewegner7576 very true, the game goes for a very specific type of horror the best i can describe it would be
"slow burn, lovecraftian" while the game is still quite funny(like how the squirrels dont have animations and just float) but this works in the games favour as it disarms you enough that when something unsetteling does happen like the wife moving and god it just ends up grabbing you a lot more. Now i do get where EveTater is coming from, not everyone is gonna find this game scary or even creepy for the people who enjoy combat or adrenaline pumping horror (resident evil and puppetcombo games being a good example for both) they won't find much value in a game like this but for people who like more slower, simple horror like slender or just a bit more of a psychological angle like silent hill this game delivers!

with these kinds of games it's not the actual jumpscare that does it, it's the dread, that feeling that you know one's gonna happen soon
its the same with iron lung, the whole game is basically just increasing the tension until it let's it all out with a creepy jumpscare at the end. the problem with these games though is that they really only work on you once or twice because after the first playthrough, you know it's coming so it becomes less effective.

After watching a couple times, you realize the jumpscare at the end is as cheap as it can get, and the build up is what actually makes it scary, but it does it immaculately. Besides the great sound design and pacing of the finale, I think the rest of the game’s progression from knowing the protag is crazy from the start, peaceful and continuous hunting, and knowingly angering forces more unnatural than you makes the ending more dreadful.
I don't know why I expected him to do sensible thing of stapling the squirrel skins to his beloved, and not the whole squirrel 😂😅
What I find funny is he says he isn't scared of the squirrel god and I'm like "that's because he's king of the squirrels"
the dread x games are so, so good. every collection has a couple stinkers, but they're all worth the price and have so many good games in them, Squirrel Stapler definitely being a highlight of the second entry
i love the absolute horror everyone experiences when the discordant choir starts chanting "GOD IS HERE." def my favorite part of the game

This game feels like it would lend itself to a really cutesy art style - like a looney toons esque aesthetic
The editors changing the c in careful to and f when he says "be fareful" had me laughing so hard.
