  • Mastering is often a daunting process in itself, but it doesn't have to be! Studio One's Project Page is a powerful section in the DAW that gives you the tools to more easily focus on mastering across your entire album, without losing the flexibility of going back to make mix changes to your song.
    What exactly does this mean?
    In this tutorial, PreSonus software specialist Joe Gilder dives into how to bring your songs into the Project Page for Mastering, and why this seamless process makes Studio One the best DAW to master your audio.

    I started using the Project page from the day I started using SO 4 years ago. Makes life a lot easier and the loudness check is incredibly useful. A very useful thing to use Projects for is to park your ideas. At present I have 2 projects where I park ideas, one is for instruments the other not. My instrumental project has about 20 songs ideas in it. Most around 30-60 seconds in length. This is an extremely convenient way to organize your ideas. So when the mood takes me I open the project and listen to the ideas to see if anything sparks at the moment. Or, if I am working on a song and need something I will often go and check that project to see if one of them would fit. It's almost like I use the Project page as a container for musical lego pieces. 😁

    Joe great video.... Can you spend some time on a video in this page with relation to the levels and balancing between song to song... Which meter to use and how to go about making the adjustments??? Please and thank you.

    Joe, we rarely see an in depth show on the Project Page. You know, The desert phase? All the cool editing and clean intro and song ends/fades. I think I’m not the only one of your excellent followers that still burn CD’s, lol.

      I feel we lose when we completely get rid of CD's. I still buy CD's and some LP's, but yes, I stream too.

    Joe! If you don't quit talking down "Waterfall" in the spectrum meter, their gonna get rid of it...and I'm one of the "oddballs" that use it constantly for metering. It's almost the only one I use. It actually is a VERY good tool! You can “see” the signal, cymbal hits, bass, lead guitar lines, and where they are on the scale (that alone is a great ear training tool) and how hot the signal is. It’s a GREAT tool.
    Love you guys!

    I see you only used the Master section where you put your limiter. I haven't used that section at all. Instead, I use the Post section below it, and in there, I put my "analyzer" plugins, like SPAN, the Waves WLM loudness, and also the ADPTR Metric A/B, which has 6 functions, plus the ability to download 15-16 reference tracks. Instead of a limiter, I use the Mixtool in each song, to adjust the loudness level to -14 LUFS "post", as I also like to double-check loudness with 2-3 different sources. I do like that Loudness check you used, and then just adjust the Mixtool. Thanks! I think the Project Page is the best module they have.

    Love the Project page! Once I've added a song to a project I always add "Update the Master File" when I save any changes to the mix in the song file. Love it. So easy.

    i do a lot of slicing and dicing and have always shied away from automating the volume slider.... until recently when it realized that that is where volume automation SHOULD happen nearly all the time, but this seems like a great way to get things more even, as you mentioned. i'll definitely be trying it.
    thanks!

      I do the prep on the Project page but find using an AI to check and see how close my finished product turned out. I can then return to the project page and make adjustments to complete mastering the project. To each his own but Studio One is brilliant overall.

    When you update a Project Page Session by clicking the red wrench icon and Studio One creates a Mixdown version of the updated Mix. Does it bypass all of the Plugins on the Stereo Out Bus, or is the Limiter you had on the Stereo Buss included into the Mixdown that gets created for the Projects Page updated version of the song? Like how does that work?

    Stem mastering and unity gain is 2 feature am looking for too inside the project page. Stem Mastering can only be done in the song page which requires creating another song.

    10.7, It is 10.7 seconds if you are rounding. The rendered time was 10.664, so if rounding to the tens place, this would be 10 point 7 seconds.

    The most annoying thing is that if you change the name of a Song that's in a Project it will become disassociated - the Project will think the song file has disappeared. Would be nice if you could change Song names and it would automatically update and keep the file linked to the Project it's in.

    Tough crowd in the comments so far. But we newbys can use a little nudge to venture into the Project Page. I’m peeking my nose over the mastering fence just now. I think I can do a crude job of dialing in the LIFS spec. But I just took my latest mix to a mastering engineer in town, who let me sit with him while he brought new life into an already pretty good mix. He worked a number of magic tricks that brought out individual instruments, using some tightly targeted plugins I’ve never heard of - working in Pro Tools. I’ll never be able to do that, even if I can set a loudness level for streaming. So what is mastering for, exactly? Depends on your needs.

    Studio One and the Project Page are amazing. However, the True Peak metering is not accurate and needs fixing. When I use a high end True Peak Limiter and Metering plugin and set the True Peak to -0.1dB on my Limiter, Studio One indicates clipping on its True Peak metering. This is incorrect and can be misleading.

    • @HomeStudioCorner
      @HomeStudioCorner 18 днів тому

      This is working properly. No limiter can prevent inter-sample peaking. That's why a lot of mastering engineers (myself included) recommend setting the ceiling at -1 dB. The behavior you're experiencing is expected, if you're going to set your ceiling that high.

    • @earledaniels4539
      @earledaniels4539 17 днів тому

      @HomeStudioCorner HI Joe, I understand the theory behind intersample peaks but my point is a 3rd party plug-in meter shows I am not peaking yet Studio One says that I am.
