How To Duplicate A Track In Logic Pro X

In this logic tutorial, I keep things beginner friendly and share shortcuts to duplicate tracks in Logic Pro X!
🛠️ Under The Hood 🛠️
There are two quick ways to duplicate a track in Logic Pro.
🧰 The logic shortcut (via keyboard)
🧰 The press of a button (located above the track headers)
After using one of these methods- you'll notice that any plugins or fx have been copied to your duplicate track. However, any contents of your original track (audio or MIDI) have NOT been copied over.
To duplicate a track WITH content, follow the steps below:
1️⃣ Click on your original track (so all its content is highlighted).
2️⃣ Hold down the "option" key on your keyboard.
3️⃣ Without releasing the "option key," use your mouse to hover over any part that is highlighted.
4️⃣ Now click and drag those contents down to the duplicated track.
5️⃣ After lining up the duplicated contents on with the original track contents release your mouse, followed by releasing the "option" key.
🔔 Remember, the "option" key must be held all the way from step 2 THROUGH step 5. Otherwise, the original track contents won't be copied.
🎉 Your track has now been completely duplicated! Happy cloning 🌌

Great video. Useful tips. Is there a way to do this for drum kits? For example, I have a slightly tweaked custom TR 808 drum kit track and I want to make a duplicate track with all the same settings and regions. I haven’t found a solution aside from manually doing each kit piece track and setting. Thanks!
Hey Heber, are you referring to the "drum machine designer" in logic? If so, I just tried duplicating the master channel... and it DID bring along any tweaks the original had. Hope this helps! Happy to troubleshoot more to help out 👊🏻

Totally know what you mean! I searched and searched and couldn't find a shortcut that duplicates the track AND brings along any audio/midi... it's frustrating, maybe a future update will allow for this. In the meantime, "opt + click & drag" is the fastest way I know! 👊🏻

This will duplicate all the music content inside the newly duplicated track! Hope this helps! 😊 🎼🎷
How do you paste the tracks with exact measures? thanks
Hey there, so if I understand your question correctly- to paste the tracks with the exact measures you'll just need to make sure the playhead is on the measure where you want the "paste" to begin. Hope this helps! Let me know if I can clarify anything 👊🏻

Got you Alon! Do you mean the "option" key? It generally sits between the "Command" and the "Control" key - it's located on the left side of the bottom row of keys 👊🏻
No way to duplicate the track including the content with only one click or key shortcut?
Fabio, awesome question- I have not figured out how to do that yet! As far as I know, that is not possible with one click or via key shortcut. Now that I’m thinking about it though… maybe it’s possible to program a custom shortcut to do that? I’ll let you know if I come across anything 👊🏻
Of course you can copy the contents as well as the track with one clk
