    I had an issue once with a guest room deposit when I checked out. no issue, the owner just was apparently in Cambodia gambling and in no hurry to return. The desk girl was powerless. OK. I called the tourist police. A cool middle aged cop showed up with a young assistant. I explained things, showed the receipt. Gave him the owner's phone number and showed him the several text messages she acknowledged and responded to but was not coming to town any time soon. Cop called her. She then texted me, and she was irate, lambasted me, yelled at me for calling the cops, etc. I still did not get the money until the next morning, but since I was still in town, that was OK.

      I had the same thing. Except the girl told me the "boss" wouldn't be back before I paid the last month's rent. So I just gave the last month's rent minus the deposit they owed me. She tried to tell me that's against the rules and I must play full. And the deposit will be paid into my bank account. I laughed and said I don't even have a bank account anymore. She said thats my problem and had the dirtiest look on her face like I shat in her fried rice. Like I'm a piece of crap for ripping them off. I gave the exact amount of cash I owed minus the deposit and laughed as I walked away. Don't they know how stupid it was? Like I'm the asshole? 🤣

      In the USA we leave a tip sometimes in the room for the maids. More than twice I was checking out and they want to check the room. I wonder if the front desk wants to see if there is a tip in the room. Then one time in Vietnam where there was a little bit of food on the towel and they wanted $4 for a cleaning fee! I refused and said I will leave a bad review. Then they said it's ok just go.....

    Only some suntan lotions are banned. The banned lotions are those containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor or butylparaben. I checked mine, and the SPF 50 was ok, but the SPF 70 contained oxybenzone. Besides that great advice, and there were some new things for me to remember not to do. Keep up the good work. 👍

    Solid advice.
    I was snorkeling in Cozumel, Mexico a few weeks ago. No sunscreen of any kind was permitted, even those formulated to be ‘reef safe’. I think it’s a good thing. I snorkel in a rash guard shirt anyway, and wear a hat in the sun. I’m getting older and don’t need to damage my skin anymore than I already did when I was younger. And I hope that coral reefs will survive, although sunscreens aren’t the only thing threatening them.

    Best drinking tip? Pay for one drink at a time. It's the wisest advice to anyone. Bring small bills knowing you will have 4 drinks or whatever. Thailand is a movie. Enjoy the show and don't get involved with anything.......PERIOD. I've seen some crazy things from people acting a fool and the last thing you want to do is be a hero to anyone's problems. Don't do it. By all means.......do NOT touch a bell in any bar unless you plan on buying everyone in the bar a drink. Pity the fool who does and can't pay for it. Hide 1000 bhat somewhere on your person for emergencies ONLY. The need to get yourself out of a sticky situation can happen. Get a business card from your hotel and keep it with your emergency money. Lost or stolen wallets happen. Prepare for the un expected.

    On bank cards and ATMs you are correct. I would add a few things though. Many charge a percentage extra for card purchases. I have had malfunctioning ATMs that swallow the card. No chance you get it back. So bring a "disposable" one for ATMs. At least don't have just one! (Good tip in case you bring it out while drinking too. Keep smaller amount on it.) Be aware that the sequence of the ATM transaction may be different from your country. It's easy to forget the card if it works in the opposite order from what you are used to. If you have a Thai account and ATM card, the function they have that sends you an sms at every transaction i super! You have an updated statement in your phone and if there is an unauthorized change you can cancel the card after the first transaction and then report the fraud and reclaim your money.

    • @raydawson2767
      @raydawson2767 3 роки тому +1

      The one thing about using atm machines in Thailand is that you get charged an exchange rate fee every time you use it or your debit card in a shopping mall, so it is advisable to just withdraw a larger sum of cash at a time and keep it in your safe.

    • @mikaelcronholm
      @mikaelcronholm 3 роки тому +1

    Don't ever tell the truth, in Thailand.
    They don't (and there's many reasons they don't).
    If you are married, tell them you're single. If you're single, tell them you're married. The former gets you more "special" attention as a potential husband. The latter stops them going into overdrive to snare you (and they are very skilled at that. If you're already married, it won't work).
    If it's your first day, tell them you've been there a month (or you'll get fleeced like a Newbie, as you ARE a "Newbie")..
    If tomorrow is your last day, tell them you're there for another month (or they will take you for every penny, that day and night, by fair means or foul as they have no investment in you and you'll be gone soon, anyway).

Or does it not even matter because once tourism returns all the locations will either be the old bars that were there or the location will be bought up by a new owner and a new bar will pop up. I guess my real question is: do you think when tourism opens up will places like buakhao and soi 6 be empty of bars?

      I went for a month before covid. The girls are much more strict about condoms and I was told by one girl that two girls in the bar I got her from were HIV positive. It's not as friendly as Thailand and young men will try to talk to you and in an instant can turn against you. So completely ignore them. The foreigners are a much lower class than Thailand (you think that's not possible right?) So be aware. The girls are really nice if you are. More than a few had puckered assholes from too hard an ass session. And they can get angry if any problems occur. Their eyes change to death. Also if it's slow woman can get quite aggressive. It's $20 US for short time. And many guys take several throughout the day from the same bar. It's much more of a one stop f**K stop. Also always agree on price for taxi or tuk tuk before and it's $1 or ask after the ride and it's $30. It's safe within the tourist zone. But there are many scams. Men will try to talk to you and invite you for lunch with their "families". So my advice is this. Ignore everyone and just keep walking like you didn't see them. Even kids. They're all organised gangs. Don't even say hello or you can't get rid of them. Only talk to the girls. Don't mess with them. Always pay. Don't talk to strangers. It's a card scam or other scam. The girls are really nice if you pay and they will do whatever sick crap if that's your thing. Be aware. Be careful. And act as if you've been in Asia for a long time. Don't smile or look friendly or not friendly (be neutral) at anyone you're not directly dealing with. You can have a girlfriend for the days you pay her to be and she will act like one. Or short time. Don't get friendly with other foreigners. Most are good for a chat and laugh at the pub but there are some that are criminals on the run. It's different. But it's much more seedy. Remember where you are at all times. Even the kids are part of the gangs. Organised crime run the whole thing.

    Good one Daz. Here is some additional ones u missed.
    1. Don't wear gold jewelery or any type rather. If you have gold necklace or bracelets leave them at home. Don't wear them on the streets in Pattaya. Too many jealous people and if a group of 3 come up to you wanting it, what r u going to do?.
    2. No e cigs or vapors. Vapors are also illegal in Thailand.
    3. Always establish the price on motorbike taxis prior to embarking on a trip. This eliminates arguments about fares. You know what it's worth. When you hear a rip off price, you'll know to avoid the scam artists.

They key to motorbike riding in Thailand is to be sensible and conservative. That's a radical concept for most motorbike riders....

    I can easily see sunscreen being an environmental problem for the coral around Koh Lipe. Dive tours bring hundreds of people a day all day long out to the corals. It is obviously not a problem at Pattaya beach. Not much coral. Not much swimming. I think there is good value in a prominent public relations campaign about the issue. I am of an age when I would never sunbathe. The Thai sun is much too intense anyway. I do have a bald spot that needs hat protection.

      There are 147 National Parks in Thailand, many of them like eg Ko Phi Phi are entire islands including all the beaches of course, and all of the National Parks are huge tourist attractions, so it IS a problem for tourists IMO.

    Regular sunscreen does damage the coral reefs and other plant life. There are brands which are safe, though, and allowed in other countries. Thailand is following a trend here and not just doing its own thing. Except that they aren’t providing for safe sunscreens.
