Dude, honestly, I am a student who has only recently started to get into the gaming industry, and your content is an amazing help to giving me a better view into how the industry works. Ty king
really great and underrated tutorial, i see alot of people complaining about it more of being a timelapse but as an artist it's important to visualize and know how hard edge forms, etc should be made, great job with the video!
You know how you occasionally stumble on a video that makes you realize how fortunate we are that this is free? Yeah. This video is incredible. Not only learned how to use this program better, but I learned some subtle things in painting techniques too.
This is such an excellent video! I followed your advice for my recent practice project (also of a sword, but very different design), and just landed my first full-time job as an artist! You a G 😎
This is a fantastic tutorial mate!! Probably one of the best I've seen on handpainted textures in 3D Coat. thank you for taking the time to share your process; much appreciated!!
Hey @hartgameart this was an awesome video man! Thank you for being so clear on this, hand painting is super hard. Games like No Rest For The Wicked have been reinspiring the style. Are you working on games yourself?
As someone who easily gets overwhelmed by the usual info dump in tutorials, the silent moments between your tips/explanations really helped give me time to take in and solidify the process in my head lol. Not sure if that was intentional, but its definitely appreciated!
That's awesome! Glad you found it helpful. I know some people like fast condensed tutorials while others like them to be more thorough. I've been expirmenting with both on this channel so feedback is always appreciated!
The texture looks stunning! You nailed the hand painted look :) Would love to see more hand painted videos and workflows for that style. Loving your channel so far It's really packed with some great knowledge! Appreciate the videos keep it up man👌
Thank you for the kind words! I definitely want to do more hand painted videos. Maybe exploring different styles and material types. Hand painting doesn’t get enough love!
You know, I've been looking for a quality hand-painting tutorial and this hits right at the sweet spot. THANK YOU!!! Can't wait to test it on my sword model. :) Oh, and please, if you find the time and inspiration and create a tutorial on hand-painting stylized character would be even greater.
Great video! I couldn't find a good video showing the painting process in 3D Coat and this was exactly what I was looking for! Can't wait to check out your ZBrush Videos :)
love coat. it does amazing pbr painting as well. so 2 for 1 there. also its vox sculpting is the best of its kind on market. also its uv and retopo is easy compared to other methods to use. and heres a pro tip if your vox sculpting some of the edges get smoother when you convert to surface mode so dont stress that so much when your voxing out. thanks for making this i want more paint room tuts. that area needs more tuts.
That’s awesome. I’ve started using it for retopo recently instead of topogun and i’ve been loving it. I haven’t ever actually tried the sculpting but I should!
I love how you work in 3Dcoat, its so buttery smooth almost relaxing to watch. I wish Substance Painter is good at handling strokes and pressure. It just doesn't feel right.
I appreciate the kind words! I agree unfortunately about painter. It's improved a lot in the past couple years but it's not quite there for replacing 3dcoat for hand painting
I still hand paint on my textures. Something seems off if I haven't hand painted something, doesn't have to be the entire texture, but it needs to be touched by my hand.
Amazing, I am in college and i have to use photoshop to paint a sword on the same WoW style, i actually tried blending the way you do. My issue is that in photoshop when I use color dip, it changes the other color instead of the one im using so i tend to forget to switch to the new one and i have to undo lol.
I loved this video all the way through! Narration was nice and simple, loved watching the process! Made me consider even getting this program! The only thing that was jarring for my eyes was the masking portion. But that's not your fault, I wonder if it's a way to change how masking looks in the program? Otherwise that can be a deal breaker for me.
Awesome video man! Been using 3dcoat for an year but haven't got to stylized painting so yeah think I'll finally try it! Quick question tho do you how to color pick while painting? Is there a hot key for it?
Hey Omar! I believe the default key is V and that will sample the color of whatever your brush is hovering over. You can also customize it in the settings as well
Did you also work with the projection option? I like to use my photoshop brushes and rarely draw inside 3DCoat, you think this might the wrong way of doing things?
Absolutely! That's a great way to work IMO. Sometimes you cant quite get the angle you want in 3dcoat or you have brushes or even just prefer to work in photoshop. Maybe I will try to incorporate that into a future video!
@@hartgameart Awesome! May I ask you one more thing? I often times notice that, once you use projection, that the resolution in 3dcoat after updating is very low.. even though I set the projection scale to 300 percent... you may know what this causes?
Ehi hart i'm following your tutorial it's amazing! i'm painting the sword now, i would like to share my final result with you if possible end get any tips from you!
Не надо воспринимать мои комментарии как умничество. Просто мне так легче структурировать свои мысли. Кроме того активности больше значит помогаю. Таким образом вы можете в полете контролировать степень смешения и прочее такое.
For handpainted stuff I actually just set the material to "unlit" so lighting doesn't affect it at all. You can find this under the diffusion tab on thee material and switching in from lambertian to unlit
If you don't mind me asking, is 3Dcoat an industry-standard app for handpainting? I noticed some blizzard artists mentioning using it, but I don't know if it's a personal preference of an artist or if that's what they also use in professional environment. Thank you You've answered it in the intro... Sorry! Commented before watching the video.
Lol no worries Allie! It is the industry standard and the main tool used to paint textures on WoW! Programs like painter are getting better for hand painting but nothing beats how responsive painting is in 3dcoat
How come when you first start painting with one color it looks so smooth, but when I'm trying to do it my brush is very sharp and when trying to paint over same stroke I get visible ugly edge :/ Does depth do anything? Why is it so high?
When focusing on handpainting the actual feeling of painting is still superior in 3dCoat. The brush engine in Painter is catching up but I think most will agree the feeling of hand painting is just better still in 3dcoat.
46:14 This mask effect would honestly be so tiring to work with. Just looking at this video for a couple of seconds I got dizzy lmao. Is there a way to disable it?
I think in newer versions they might of gotten rid of it because now that you mention it I was using it this week and it didn’t have that effect. So either they changed it or there is a way to disable it
Hmm it's hard to know exactly what's going on but maybe it's your brush alpha. Try going to windows>panels>brushes and choosing a different alpha It could also be your stroke. there is a little stroke icon just above the top left color palette. One of them is just a solid no pressure stroke. It's possible you might of toggled to it
Dude for the love of god have mercy on my troubled soul and turn off the depth when you paint so you'll get rid of that lengthening red circle around your cursor ( just click the purple circle right next to the green circle on the top bar as you start painting ). BTW take my sub you talented bastard :)
Couple things come to mind. I find polypainting great for albedo style textures where I don't need a lot of precision but but when I really want something painterly I find I'm fighting with polypaint. The other major issue is polypaint requires even distribution of polygons for a uniform texture and in the case of handpainting you're often working on highly optimized assets. Of course you could subdivide it but I think at the end of the day zbrush is a bit too clunky for handpainting.
That's fair. I'll be more mindful of pointing out hotkeys in the future. There isn't anything too fancy going on here. Mainly just using "V" to sample the color my cursor is over. You can also mouse over any tool in 3dcoat and a tooltip will let you know the hotkey!
@@hartgameart im really new to 3d coat, im trying to get better at hand paintin, but its kinda hard since mostly of the "tutorials" only shows timelapses, if there any tutorials you can recommend about the brushes, like the ones used for stylized painting would b really helpful, also its settings
This is a gem of a tutorial
It's absolutely criminal this doesn't have more views, absolutely great introduction to hand painting, thank you!
Thanks Hellberg! awesome name lol
The more nonsensical/crazy/useless content catches their eye and especially their neuron.
it's not especially since he skip a large refine process between 13:53 - 13:57 as he pretends to paint it live
