  • My name is Jeni Hansen Gard I am a ceramic artist and educator. This video was made as part of my thesis project at the University of Florida 2012. I have created a ceramic website that includes instructional videos among other resources for educators using clay in the classroom. The goal of this video is to help you understand how to apply kiln was to your kiln shelves. You can visit my website at ohhappyclay.org

Thank you, it's just what I needed to see. I am doing my first kiln firing in my brand new kiln and needed to know the exact steps on how to put the wash on. Your video is very thorough and gives details that helps one fully understand why it's needed and how to do it.

calcining or pre-firing the kaolin to cone 06 will greatly decrease cracking and chipping of the dried and fired wash on the shelf

Jenny, you don't explain how we know when it's time to re-coat the shelves. I'm assuming just by looking at them; maybe they start flaking. But, that is the only detail left out. I appreciate your video and plan on checking out your website.

Very well explained! Thank you. Hope you got an A. I saw in another video that it was also a good idea to paint kiln wash 1" from the edge as a reminder to students when loading not to put a piece too close to the edge.

I've heard of people using bentonite in a pinch? Zedd inferior to add with the aluminum hydrate
