I've been a fan of Slipknot especially Paul Gray, Joey Jordison and Sid Wilson. Joey's style is more spontaneous and mind you, he's like 160cm but he is the Superball and a firecracker. Full of energy and giving his 120% on it. All in a small packages. And he is not professionally trained drummer, just straight up speed metal. Play by heart.

Imo the best proof of his power is the song "prosthetics" really showcases his raw power. 2 drum breakdowns in that song. That album came out self titled 1999 and to this day 2021 it still gives me goosebumps.

One thing to appreciate about this video is that Slipknot's Iowa is probably the most popular album to feature blast beats up to that point in time. A lot of today's blasters learned it from Joey.

@@shaunsoto8011 Would it kill you any to actually read what I said? I'll say it again and hopefully you'll fucking read this time: It was the most popular album to feature blast beats, up to that point. I didn't say "first" Yes, Napalm Death etc did it long before, but none of their albums sold in the millions like Iowa did.
If you want to argue the point, go yell your disapproval at Jamey Jasta, lead singer of Hatebreed. He said the same thing just a couple of weeks ago.

With that being said dude review this with mad loving respect he could literally turn anything into a drum set so keep that in mind while you review that video. @impishDCfan85 85 yeah l checked him out not to impressed sound's like any other death metal drummer to me and I'm not one for that sound not enough real art in it for me anyone can pound a drum while someone growls and call it music. Did he ever drum on anything else besides a drum set ? I know Joey could make a massive beat off of any random item you put in front of him and it alway's sounded good that takes real talent and a lot of practice just saying he had many of styles not just bang bang bang bang like death metal bands do . Nothing truly special about just playing a drum set not hating on your favorite drummer's are anything just ain't my thing sounds like cannibal corpse honestly they all sound the same to me. At least slipknot had many different styles and sounds good drummer though I ain't going to lie.

I’m a big fan of the Earthtone calfskin drum heads for my snare. They aren’t ideal for playing outside because they expand and contract with the humidity, but they sound great inside. They used to come as heavy, medium, and light, but it doesn’t look like they do that anymore. On my 5.5 x 14 maple I have a medium on the batter side and just whatever Remo snare side head came with the drum. I have a dirt cheap CB700 aluminum snare that I took my first lessons on about 30 years ago. I have a Kevlar marching snare on the batter side and a Earthtone heavy on the snare side. It sounds like a shotgun blast with every hit. They are very versatile.

My pedal sweet spot is halfway between the bottom of the pedal and 3/4 of the pedal with the way things are set up. If I change spring tension, beater height and distance away from the head, and footboard height, that will obviously change.
I use the pearl demon drive pedals, direct drive, set as long boards with medium-heavy spring tension.

I like middle of the pedal which gives me a balance of speed without sacrificing power. I play heal up/ down, heal toe and occasionally swivel if its really fast stuff but that's my least used technique. My three go to's are heal toe, heal up/down while alternating meaning one foot could be playing heal up while the other down same concept for playing heal up or down with one foot while the other is heal toe and i do that for dynamics. So many variables! Studied Lang hard on these techniques off applying multiple techniques at any given time but it's all about the dynamics for me.

further back on the peddle you are, the shorter the distance you need to move your foot to make the beater hit the drum at the cost of needing more force. and if you get it in your sweet spot, you use smaller muscle groups that are faster than moving your whole leg.

Watching a professional drummer react to Joey brings joy and tears. Just to see someone else experience joey it heals a grieving heart. Thank you

I'm learning how to swivel on the foot pedal and to get it to work you have to be right down on the pedal it's very strange but it works.

I play about halfway/ three queaters up the pedla but I know guys who play like Joey right back. They told me that they start in the normal spot and then once the pedal has the momentum going, they'll slide back so they have less foot board to push down. Only works well for straight pumelling double kick though, not so much for short patterns.

I find that playing further back on the pedal gives you more speed. And playing closer up the pedal towards the bass drum gives you more control. Joey was definitely a talented drummer as he could play far back on the pedal and still have alot of control. Cheers

Another great drummer that has passed away is "The Rev" from Avenged Sevenfold. I would check out some of his drum solos too. He was a very talented guy. RIP to both of these legends.

Unless my eyes were deceiving me, I'm pretty sure those were Pearl Reference drums, in the 'Emerald Fade' finish. Same drums I have!
He makes it sound a whole lot better than I do....lol

Delta Empire is another great one to check out. Check out one of his original drum parts on an Ola Englund song (they have a bunch of Pantera covers together too, so don't mistake those for originals). Good luck finding out who he is though ;)

Have you ever seen or reacted to 66Samus? Your comment about how far Joey's feet are back on the kick pedals made me think of him, he's a complete badass. Check out his drumming on Skyless by Andy Gillion, or maybe some of the stuff he did for Devin Townsend. He has drum cam only videos of this stuff on his channel, so don't watch the "official" videos where you'll get a bunch of non-drum shots.

Been watching for a while, subscribed today. I'm a guitarist and don't own a single drum so I doubt my roll bpm will be going anywhere, but that's ok. ;)

    Hey Andrew,
Enjoy your videos mate. Please could you do a reaction to 2 underrated drummers??? Brian Downey from Thin Lizzy doing Bad Reputation and Peter Kriss of KISS doing Shock Me???
Drumming really stands out on these tracks!! Hails from England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Not really a drum solo, it was during the recordings of the roadrunner united project, it's more a soundcheck than a drum solo. ;)

He also seems to sit lower than usual with his hips a tad bit lower than his knees which I would think gives him more control to achieve that clean sound without breaks

I commented this just before so I say again in hopes you see it, but another great snare sound comes from 311's Chad Sexton, not sure if you are familiar with them but have a listen.
