I remember watching Sugar fight in the Olympics with my Dad. He had a picture of his kid on his boot. He had the best flow then and down the line. He fought some of the best fighters ever. Good point. Like Ali he was intelligent and able to adapt to an opponent who was bigger and more powerful. One other thing Ali and Sugar had in common: they were superlative athletes, constantly underestimated due to their good looks. I recall one old commentator saying about Ray: "Don’t let that pretty face and aw-shucks humility fool you. The man is a killer."
Ray hurt Hearns a few times. Hearns was outboxing using his reach, but Ray came back and overpowered Tommy and hurt him a good, a couple of times. Great fight. Ray earned it not given.
Sugar Ray was simply great. To beat Tommy Hearns in his prime was almost impossible and yet he did. Tremendous heart and mad respect. When Ali said, fighting Joe Frazier was the closes he felt to death, he wasn't lying.

I feel blessed I grew up in the era of boxers like Sugar Ray, Tommy , Roberto, Marvin. Absolute warriors to a man! Defeat wasn’t in their vocabulary. It was a savage, brutal and yet beautiful era of boxing at it’s finest.
Yeah, he really got me on that fight. Lost a bunch of cash betting on hearns. But hearns proved himself in many other ways in his career, jumping weight class and becoming champions of them. But ole' sugar Ray had a surprise for him and delivered it in incredible warrior fashion.
Only one boxer deserved that acclaim, and though he was great, Sugar Ray knew better than to say he was the greatest. Like Babe Ruth did with baseball, Ali in his prime transcended his sport and stood apart from everyone in it.
