10 psi for every 1000 rpm is what I hear all the time, but in my experience I've never had a healthy engine with oil pressure that low. I'm glad to see that he's going with the LS though, he will be much happier with the new swap.
This has been an ongoing conversation for months. I've talked with countless people and a few engine builders and all of them agree that the pressure fluctuations are not normal for how this engine was supposed to built. It's not worth the gamble at this point, just cut my losses and move on.
Unless it's a beater, I wouldn't trust 10 psi even though the "specs" say it's okay. From my experience with *several* SBC engines and two LS swaps I've never seen a *healthy* engine with oil pressure that low.
Have watched your complete series on the S10...I have a 1991 S10 extended cab that'll I'll be taking a lot of your content and duplicating. Thanks for the videos! Also have had 3 Monte Carlo's. Looking forward to your content on the MC.
Pressure doesn't equal volume. Put a high pressure, high volume pump in it and plug the oil bypass in the adapter. You'll have all the oil You'll need! 2psi/cylinder/1,000 rpm is a good rule
I don't want to even fool with it anymore at this point, I don't trust it. The engine has an issue that'll continue to get worse no matter what oil pump is in it. It needs to be gone through again. I appreciate the tip for the future, thanks!
I just bought a 1989 gmc s15 sierra classic 2wd 2 door extended cab with the 4.3 and I was looking at 350 swapping it or ls swapping like you did but a 4.8 turbo instead of a 5.3
When things don't go as you plan. Luckily, you did say you might disassemble the engine. Since the bearing material is softer than the cam, the cam itself shouldn't have deep grooves. Checking the all around conditions of the internal parts to see if there's any scuffing on the metal surfaces should reveal a solid rebuildable core. Cam bearing change, at the least, and you could sell the long block, be it to a machine shop or a third party. One must try to recoup some money that has been invested in an engine build. Good luck on your business and all your other projects. Hope to see more of the 240SX.
Too bad about the engine. Like the idea of doing the LS swap. It will be nice for you to get some projects completed. I imagine it’s frustrating juggling them and not being able to complete them. I know I can’t wait to see how the S10 and Chevelle come out.
Yes sir, it's been stressful to say the least. I can't stand seeing so many things in limbo, but the S10 will thankfully be done soon and the Chevelle metal work should kick off within the month. I knew from the get-go that the Chevelle would be a long term project, but I'm happy with the progress so far! Excited for the Monte Carlo. The LS model is also a bucket list car of mine. I’m from Australia so unfortunately we never got them over here. Hoping to import one at the end of the year.
Lesson learned.. but look at the long run..its gonna be better and wellllll.. those tires are gonna be smoked for sure next time. Thanks for sharing..stay safe and be well.
Where are you pulling that reading from? Down by the filter or at the top of the block by the distributor? If they pushed the cam plug too deep it can cause oiling issues to the cam and mains especially if you're running a cam button and didn't check cam thrust.
10 psi per 1000 rpm is the standard go-by, so as long as it’s not dropping below 10 at idle, sounds like it’s fine. Just be sure to deactivate the MDS on the 5.3 or you’ll have another oil issue later with worn cam phasers.
That significant drop in pressure does not sit right with me, especially being that it's a "rebuilt" engine. It's basically running at minimum "acceptable" oil pressure. I don't trust the work that was done to the engine because I have no record of it. I forgot to mention that I've noticed metal in the oil pan before 😔 The 5.3 is an early truck motor so no MDS, but great tip nonetheless. Thanks bud 👍
you should restore a classic ford and classic dodge at some point, I think you should film an indept tour on that 86 chevy c10 even though you're not going to restore it, if you still have it.
Oil pumps are generally driven off a crankshaft via a chain or direct driven gear. Everything is connected on an engine. Bad cam bearings are probably an indirect contributor to the issue.
Like what? Hed to read that reply a few time. Everything in that statement is false when it come to a sbc, oil pump is driven off distributor, that is driven by cam shaft. Now to answer the original question, the cam bearings were not replaced during "rebuild" they have to much clearance, specially when warm, they are not holding oil in oiling system, which directly causes low oil pressure

The GM spec for hot oil pressure at idle can be as low as 7 psi.

Kyle, fyi, before you throw it away, most manufacturers specs for hot oil pressure is 10 psi per 1000rpm, so 10-12 psi at hot idle is normal
Yep, the GM spec is 7psi hot idle
