The twitter message that started it all.... twitter.com/FredMinnick/status/1256304372096610304
I bought a willet pots Still, poured it down the drain and the bottle is an excellent candle holder.
I've tried 4 different barrel picks from Wilderness Trail and all have been great. My last bottles of henry McKenna BIB and Blantons have been disappointing. But that's the risk of single barrel products. Great reviews and content Fred!!
Good topic for a video-- everybody has their preferences and the whiskey they just wouldn't buy again. The variety available is a blessing to us all-- lots to try and a chance to find our personal favorite.
Henry mckenna 10 is my favorite general drinker. I dont really like willet pot still tho.
I love all my children. I brag on some more than others as they do a bit more to excel in life; but, I have never met a bourbon I hated. I love them all in their own way.
Old Forester 1920 is my absolute favorite. I guess I'm a bourbon beginner, but I'm expanding my collection and taste buds daily. Yamazaki got me started at $125. I tasted some a friend let me try and it was awesome so I then bought my own bottle. Unfortunately the first lesson I learned was that small batch whiskeys taste different per batch. But anyway as I moved on to new varieties (to me) I picked up the 115 proof Forester and haven't found anything I like better yet. My budget is low and seemingly disappointed with a $125 bottle, I'm just happier than I could ever be with the $65 Forester 1920.
Have you had any of the current OF 1920, bottled in 2024?
Many who have been drinking OF 1920 since 2019, have noticed a substantial decline in quality.
Got my 1st bottle this year, so have no older ones to compare it to. Only can compare to the OF 100P bourbon & Rye & the 1920 is not much better, if any. It just seems like the bourbon, but 15 proof higher.
@@motohead077 Almost all whiskey has quality control issues. I find bottles vary greatly from batch to batch so pretty much everything is hit or miss. Funny thing about Old Forester 1920 and Jack Daniel's SBBP is that as my palate has matured, I became rather sensitive to the flavor profile of charcoal mellowing. Not like it's bad, just that I have found other brands that I simply like better.
@@motohead077 And I forgot to say that yes the last couple bottles of OF 1920 were clearly different and not as tasty as bottles from years past
@@UltrahotPeppers Ok, thanks for info & response!
What I & many think, in situations like this, is that OF intentional is putting in lower quality whiskey, not that they have a quality control problem.
This is easier for them to do without an age statement, but still can be done with an age statement, like for Knob Creek 9yr.
They start of with a good product, to get a solid customer base. Then a time comes when they have to increase the price or lower quality to reduce expenditures on the product. This happens in just about every industry, especially if it's made in the USA.
If they wanted to, they can make the whiskey taste the same over decades.
For proof of that, look at JD Black label, which is owned by Brown Forman, who owns OF. That is probably the most consistent (same taste over 40+ yrs) whiskey in the history of the world.
Also, Evan Williams BiB has been very consistent over the years.
...that's why we have so many options to choose from. Cheers.
So I have revisited Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof: neat, rocks and back but just don't love it. On the other hand I just bought a bottle of Bulleit BS cause you thought it was tasty. Yes it is and it's now front and center on my top shelf. Thank you sir.
That's wild that people disliked Weller. I'll pay anyone to ship me some it's so hard to find here
There is always hate for highly rated bourbon (or anything for that matter). Someone hears the reviews, chases the allocated unicorn, pays way too much, expecting their life to change drinking this elixir of the gods....ahhh the let down when rainbows don’t pour from the bottle into pools of gold. And for all the Blanton’s haters, you can send me whatever you have on hand after Fred gets his EC18’s 😉
Great comment!!!!
Yeah, think some people hate some decent tasting whiskey because of the huge disappointment when they finally find it & find out they already have 5 bottles that are better, available & cost $60 or less.
Oh, I'll trade you some Blanton's for ECBP C932 or KC SiB 12yr+ or RR SiB picks.
Great question sir! shows how subjective it all is.
For me, i found Town Branch reallllly disappointing. I think it tasted very young..like no aging whatsover...and had a flavor profile that aligned moreso with cheap scotch. One of only bourbons ive ever poured out.
I agree, didn’t care for it at all. Tasted like nail polish to em
Hi fred. Thanks for the great content as always. I used to hate, buffalo trace. I can’t explain myself. Wouldn’t take it if you gave it to me. Today I keep many of the 1.75 around of buffalo so I’ll never be without. It’s fair to say we change.
Just depends on what type of bourbon drinker you are. Some people palate are not prepared for cask strength, or a wheated bourbon like you said opinions are going to be different so many distillers do different things as far as stage charr, years on aging, what floor barrel is on, its just a lot. I'm a big bourbon so all the ones that were named i really like half of those bottles I have.
I'm still struggling to get through my bottle of Henry McKenna 10. I'm drinking it to clear space on my bar, but I just side-by-sided it with Elijah Craig small batch, and I preferred the EC. Maybe my barrel is just meh, but I have not been impressed. I have an unopened Henry McKenna 6 year Sour Mash bourbon from the late 60's with the gold painted lettering. Some day I'll probably open it (I don't have anything better to do with it) and I'm expecting I'll like it better.
Is the vodka sucks barrel top available for sale?
I agree with you Fred on the EC 18. I just bought one and I like it a great deal.
Great advice - give the bottles you don't like to friends. Win, win.
That doesn't always work, for instance Old Bakers 7. I think I have found a soloution, it should clean automotive parts fairly well.
"anything from Diageo" LOL
The Store pick of Blue Note.Just great
“There is no such thing as bad whiskey. Some whiskeys just happen to be better than others.”
Truth
There's good whiskey and sewer water labeled as bourbon.
Had I been one to check my Twitter on a regular basis idve said Rowans Creek, Maker's Mark 46, and VOB 90.
I wonder if Town Branch has ever had a repeat customer. 🤔
Who doesn’t like melted plastic?
Fred found Whiskey: Booker's Oven Buster Small Batch 2015-04 Straight Bourbon which i think u were involved on for the release. Will give it a shot
I'm never disappointed with the quality and price of: ET BIB, Coopers Craft 100, BT at $29, Knob Creek and EW 50% BIB and 50% 1783 and any Old Forester. 100 is such a great sip at $24. The high price I try at the bar. That said I would spend for Antique 107 and EH Taylor.
Blade & Bow is delicious. Very good !
I wonder if region has anything to do with it. Down south it’s so hard to even find eagles rare, but up north it’s everywhere. Unfortunately we can’t have alcohol shipped to us where I am.
I guess I will finally get a chance to “hate”weller twelve yr!Finally .Thanks for your palate and good sense Fred.Of course your service.
I had plenty of time to finally try some of the oddballs in my collections and unfortunately I had to pour two of them out. They were just that bad. Joseph Magnus (Not Cigar Malt). And Breckinridge PX Sherry Cask. Those two will never grace my bar again.
I just got a ten year 90 proof russels reserve that taste like watered down wood and no caramel or vanilla or any wild turkey notes I’m used to. Must have got a weird batch bc it’s my first bottle and I love most things turkey
i also got a bottle and was not impressed. not like my 101
I dislike most things turkey. Not a popular opinion, I know
Exactly to each their own. The best bourbon is the one you enjoy. Cheers
I can’t believe people hate Old Forester 1910, but you’re right-it’s all subjective.
I think/hope most of these comments were based on demand.(example) I can see someone saying weller 12 is worth 50 but not secondary 150 (which is pretty much the only place you can find it in most states). That was at the top of my hunting list last year and had the oppertunity to buy it in a lottery but went with old fitz 13. Glad I did. Later had it vs 107, SR and FP. Took one sip of 12 yr then 1 sip of FP and drank on the FP the rest of the night. Would also take 107 over it because I appriciate proof over age but thats just me. Weller 12 became popular because of the age, brand, and attachment to pappy. Now all you read and hear is pappy is over rated also... To each their own. Enjoy wisk(e)y the way you love it and be happy! Cheers!
Many will fall over at this, but my least favorite has been Four Roses SiB. I have bought a tried a couple and didn’t like any of them. Don’t like flowers in my whiskey. That stuff is relegated to toddy duty through winters… with extra lemon.
First!...Fred, love your reviews!
I didn't like Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. I know most people do. I have tried it 4-5 times, but just does not appeal to me. Love Henry McKenna and Russell's Reserve. Lukewarm on Buffalo Trace. It was a good $24 bourbon, but has been hyped up way too much.
Is there a recurring theme? Similar mashbill?
I have a Castle and Key batch #1 I haven't opened because I heard it's so so.
McKenna 10 year is great with a spicy cigar. I will say it’s not a regular drinker for me.
I completely agree with Willet Pot Still, Widow Jane and Peerless Rye, but mixing either one with the Peerless makes them drinkable.
Saw many whiskeytube reviews where Baby hudson & willet pot still where completely Undrinkable. they had to spit it out.
@@motohead077 Rumor is that the Willet Pot Still Mash bill has changed and I actually like what I've had recently. Won't be buying a bottle though.
Wilderness Trail BIB is fantastic! Are we sure these are whiskey enthusiasts and not whiskey trolls?
To each his own:) my McKenna 10 was not good at first pour, month later not too bad, couple months later very good! I’m also not fond of WT 101 & WT Kentucky Spirit but love all the Russell’s, Rare Breeds, and many others they make. Once again to each his own:) if I don’t care for something I give it away or trade with friends!
Is it that they hate the bourbon or hate it for the price? I like Russel's Reserve, but the local store sells it at a premium (my opinion) of $59.99.
HM 10 can stay under rated so I can snag more. Got 3 last week!
I do not like Weller Special Reserve at all. I love the 12 year, but there's just something about the WSR I don't like. I don't get the hype around it.
Good video
Weller 12 won in a blind for me of pappy 10, weller 107, EHT SB and ETL.
I agree that McKenna is great in the 30-40 price range but not worth what they charge now ( my standby store upped it to 99) why pay more for Weller' s pretty bottle when BT is better. Had to throw away a bottle of Rough Rider! The Hudson products are good but I agree they are a bit pricey (true of a lot of NYS brown water) love me OF 1920 but Sratesman rocks if you can still find it, though I'm leaning more to 4R SBS
I've only had 2 bottles of Whiskey that were tough to finish, and one of those was a flavored whisky, Crown Royal Mesquite BBQ (lesson learned). The other one? Hudson Four Grain Bourbon. It was my 1st time trying Hudson and my 1st time trying anything with all four grains. I don't know if it's Hudson's fault or if it is because of Four Grains. But either way, I haven't tried a 2nd version of either one.
Willets has a pretty bottle.
Pot still is typically the only bourbon I like on the rocks. There's something about one or two small ice cubes that bring out this buttered popcorn kind of note I think is the best I can describe it in the will it pot still. It's by all means not my favorite bourbon nor one that I buy all that frequently but the bottle is pretty and makes for a good conversation piece and it's a nice change of pace every now and again. I definitely don't hate it but I Also don't have to have it either.
Put it in a cheap bottle, see if people like it better or vice versa for a cheaper bourbon. Willett pot still and noah's mill are two of my favorite whiskies and the bottles have nothing to do with it.
I see Basil here for $42us and it is low proof pass...I can get a liter of Jim Beam 12 year signature for $38 in the same store.
I can only find 4 roses 80 proof and don't want to waste my time...
I like the taste of Buffalo Trace but it is $13.50 more per liter than Wild Turkey 101..which I love....
I put the buffalo trace away for guests...
McKenna 10yr???? What's wrong with people McKenna 10yr is absolutely fantastic same with Russell Reserve
You should have tried the bottle I bought..... Tart bitter green wood! It was horrible! I gave it to my friends and they spit it out! I f-ing dumped that dog sh@* !!!!
Neither impressed me, didn’t hate either of them but for a 10 yr I expected more flavor
I got to sample McKenna 10yr at Heaven Hill recently and thought it was pretty good. I thought about trying to hunt down a bottle of it, but the consensus I was hearing on forums was that it was really inconsistent from barrel to barrel. Granted, you'll always have variation with any single barrel product, but the divide between really good and really bad that I was hearing around McKenna seemed more extreme than most other single barrel labels. It feels like too much of a gamble to me to spend the amount that retailers are asking and -hope- that I got one of the good barrels.
MCKENNA BLOWS DUDE. your palette is f'd
Drinking it now !!
I thought you had a neck tattoo for a solid 15 seconds lol.
I have to wonder if some palates need a little check... loved Henry, Wilderness Trail, Widow Jane, Russell's...
who are these people?
nobody hates Russells, wtf
Henry McKenna is the only great 10 yr Single Barrel Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon out in the market today. For years it was the people's favorite Bourbon. However, when its price went up from $40 to $60 MF'ers began hating on the product! In my opinion, bourbons are perfectly aged from 7 to 10 years max. McKenna is my top-shelf BIB. I like everything single, unaltered, undisturbed, not blended, or altered. As a result, McKenna is the BEST 10 yr BIB BOURBON on the market today.
Bourbon enthusiasts probably hate Willett Pot Still Reserve because it tastes more like a good spicy rye than a bourbon,...I generally prefer rye and Willett Pot Still is my favorite bourbon,.... Smoke Wagon is awesome too.
I don’t know anyone that doesn’t like Henry McKenna!!?
I was greatly disappointed with Wilderness Trails.
Value and taste keeps me going back to Evan Williams black label.
People probably it because a lot of the good juice is hard to find.
After watching several reviews on basil hayden i picked up a bottle. I wanted so bad to like it, but it just doesn't do it for me
Completely Agree. And I keep meaning to circle back to it, give it one more try, but I just can't seem to do it.
The pepper was too much for me.
Watery
Send me all the Weller 12 you don’t want
Anyone who trashes 1792 and Dickel BiB (latest release) needs to have their palette re-tuned.
Rock Town and George Dickel barrel select. 💩
Willett pot still is one of the most disappointing bottles I have purchased. Personal taste I suppose.
Good. Hate all the Basil Hayden’s you want. More for me.
Basil Hayden is just Old Grand Dad with less flavor...
kirby culp agree. That age statement doesn’t make it worth it for me
1792 is excellent bourbon and is not expensive.
Anyone who claims McKenna 10 BIB is crap is full of it. You may get a subpar one once in a while due to barrels, but I’d put it up against any other high rye bourbon in the sub $50 range. That’s right, sub $50. I bought my most recent bottle at $44. It’s a fantastic bourbon with a rye kick. The older bottlings from the 1980s and 1990s are great. Just do your Kentucky chew and take your time with it and it will open up. Nuff said…
I just opened Henry McKenna 10 year it blew me away how good it is. The taters who can't find these bottles need to stop.
weller 12 is GREAT but not worth the money. I hated Benchmark 8 more than any of the 20 bourbons I have bought. I was not a fan of Four Roses, but did not hate it. but my FAVORITE (so far) is the Blue Note Uncut (baarrel 15046) that I liked so much I bought 4 bottles. I would have bought more but I love my wife and she thought I was nuts getting 4.
I like most of what you listed, except Cleveland, Cleveland Bourbon is a disgrace to bourbon! Cheers Fred!
Weller 12 year is "Highly Allocated" due to Buffalo Trace sending most of their products to Japan. It is a falsely created supply to the current Demand, which is nutz. Just because it's Buffalo Trace, people think it's comparable to Pappy. Pappy isn't comparable to the demand for Pappy. Buffalo Trace and their whole allotment game, is tiring. Way better offerings out there for your money, and without the game playing.
I mean im aware of that but im still gonna buy eagle rare when i see it. Couldnt care less about weller or pappy tho.
Eagle Rare is a great example of the manipulated supply and demand situation. Eagle Rare is a 10YO and most people enjoy it but because it is plentiful in many spots, there’s no hype about allocation and therefore marked up prices.
@@Oooooo-xi2mx Good.....because I like Eagle Rare, even better then Blantons. Used to be able to get Elmer T Lee everywhere also. Then they allocated it. I have 2 bottles in my basement that I paid $30 each for. scared to open them because I don't want to replace them at $80 or more now.
The Willet haters are just upset they have to pay to get that lovely bottle.
I won't say I hat Henry McKenna, but it didn't "wow" me.
W.O.W.
Bought blantons twice. Not my cup of tea. Horrible on my pallet. Yet others fall over themselves for that swamp water
Each to their own peeps
wheres freds follower count?
I'll tell you what I hate, anything that isn't spirits direct from Total Wine & More
Why do people hate Basil Hayden's?
I would like it much better at 45% abv, or more. Until then, I can almost always find something else that I would rather be drinking.
Wait, uh what?! There are people who hate RR Sib? I'm guessing that you can find those folks slamming vodka tonics and white claws
Right!? But go to the twitter, Turkey had a ton of hate. Shocking to me. Must be the funk.
@@FredMinnick bring the funky spice in all.of its glory, all of the time. You already know this, so I'm preaching to the proverbial choir here...but some of those RR SIb picks have literally shown me the heavens. The sky has opened up..there was a wink from the clouds, angels were singing..all of that...I suppose it's a good thing that everyone doesn't feel that way.
@yea bouy honestly if youre worried about sugar you shouldnt be drinking. But some people just like those things anyway and thats fine.
lol..gee, you really got me there. No, I'll judge..vodka sucks, and so does white claw. Good choices on the Buffalo Trace stuff though!
I only hate stuff being sold at silly prices. I do not 'HATE' anything, just do not care for some stuff. There is always someone who likes something.
well said
HM10 is one of my favs...if yall hate it send it to me.
Larceny,Makers Mark Basil Hayden.
I hate both Elijah Craig Barrel proofs A120, C919
Old Forester 1920? OK well if you don't like it can I have what's left?
seems like a good deal to me
I mean... my favorite bourbon is WLW, so if that's someone else's least favorite bourbon... I'm gonna go with, "they don't know what the fuck they're talking about".
Bottom line....you can always find someone that dislikes every bourbon out there. For instance. I cannot stand Knob Creek. Most people would find that crazy. It just tastes like dirt to me. However, it has won a lot of awards. so probably MOST bourbon enthusiasts like it. Also, the McKenna 10-year is pretty meh to me.
Cleveland and Hudson are the worst bourbon’s I’ve tried. However, contrary to opinion I love Widow Jane.
Hudson and Cleveland are crap and the worst bourbons I’ve tried as well. I’ve had two bottles of Widow Jane, really liked the first bottle but disappointed with the second.
Does anyone like St Augustine?
A Very astute point. I cannot say I hate Henry McKenna BIB, it has not lived up to my expectations.
put some of that silk ascot money into a new camera 🤣
I didn't like Pappy.
I must hate all bourbon. Or, all whisky for that matter. I keep buying bottle after bottle of different distillers, different expressions, age statements, no age statements, SiB, SB, CS, American, Canadian, Scotch, Irish and recently Japanese. I went to a Spirits tasting last year and sampled a dozen different whiskies and sat in on a masterclass discussion about aging and flavour profiles and such. I haven’t yet found one whisky I’m going to settle on and have it be “my brand” that I will then only purchase. I must hate them all.
This is how I feel about Scotch. Scotch is trash.
My least favorite bourbon is the baseline Makers. I think it's a good starter bourbon, but it's the Texas Road House of bourbons. Sure Texas Road House cooks a steak, but I'm not crossing a busy street to get one.
I understand the willet, but some of the others.......are these people that only eat chicken nuggets and Kraft Macaroni and cheese?
it's proof all of our tastes are different. LOL.
@@FredMinnick I'm just being sarcastic. I got a book called bourbon curious and thought I'd come here and tell people I'm a bourbon sommelier. I am not being sarcastic about the book, I am enjoying it! So thank you for what you do.
Anyone who doesn't like Henry McKenna 10 is nuts. If you don't like it, please give it to me! I'll agree that Basil Hayden's is absolute trash though.
Interesting survey. I can't stand Old Forester 1920. Tried it twice and the second time I had to pour it down the drain. I tend to not like the high proof stuff so I stay away from barrel proof and cast strength Bourbons. Wild Turkey Rare Breed is also on my do not like list.
Yellowstone 93 proof is the worst bourbon I've ever tasted. I survived for years off of Kentucky tavern at UK, so I feel like that's saying something.
I bought a bottle of Henry McKenna and didn't like it either. Back then it was $25. The last time I saw it in a store they were asking $60 for it and now I like it even less 😃.
Same here. Bought one 3yrs ago and got one shortly after as a gift. By the end of these I was making sub-par Manhattans just to get rid of it.

I have had bottles of Weller SR, Antique 107, and 12 year that I've revisited multiple times and have not been able to like them. Weller in general is very harsh, astringent, and leathery. Not my favorite profile. I even have an Antique 107 NCF store pic I can't finish, the bottle is roughly 2/3rds full. Needless to say, I don't chase Weller anymore
Jeffry747 If you never liked Weller from the start, why were you “chasing” it? That’s the problem with all this bourbon hype. Everyone chases whatever the internet tells them to, even if they have no idea what they are buying. Then those of us who buy what we actually like can’t find it because someone else who doesn’t even like it cleared the shelf so they could look cool on Instagram. I’ve been enjoying the Weller line for over 10 years, when you could get a bottle of 12yr for 23 bucks at any liquor store. Feel free to send your Weller my direction if you don’t like it...
@@mach78fl370 Yeah, that was during my early bourbon hunting days a few years ago when I admittedly jumped on the bandwagon. Many were hyping Weller, calling it "Baby Pappy" or "Poor Man's Pappy", so yeah, I chased it for a bit. I stopped once I came to the conclusion that Weller was not my favorite line of bourbons. Now, when I see Weller on the shelf, I will happily holler out on the internets that I found some.
My local purveyor had Weller Reserve for 49 bucks. Certainly not better than regular BT. Pretty bottle is all.
May should stay with coors light
