  • Tenma Kiriko's Kamaboko carving (U-shape carving) is a process of shaving the glass into a U-shape, which gives the surface of the glass a concave lens shape.
When the surface is polished to a mirror finish, the pattern carved on the bottom of the glass is reflected on the inside of the glass by the refraction of the liquid when a drink is poured, creating a beautiful kaleidoscope-like pattern.

    00:15 Dividing the glass
Basic lines are drawn on the surface of the glass to serve as a guide for cutting. The lines drawn will be the center line for cutting, so a device called an indexer is used to draw accurate lines.
    1:29 Side shaving
A U-shaped diamond wheel attached to the grinder is rotated to grind while applying water. The cut surface is smoothed out by starting with a coarse grit and gradually moving to a very fine grit.
    9:42 Bottom grinding
    12:37 Polishing
A natural abrasive called "polishing sand" is dissolved in water and applied to a disk-shaped wooden board (cork board) while polishing the shaved surface to make it transparent.
    14:16 Buffing
Felt or cloth buffs attached to the grinder are rotated, and cerium oxide dissolved in water is applied to the buffed surface to complete the polishing process.

It looks beautiful, and what a craftsman! But, ¥38,500/$250! I'd be afraid to use that glass, lest I break it.
