    6 months after I quit my Attorney position, a friend asked if I had dyed my hair! I hadn't - I bet he asked because my hair was gray when I was working, but apparently the gray went away a few months after I left! Who would have thought?

      Glad to hear you managed to get out of the rat race & regain some hair coloring! I'm noticing more white hairs, & it further cements my belief that making more money & therefore, being more stressed out, is not worth it.

    All aspiring lawyers should sub and watch your catalogue of livestreams. You answer all the tough questions which no one else days and puts a "real" face on the industry. Thank you!

      Thanks, Tim! I hope more people subscribe to me too, although last year I thought it would be worthwhile if I could only get to 500 subs. :) I appreciate all your support!

    This was so interesting Judy! Really appreciate your full transparency about the down sides of being a lawyer. Sorry to hear that you've dealt with people using you for your services :( I could imagine the jaded-ness that could come from dealing with other people's problems all the time. That also makes sense about lawyers needing to have some sort of a skeptical mindset. Enjoyed this one :)

      I think it happens often to people who are selling intangible consulting services, as well as people who are self-employed. Thanks for watching this, Eunice!

    There are significant health issues. Many attorneys sit in an office all day, and often do not exercise/work out sufficiently.

    • @aalegalfocus
      @aalegalfocus  3 роки тому +3

      True; many of the attorneys I've seen are out of shape and probably not in the best of health.

    #replay That's impressive...full ride to Emory Law.
    Yes, getting older but tied to your desk for so much too. Especially with us staying home these days. The getting up to go to the printer, bathroom, to a colleague's office and all that doesn't happen as often. I can believe about vision getting worse. I read a lot too for my profession and dried eyes is a problem. That eye procedure sounds scary.

    • @aalegalfocus
      @aalegalfocus  3 роки тому +3

      It lasted about 20-30 minutes & wasn't worth the cost. Just remember to take breaks from reading/computer use, close your eyes & blink deliberately throughout the day, & use the more expensive eye drops.

  • @TwinsTry
    @TwinsTry 3 роки тому +2

    Catching this now! I agree with you! I also think a lot of this is applicable to most office / desk jobs!

    • @aalegalfocus
      @aalegalfocus  3 роки тому +2

      Definitely! Being stuck at a desk & computer most of the day is not only a drag but also unhealthy. Hope you're able to enjoy sports & other fun aspects of life along with your career!

    "Damn homie in [law school] you was the man homie, WTF happen to you." 50 cent. I was skinny as hell as a trial attorney. Fast lunches and running up and down the stairs every day. I hope I look better now than I did in 2010. I feel like I do. Lol. Idk

    • @aalegalfocus

      Just keep exercising & eating right. I forgot to mention that lunch was a social event and/or the highlight of my day when I worked for firms. I ended up with cavities from drinking too much sweet tea when I first moved to North Carolina. Another negative effect.

    Give people free legal work & advice, and they know where to go in the future when they want more free work & advice. (And send their friends & relatives!)

    • @aalegalfocus
      @aalegalfocus  3 роки тому +2

      Exactly. It's like what I read in a book about starting a solo law practice-- the author said if you give people free legal advice, it's like giving a dog cheese. Then the dog will keep coming back expecting more cheese from you.

    Seems to me that many of the students who attend the lower tier law schools don't come from upper class backgrounds. Many might be the first lawyer, or even first-gen college grad, in their family. They're just unaware of what they're getting into. Would you agree with that?

    • @aalegalfocus
      @aalegalfocus  3 роки тому +2

      I agree. They are the most vulnerable to predatory law schools & being mired in student loan debt. Word needs to get out that going to just any law school, no matter the cost, is a poor decision.

    How do you tap into your own ethnics group without being taken advantage of ?

    • @aalegalfocus
      @aalegalfocus  3 роки тому +2

      Good question. You could do some targeted ads in ethnic newspapers (I never did) or try to network directly with some leaders of community organizations. They may be more professional and would respect your time. Just get your name out, but don't make yourself open to being a free legal hotline to everyone. Also, have an assistant/secretary or answering service (Ruby Receptionists is one such company, but there should be plenty others) to field your calls and run interference with the tire kickers who don't want to pay you. That way someone else can immediately let people know what the consultation fee is, and it reduces the likelihood that people will keep expecting you to be at their beck and call.
