Set your camera to M manual mode. Set flash to M manual. Start with these settings: 1/4 power, f/5.6, ISO 100, 1/125 of a second. You want the background lighter? Then slow the shutter. Take a few test shots.

Thank you for stopping by! I still use the unit and its been great. Side note, the battery doesnt drain over time when not in use.

I wonder if the deflector change anything compared to a "classic" flash ? Is the light less harsh ?
That will depend on the reflector size and also the material it is made out of.
You can adjust the output setting or add other accessories to soften the light.

Yup. I plugged it in just now. Kept firing just fine.

When putting the flash away, I never felt any hot temps.

Shouldn't the hot shoe work if you don't use the sync cable? You don't need to use the sync cable if you're using it with a hot shoe compatible camera?
It all depends so make sure you test with or without and dont forget to also slide a paper in the hot shoe for troubleshooting.
The hot shoe will trigger the flash on its own. The sync cable is for Cameras without a functioning hotshoe.

No need for that. In the old days, we would often power our flash guns with an external battery pack slung from a shoulder strap, with a power cord running to the flash. The same could be done today with a portable power bank like a Belkin Boost Charge or Duracell Charge10. Depending on the brand and model they can be had for as little as $30, so you could get three or four of them for the price of one spare Godox Senior.
