Illusionist Leon Etienne returns to Penn & Teller: Fool Us! for his second appearance.
Episode 713 Jaws of Death
After successfully fooling Penn & Teller on his previous visit, Leon returns to the hit show with an all new illusion. Fooled them TWICE?
“You’re Penn and Teller, and I think we’re good!” I loved that response. Even though Penn didn’t specify exactly what your assistant did, you showed humility, grace and respect instead of fighting them on it. Hats off to you sir. Awesome trick regardless!
Thank you so much. They are the best and have given me so many opportunities. No need to fight with the best!
Actually, they did.
@@snowflakehunter They didn't. And a lot happened off camera. But thank you for watching and commenting.
It’s amazing that the hair has still not
recovered from the lightning strike!
A fantastic show of nail-biting magic!!!
Haha! That is funny. Yep. Hair still stands at attention. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and watch really appreciate you.
I love when Penn's so excited he laughs like a hyena :)
Yeah! It is a pretty good laugh and its rewarding to get it out of him.
Leon:
"I still haven't figured out misdirection."
Leon's agent:
"It's fine, I'll call Chelsea."
Watch when he passes the little straight jacket to his assistant. You don't see it coz the first one is in his sleeve and she produces a different . Spotted straight away . Watch closely you don't see him pass it directly to her
@@koifish4929 time frame please
Yep she’s gorgeous for sure
@@mercedeswilkins9085 4:05..... when he puts the jacket on and he hides his small jacket under the big jacket and she then produces another small jacket. You don't see the switch
4:05 my friend. Watch when she passes him the jacket . You don't see him pass the small jacket she produces a small jacket from under the big jacket. It's obvious the switch is then. Why would you do that. Pass her the small jacket first then put on the large jacket
If you notice carefully at 4:08 you will find that Chelsea is hot
indeed
4:08 is not relevant.
Astute observation.
@@gmoops8986 HAHA
Chelsea is a babe.
If you look away from Chelsea you’ll notice a magic trick happening.
:-)
Wait. what? there was a magic trick? All I saw was a hot chick
Took me forever to figure that out...
🤣🤣🤣
The secret is at 5:34. Pause here. Use the period key on your keyboard to frame forward and you can see on the assistant loading the card into the the blade contraption on the far right of the screen. It would have been more obvious if they had not cut away to the audience and the blade spinning. She is just finishing up. Her hand is directly over the area where the card appeared. The blade has a "pull" that yanks the card with a thread or she stuck it on a blade there that was hinged to spring out when the blades dropped.
The handoff was earlier when she she held the straight jacket in front of him.
I think this is actually it. It's a hidden blade that opens at the drop.
@@thisiscait I had two theories, one was a card pull using a wire to bring it into the blade from him, and the other was that the assistant set it into a blade that flips out when it was falling. I was pretty confident that it was the second. But. It bothered me so much that you could see the handoff of the mini straightjacket when the assistant blocks it from view. They wouldn't need to do that. He could have handed it to her in the open. So I freeze framed those blades a few times using comma and period to frame forward and back. At 7:04 you can see those blades are solid and don't look like they flip out. So back to the hand off, if he keeps the card he can use a string pull, but the reason I didn't think he did so much is that it would be hard to get the card to puncture the blade. But again, at 7:04, I'm pretty sure that is a fake tip of the blade and the card is not punctured at all. He releases the card and fake tip and the string sends it up to the blade as he is spraying the cards. He tears the card off with two hands to get rid of the tip and to make it look punctured by a blade.
So, I'm going with the pull theory now based on 7:04.
I get the feeling Teller roasts the shit out of Penn when they're alone.
Teller is definitely the top...
...magician I've seen in a while.
Here is my theory. At 4:04 he puts the deck in a pocket in the jacket. She takes a different deck to make it look like its his but it isn't. He forced Penn to take the Fool card originally which has some sort of identifier on it that he can find while in the straight jacket and pull it out. At 4:39 he bends down and I think she opens up the sleeve with a zipper maybe. At 4:51, she reaches on the side we can't see into the sleeve and he pushes the card into her glove. Now she has the card which we can't see and somehow gets it onto that blade when the camera cuts away slightly. What do you think ? Such a great trick - well done! Am I wrong?
Thank you so much for checking this out and commenting. I love your thought process and respectful comments!

7500 miles away, my heart was pounding! Great interaction with Penn, and an awesome performance. This just fuels your fire/passion. You ROCK BROTHER!
Dude!! Thank you so much. Your comments are GREATLY appreciated.
I think the assistant places the card on the spike, but there are two spikes connected on a hinge. The carded spine is hidden behind the side wall of the jaws. So when the jaws close the momentum swings the other spike with the other card into place. And the bare spike is now hiding.
Loved this all. The comedy ("romantic sound", Penn's laugh at the end, etc.) I was completely fooled by this. But I think I've pieced it together somewhat. The cards is passed to the assistant behind the straight jacket I think we've all gathered, but it's still crazy that the card is not in the jaws at 6:43 and it is at 6:44. It has to be a clever engineering feat I think. It's hard to tell because I think the assistant's move maybe happens off camera, but I think she put the card into position when she touches the machine before it's raised up. Then the jaws actually do fall and pierce the card. I'm picturing some kind of holder that snaps into place to prevent it from moving until it's impaled. Very clever set up. This does mean that the jaws would fall and hurt him if something wrong happened and he didn't escape the jacket in time. I'm hoping they'd have some sort of safety stop if that were to happen. I'm guessing 60 seconds is more than enough time for him though. He probably could do it pretty regularly in like 35 seconds if needed and adds in the extra time for safety. Very clever. Very well done!
Thank you for checking this out. Thank you for your comments and thoughts. I'm happy you enjoyed it!
My guess is that when he lets go, it release the plunger up slightly and disengages the safety mechanism. Still no idea on how that card got there though.
@gsdcbill 3:31 and 5:07. Those are different straight jackets for the cards because the zip ties have switched directions. So yeah, he never passes the cards (plural) to her.
@@edwells4769 excellent observation. I also suspected about the existance of 2 decks
at 5:34 we can see the chain has slack on it, meaning that something else is preventing the jaws to close, and the chain might simply open upon tension.
Superb. The danger was palpable. The escape amazing. Your presentation was flawless.

Hands mini straight jacket to Chelsea behind the big straight jacket for a split second. In that short time he hands it zip tie up and a split second later she has it zip tie down. Deck switch #1 when he picks up the mini straight-jacket. Now assistant has the deck with the death card and Leon has a different deck, in which he puts the signed fool card. The rest of the cards in that deck are glued in so that it's easy to just remove the signed Fool card when the time comes.
Switch #2 is when she hands him the full-size straight-jacket. Leon keeps the fool deck in his left hand and the assistant passes him the death card, which she removed from the original deck backstage. He removes the fool card from the rigged deck while she is securing the straps (possibly just before.) At this point he has both cards.
Then he passes the fool card to the assistant while she is securing his left arm. Her right hand is gone behind his body for a couple of seconds. It is supposed to look like she is being rough with him and grabbing his left arm, but she is hiding the fool card in her glove or sleeve.
When the jaws are being displayed, the assistant runs her left hand on the top of the jaws and places the card in secure area, on a spike that is retracted with a spring mechanism. When the jaws clamp shut, the spring mechanism is triggered, showing the spike and impaling the fool card in the process.
Leon reveals the death card that he already had on him, and then points to the fool card on the spike.
Alternate explanation for the death card is that she passes him a whole deck of death cards that she had put in a mini-straight-jacket backstage.
Interesting theory man. Close on a lot and off on a lot. Either way I appreciate you taking the time to watch, comment, and play the game of trying to figure it out. Thank you!

Incredible stuff and having the card on the blade is a super original idea. @@magicrockstv5411 Hi Leon, no problem at all! I spent a number of years studying and performing magic so I have a deeper appreciation for the things not seen in incredible performances.
"That's a very romantic sound" -- and the two kinksters give each other a meaningful look ;)
The detail can be found at the zip-tie (or tie-wrap as we call it where I live). The tie has a "direction" of locking. And he was not careful enough to keep it the same. Check the orientation of the "knot" right after Pen is handing it to him...then check it again when Chelsie is trying to place it on the stand...it's in the opposite way. The original was kept somewhere in the straight jacket.
Still, I'm not a magician, I'm impressed by the whole setup and show and the magic involved! It's quite intimidating and physically engaging and...the assistance is g o r g e o u s !

There was another dangerous act, also a sword-through-the-card act, where Penn commended the magician for taking out the "smart one", ie. Teller, while the magic was happening. He didn't fool them anyway, but it was a more simple act. Maybe this would have had a different outcome if you had put Teller on stage!
Loved it! As they say, there are many variations on this, but there was enough there to be genuinely entertaining and mystifying. Certainly fooled me (and I know the explanation for the previous act I was talking about).

That’s part of what makes this show stand out from all of the other talent based shows - no one loses, everyone gets to perform in front of a massive theater to huge applause, and for two giants of magic.
That experience is a win already, fooling them is just a bonus
@@stefanandrews5098 Yes! Plus take into account what Val Valentino did back around 20 years ago with his "magic's biggest secrets finally revealed". His lame excuse for giving away all the secrets was to get magicians to come up with new and better tricks.
Penn & Teller devised a much better way. They KNOW that they are two of the best in the world and by challenging the world to fool them, other great magicians have become inspired to create tricks that are difficult for Penn & Teller to figure out and/or gives magicians a reason to devise new methods in performing tricks that, despite their experience and research (which spans almost a century) leaves Penn & Teller completely baffled. Penn & Teller did it in a way that was entertaining. They did it in the most clever and elegant method that could be devised. They did, and are still doing it in the BEST way ever achieved. Noone can beat these guys....unless they fool them.
As I viewer I never even care of Penn and Teller were fooled or not, because we already got to see the act!
