I bought this knife…live about a mile from Benchmade in Oregon City…so I have others of theirs as well. Most everyone loves the knife. Lots to love. Most everyone bitches about the sheath. It has lousy retention. So…go to Home Depot, etc. and get a few of those sticky pads used on chair legs. Put one that is flexible inside…in the forward bend of the sheath, about 3” down. All of a sudden the knife fits and is retained perfectly. I saw that on another review. It’s very professional to offer solutions for your viewers instead of just complaining about an issue. Not pointing fingers. I know you agree. Long term fan here. Keep at it!
Hi Chris, I purchased one of these two weeks ago and I liked the knife but hated that micro bevel. I hand worked the grind down to zero then put a very slight micro bevel on the blade and now it is truly an incredible tool. I have had no problems with the sheath retaining the knife. Well worth the price any day and thank you for a great review. Cheers, Steve
@@toiletpaper5770 The so-called microbevel it originally came with was uneven and huge! I did take the main bevel down to no microbevel then put a very even and light microbevel on the blade. You can barely see it but that blade now goes through wood incredibly well.
The difference with a secondary bevel and “true” Scandi is how it slices. A secondary bevel creates a space between the wood and metal before it’s able to stick to each side of the blade, making it good for chopping and batoning, while a ‘true’ Scandinavian grind pushes the metal though wood easier as it doesn’t have to deal with the resistance from trying to separate the wood first, but the blade gets stuck in the wood more often while chopping and doesn’t do a very good job splitting a log into two pieces by batoning.
Once and for all, a puukko is a small traditional Finnish general purpose belt knife. Finland belongs not to the Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Norway and Danmark). Finland belongs to the Nordic countries (Scandinavia, Finland, Island and Faroe Islands). Now you know! 😄👍🏻
That's confusing, saying that Finland doesn't belong to a Scsndinavian country, and then say it belongs to Scandinavia.... :) Most people aren't up to awareness on such details.
@@TheChadWork2001 Sure can be. But it is the same as North America which includes Canada, US and Mexico versus Northern America which does not include Mexico.
Strikes me as being very comparable to the Mora Garberg. I think for the small difference in price this would be afar better choice give the steel and the handle. Chris thanks for the review , we can always expect you to be brutally honest in your assessment of products, it really helps the prospective customer in making the right decision, on where to spend their hard earned cash.
I got the bushcrafter a few years ago and carried it for about a year. Although it was a beautiful knife to my eyes, the grind on it made it feel like it was scared of wood and I felt like the size was too big to break out for every task. It was more like a fighter. I've ordered this one and I'm just going to reprofile it. Nice review! I was a custom furniture maker and metal fabricator so knives were daily tools for me...
Do you know what Puukko stands for.... ;) - its my native language, and simply means: Knife,- this knife has some design features from scandinavian/finnish knives, = very simple design, we are not for fancy designs...it jus has to work ok, as they say in one of your TV-shows:"this will cut".....
Buy a sheet of 3000 grit 3M Trizact , and glue a small portion on a block and polish that spine back to a shine. Also one of the best things for stropping you will ever find. I buy it off E-bay, about 8 bucks shipped, 9"x 4.5", lasts long time.
I read those comments on knife gods and just because it’s a pukko dosnt mean it will have a scandi grind a pukko is literaly just a finish working / hunting knife that’s it so the people that think anything different should look at the pukko knives from past they come in a few different grinds even a old rapala wood handle filet knife is considered a pukko
I own the Benchmade 202 Leuku + the 200 Puukko; both paired w/ Kydex, "Architect" sheaths from Armatus Carry (in Tru-Hide Whip). Decisions to purchase these knives were in great part, based upon your reviews. No regrets! Thanks again, Chris, and really enjoy your channel... 🇺🇸🔪🔪👏🏼💯
I wonder what the hardness on that 3v is? 60-62hrc(I'd hope for 62-63hrc but doubt a production company would put in the effort) would be nice since it's not a chopper. The slight decrease in toughness would be worth the trade for better edge retention. But if I had to guess though, 58-60hrc is where it's at. Could be better.
The plastic liner inside the tuppi (as long as were are throwing finnish puukko vocabulary around) is there not to protect the sheath but you. If you fall hard on the puukko without the liner the blade can go through the leather and cut your leg artery open and kill you. The liner can (and often is in original puukkos) made out of wood.
The Cold Steel Master Hunter is priced at $119.95, also in 3V steel, (although not made in the USA). You may favor the sheath over the Benchmade Puukko as well. I agree with you about the spine. I like a 90 degree as well. It's usually a high end knife thing (LT Wright, Bark River, etc...). That being said, I am interested in the Puukko. So many knives, so little money! Thanks for the review Chris.
Between your review and BDK review it's going to be a present to myself for my 60th birthday I enjoy camping and smoke so the spine isn't a big deal to me I got a bic
Buy original Finn or Norwegian Puukko knives. Just bought a Juha Perttula from Lamnia. Everyone who has bought one has been blown away by the knife. Check it out.
The question of does it have a secondary bevel is important because actual scandi grind knives are a pain in the ass to sharpen. I'd have not purchased one of these if it was actually scandi grind. They made a great call doing a traditional saber grind on this.
Glad you did an initial thoughts review on the Benchmade 200 Puukko. I've considered a pre order, and with outfitter/guide discounts it gets to the $100 mark. Not something I actually need with this genre well covered, yet looks like a very handy design. I like overmolded handles... gripy, warm, comfortable predictable. Ergos look great. Go the way of MORA with day-glo or Hi-Viz plus better availability and we'll see an affordable option in 3V.
Alaska Raft Connection - Alaska-BushRafter the cold steel master hunter is another good option in 3v 119 I like its looks over this this is kinda a survival knife disguised as a pukko same thing with master hunter not a good hunting knife but both are good survival knives
@@bp-hx9ts The thing I like about Cold Steel is their ability to continually deliver affordability concerning even higher end steel selections. Cold Steel consistently from my experience also has good Q/C when it comes to reasonable fit and finish at the asking prices. Alaska Raft Connection - Alaska-BushRafter I would consider it a survival knife or a general camp knife for my needs I don’t want anything bigger then 6 inches for my main fixed blade
Pretty nice. But a sabre with a secondary bevel so it does not have the wood cutting ability of traditional puuko. It will of course slice well, way it is grinded. It is close to a puuko concerning blade geometry and handle geometry. An inspired piece. Nice specs except the type of grind if woodcraft is the most important ability. For me it is puukko-shaped hunting kitchen or hunting knife. One can hear from the wood cutting it does not bite well. But feather it does well :)
Oh oh I see blood lol. I always have blood when working outside. Good demo. I bought one and like you the spine had to be tweaked. And I did make my own sheath. 👍

Traditional pukos were never 0°. They were actually slightly convex. The zero degree thing probably started on UA-cam and took off. I dunno. They are fantastic at carving soft woods but will roll or chip easier then other grinds with heavish use
Very nice knife... Made in USA... Great steel... Love that handle... Good price especially since its a full tang... That's a lot of 3V for the money... Probably wont replace my Mora Bushcraft Black anytime soon... Unless something "happens" to it...

Looks like a knife you would like using for all sorts of tasks, including food prep. Of course, real men only need a knife for food prep to cut the meat off hanging over the spit. LOL It is a keeper.
PM101 do you live in the Cleveland/Akron area? It's where I live, I heard thunder last night too
He's in columbus
Is 3V stainless?
It’s 5/10 on corrosion resistance so it’s really not stainless
I have had this knife for three years. No problems. Benchmade dc'd this one and the 202. That was a mistake.
Great feathers. 👍 I only do summer salts in the wood with chainsaws....hahaha!
Oh man... I was looking at this and decided not to get it because I am terrible with a saber grind. I think you may have just sold me though. Hoping to get an ultra light bushcrafter for Christmas. If not I think I will go for this😀😀😀🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 I love the blade size
Just bought a Bravo One in 3V because of you. I love it! Damm you
Anyone have a tip for how to sharpen the spine? My file does almost nothing to this 3v 😄
The right grit sandpaper or the right grit sharpening stone
Try getting a new file lol. I did mine with a file and it only took a minute or so.
I'm sticking with the 110 or 140,but ty chris.
Nice knife. Good review. Think I would just buy 7 or 8 Mora Companions for that.price though or 4 Bushcraft Blacks. Got my BB for $30.38 at Sportmens Warehouse a few weeks ago..
Great review! Thanks brother!!
Thanks for another great review!:-)
love the videos keep em coming, seems like a pretty nice knife
What ferro rod fits the sheath?
Anyone find a leather sheath replacement?
I got it for 110 dollars.
Pretty thick behind the edge but i like it.
Your intro is dope!
Jaktkit KNV2 is a clear contender , I think I like the jaktkit overall design better esp the kydex sheath...Still I like this knife it looks great yet makes me wonder how their Bushcrafter 162 is 80$ more? Kinda annoying esp after so many years that knife hasn't dropped in price.
They are selling well, that’s why, and why I don’t know, a Sabre ground blade is horrible for woodworking.
i just picked o ne up for under $100. boom great knife
