Y'know this may be a hopeless pipe-dream, but if Studio Ghibli ever made an animated movie based off a VG property, I would want it to be Secret of Mana, and I could totally imagine the musical score resembling what I just heard! Bravo!
It's funny how a 16 bit video game music could be so EPIC. SOM has some of the best music in video game history. Even today's games isn't this epic. What a fantastic treat...and this music will live on forever.
imo its what most of todays games lack. i mean, just look at SoM. it had so many flaws. horrible dialogs especially in the translated versions. not the most diversified combat system and the graphics are nothing compared to todays games (for its time it was great though). but what it made right was make you connect to every character and encounter in the game and the music added so much emotional depth to the game and its overall atmosphere. its imho what the games of recent years are missing. they are mostly made for consumption and fast gameplay and are thrown away afterwards. its good to make money but their isnt nearly as much artistry left as we used to be. TL;DR
This was supposed to be the snes cd add on but Sony left. They took the soundtrack from a CD and threw it on the cartridge. How is this not the best soundtrack for any snes game considering?
To all the hurtful commenters: please chill and appreciate the talent and hard work presented by dedicated artists. It might not be your favorite version of the game's soundtrack, but there's no reason to sling negativity. Smell the roses. Appreciate the beautiful sky. Enjoy lovely music! Only you can decide to enjoy life's beauty.
Interestingly this piece is actually the one that the original four composer loved the most (Uematsu, Kikuta, Shimomura, and Mitsuda) because how it is a retelling of the game's story through music and not just a simple arrangement. Uematsu loved it so much that he allowed the arrangers made this kind of arrangement for his works (Final Symphony I & II).
Secret of Mana was actually rather big in Germany. But I know what you mean, and I'm just glad my Grandma got it for us when we where kids, my brother sister and I that is.
Valtonen did such a masterful job arranging this suite and keeping the texture changing throughout. I especially like the way he kept returning to the title theme. Doing this, rather than just trying to hit as many melodies from the game as possible gives the listener a "hero" of sorts to follow and watch for, making it easier for someone unfamiliar with the game to enjoy the music out of its original context.
OMG! So cool they played "The Oracle"!!! That song always freaked me out in the game! XD And "Rose and Ghost", just beautiful! I only miss "Spirit of the Night".
Surprised they did Oracle, and extra surprised when they started without the kecak and then did an approximation of it midway through. Really awesome! After that I would be interested in hearing their take on Steel and Snare.
I can not even begin to express how much I adore the sound effects the composer ended this medley with, much like how she started it. Of course the music was great too, that's a given, but it's not everyday you hear such an original way to make such very ordinary sounds!
I rented this game back in the 90's.. its was the most money my parents would ever allow for a game.. I eventually convinced them to buy it for me.. It is by far my fave game of all time. If a someone mentions a game and you get a tear in your eye.. its your favorite game.
@Sabrina902 I couldn't agree more. I sat here listening to this and found myself so happy that people have turned the music from something like a video game into a beautiful orchestral work of art. I just sat here and relived each moment of the game as it was played out through the music. I'm happy to see video games being taken more seriously and brought into a medium like this.
Throughout this entire thing, I could not get visions of the movie "Spirited Away" by Hayao Miyazaki out of my head...especially during "Ghost and Rose"...I could just picture Joe Hiashi conducting this... Thats how good this production was...wow. I'm in awe of this...I want a CD or something to come out of this project.
I know! How can anyone possibly fall asleep while this magical music is magically preformed by these "magicians"?!? (if I may call them that way) P.S. I love your word for expression, not often I hear it...I like uncommon words. ^^
Flamey's song at the beginning was awesome! And Thanatos' theme XD. That theme always scared me when fighting him when i was a kid. Then Pandora Village OMFG! Amazing job!!!
The whole medley is awesome, but 7:50 and following is pure goosebumps, just raw emotion...... and I've got tickets for Symphonic Fantasies 2012!!!!!! SO damn looking forward to it! :)
Ha-HAA! YEAH! Man, I was surprised to see The Oracle in the list. Had no idea how they'd do it, but they did it! They freakin' did it! Just as creepy as the original; perhaps more so. Love the added singers (that sound like they're from Young Sherlock Holmes).
Meh, the primal energy you'd hear from a genuine kecak/gamelan performance dwarfs it. Check out the film Baraka for a sample, and then some of Geinoh Yamashirogumi's work for examples
This is awesome in music form. So far the Secret of Mana medley is my favorite part of this concert, but that could have something to do with the fact that this is the first time I've heard a really good Secret of Mana arrangement.
ich danke dir... ich war schon so traurig weil ich die live-übertragung des konzertes verpasst hatte (ich hab nur das ende (final fantasy und chrono trigger) mitbekommen echt....danke!
Truly a shame that "Leave Time For Love" was not included, that to this day remains one of my all-time favorite final maze themes. It was such an awesome and hook-filled piece of music.
@Drakerrr the thing that made the song be so special is that it is discordant and dissonant; there is nothing agreable or harmonic in Oracle, it is why it is such a good boss song, but they can't hallow discordant noises in a symphony, so yeah it looses some pressure
@Sabrina902 video games, to me, are the ultimate form of art. It combines storywriting, music, drawing, painting, etc. Of course, we're not talking about Spongebob Squarepants, or simulation games (to me, shooter or rts games somewhat fall in the simulation genre).
i liked the faster, uplifting songs SOM had. "friends" and the Potos theme would have been nice. Salamando would have been awesome, oh and the palace theme. Can't forget the pureland and upperland forest. Ice country... and the list goes on. good job guys, i liked the pandora segment. like the other guy said, the lich theme really lacked, but i'd still come to the show to see this anytime. Good job!
One that doesn't seem to mentioned in the description is the music from the battle with Thanatos starting at 2:42. (My version of the sound track calls it the Sorcerer, but then mine also calls the title track Angel's Fear so it's clearly a different translation.)
@Sabrina902 We're talking epic games like this. In the old days, we'd tell stories using books, paintings and music. These type of games combine them all. Of course, games are childish, but that's only because the first generation to play these games were children back then. I bet anything, those of us who know the beauty of this game would gladly play a more mature, serious version of this game, retaining its great quality.
@spirallingshape I must agree with this. I have yet to find any rearrangement of that song that approaches satisfaction. None of them seem able to hit the horror and awful hype of the original. If we are permitted one teensy criticism of this greatness, that is it.
Where the hell was "Meridian Dance" ?? How the HELL could you do any sort of Secret of Mana reprisal without THAT? That and "The Oracle" are the two most Epic songs in Video game history. And the watered down the oracle and turned it into this slow beat.. and left out Meridian dance totally! Those gripes aside, everything ELSE was epic......
Only way this could have been ANY better, was with an orchestral version of "Danger!", the boss battle song. You KNOW they would have made that beyond epic! >:D
I agree with you, they should have put one in the beginning and one in the end. And don't forget What the Forest Taught Me, A Wish, Flight Into the Unknown and Calm Before the Storm! :D
Shame of Square. They can't make anything like they used to back in the days Sakaguchi worked for them (prior to the Square-Enix fusion). Today it's all about flashy things and trying new things that don't work. Square, stick to what you're good at, and give us another true classic like FFV, FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, FFX, Secret of Mana, etc. This game definitely holds among the most special places in my childhood memories.
I mean, when SD5 comes out. :P I hope they make it as good as SD2. ^^ (P.S. Not a crap about SD5 is announced, but it's obvious they will release a fifth entry SOMEDAY...I say this just to not make further misunderstandings)
ça me rappelle la musique de George Auric pour la belle et la bête de Cocteau par endroits. Super suite d'après des musiques enchanteresses bien que venant d'une super nes.
@ocremix lol... its called sarcasm... but speaking of brad smith. did you really have to remove "mystic invasion" from the entire site? if my ipod blows up, how the hell am i suposed to find that song again? nvm i just found it... but still... its like you guys are saying "sorry, on second thought not remixy enough for us. dont bring that shit around here." other than that you have a great website, actually one of the best.
Y'know this may be a hopeless pipe-dream, but if Studio Ghibli ever made an animated movie based off a VG property, I would want it to be Secret of Mana, and I could totally imagine the musical score resembling what I just heard! Bravo!

Wish I could have gone to this! It's sad because it probably will never happen again..
+Zac Geraghty www.symphonicfantasies.com/
omg i LOVE choirs.
makes everything a 1000x more epic.
Valtonen did such a masterful job arranging this suite and keeping the texture changing throughout.

I wonder how many people in the audience had no idea what Secret of Mana was and were inspired to seek it out and buy it.
I cannot believe they adapted The Oracle to an orchestral arrangement. Incredible result!
OMG! So cool they played "The Oracle"!!! That song always freaked me out in the game! XD And "Rose and Ghost", just beautiful! I only miss "Spirit of the Night".
I could almost hear the flute say "oh shit" when they got to the flammie flight theme.
sheezy... hearing the theme where the hero gets banished from Potos Village brings back memories. I cried during that part when i was a kid!
Time stamps could not be more wrong both in part 1 as in this one.
Surprised they did Oracle, and extra surprised when they started without the kecak and then did an approximation of it midway through. Really awesome! After that I would be interested in hearing their take on Steel and Snare.

Plainly AWESOME! I wish I had known about this event in Cologne, I'd have been there, definetly!
It's really fantastic.
Fan of Secret of mana from Poland!
Iam getting old!!!
Remember my youth in great 90s
There are not many things I would say I love in this world, but Secret of Mana is one of them.

Gigantic. I cry about this.
Simply.. no words left
i always play this game, just because of the music, one of the best pieces is the upperland forest, also pure land
omg I wish they'd do the entire game ost....its just so amazing
Thank you so much for sharing this!
The whole medley is awesome, but 7:50 and following is pure goosebumps, just raw emotion...... and I've got tickets for Symphonic Fantasies 2012!!!!!! SO damn looking forward to it! :)
This music is the soul of the game
Orchestras take game music to a whole another level of perfection.
Ha-HAA! YEAH! Man, I was surprised to see The Oracle in the list. Had no idea how they'd do it, but they did it! They freakin' did it! Just as creepy as the original; perhaps more so. Love the added singers (that sound like they're from Young Sherlock Holmes).
moins terriffante quand meme ocle song ALEXX!
Meh, the primal energy you'd hear from a genuine kecak/gamelan performance dwarfs it. Check out the film Baraka for a sample, and then some of Geinoh Yamashirogumi's work for examples
@@CripplingDuality I'll do that, thanks! I love gamelans!
This is awesome in music form.

Ich hab Tränen in den Augen.

I'm crying over here, beautiful exprerience!
Truly a shame that "Leave Time For Love" was not included, that to this day remains one of my all-time favorite final maze themes. It was such an awesome and hook-filled piece of music.
Well to be fair there were a couple dozen other fantastic pieces of music from Secret of Mana that didn't make it in, either
@Drakerrr the thing that made the song be so special is that it is discordant and dissonant; there is nothing agreable or harmonic in Oracle, it is why it is such a good boss song, but they can't hallow discordant noises in a symphony, so yeah it looses some pressure
I feel like i am in Heaven!!! Speakless... AWESOME!!!
Beautiful!
Omega Nostalgic Bomb. This is mindblowing.
@Sabrina902 video games, to me, are the ultimate form of art. It combines storywriting, music, drawing, painting, etc. Of course, we're not talking about Spongebob Squarepants, or simulation games (to me, shooter or rts games somewhat fall in the simulation genre).
I LOVED the part at 3:30 during the Dark Lich Theme!!!
i liked the faster, uplifting songs SOM had. Good job!
Damn good music. Awesome orchestra.

omgomgomgomg i can't believe an orchestra actually did this!! FUCK YES!!!
Thank you!

amazing.
I never knew a song like the oracle could be orchestrated. haha
I love this!
I cannot believe they did Premonition. Absolutely my favorite song from the game.
Love this.
@spirallingshape I must agree with this. I have yet to find any rearrangement of that song that approaches satisfaction. None of them seem able to hit the horror and awful hype of the original.
If we are permitted one teensy criticism of this greatness, that is it.
OK. I'll just go to the cellar and get my old 20inch Grundig TV,
my SNES and Secret Of Mana. =)
Be right back !
I want Seiken Densetsu 5's soundtrack to be recorded orchestrated by these magicians sent from above! :D
if only! that'd make my day everyday

@MustBe18YearsOrOlder
See how the title is "part 2/2"? Part 1 has the Meridian Dance. It's actually a wonderful arrangement too.
When they orchestrate this stuff, you can really see how it would sound if these songs were in films. Like, the song "Fear of the Heavens."
What an emotional ride! 5 *
1:34 to 2:15 is amazing.
I want a movie of SOM so bad now.
Only way this could have been ANY better, was with an orchestral version of "Danger!", the boss battle song. You KNOW they would have made that beyond epic! >:D
Sounded much more eerie and fucking awesome, and powerful, I don't know what your thinking?!?
I agree with you, they should have put one in the beginning and one in the end.
And don't forget What the Forest Taught Me, A Wish, Flight Into the Unknown and Calm Before the Storm! :D
das ist so ... wundervoll, ich wuenschte, ich wäre auch da gewesen -.-
Brr i got shivers and goosebumps! XD
Arnie Roth must be a big time video game nerd. I swear he conducts in like all these vids :).
i really wished i'd understand what they are singing...anyway...i LOVE it!
Having a real hard time matching the start of this with the original soundtrack.
First part of the medley was better i think.
All my childhood is here...
2:50 eeriest music to a game ever
Ceremony always freaked me the fuck out.
@MustBe18YearsOrOlder
Yeah I think you're right. sry :\
Maybe "Meridian Dance" is what I heard in that game concert in the 90's though
@unusualcatperson OMGWTFBBQ?!? HAHA! I didn't notice that! And your theory is absolutely correct! xD
man if only there was a symphonic version of that
Rose and Ghost is a piece of art
This game as a whole is a piece of art :p
At 3:00 , it took me 20 seconds to figure out what piece of music that was. Actually, I've been having that trouble throughout this performance.
Shame of Square. They can't make anything like they used to back in the days Sakaguchi worked for them (prior to the Square-Enix fusion). Today it's all about flashy things and trying new things that don't work. This game definitely holds among the most special places in my childhood memories.
You mean the dark star?
It would be Terrific !
Oh man I was so hoping for the ice palace theme.
5:22 what an Epic Instrument !!!
Check out the encore.
very niceee
You heard this on -THE RADIO?- Where the hell do you live that even has radio stations cool enough to play this kind of stuff?
Thanatos theme...very clever how they interpreted that!!
I mean, when SD5 comes out. :P
I hope they make it as good as SD2. ^^
(P.S. Not a crap about SD5 is announced, but it's obvious they will release a fifth entry SOMEDAY...I say this just to not make further misunderstandings)
I cried :(
ça me rappelle la musique de George Auric pour la belle et la bête de Cocteau par endroits. Super suite d'après des musiques enchanteresses bien que venant d'une super nes.
wonderfull! but i miss the song "a wish" from the crystal woods =)
I like the music part the best . . .
genial!
For the Oracle (Thanatos fight theme), they should've used a real Gamelan orchestra.
pplz they don't have play the game don't really care, the music is AWESOME ! Best snes RPG with FF3
This is how I heard the music while playing the game as a kid......and then rudely interrupted by a "mom" request.
I love the Oracle music :) (Dark Lich battle)
Wow Phantom and Rose too?!!! =D
I want to create 5 accounts JUST to thumbs this up t times!
That STILL wouldn't be 1/10th what it deserves though! :D
