    You can get good bokeh with that lens if you zoom in to 70mm and open to f2.8. I'm guessing you already know that now though.

    great video, I used to have this lens but I'm a prime fan and ended up selling it in the end. If you like your primes Jessica I highly recommend the canon 135mm f2 its amazing!!! I use it along with my 50mm 1.2L for fashion and general outdoor portraiture

      85mm f1.2 it's the best. 70-200 is nice you will get more shots. The 85mm f1.2 when you hit its spectacular. 70-200 is for wedding ceremonies and for soccer. I would never shoot portraits with it. I own both. Just the reaction people give you when you use the 70-200 they feel intimidated.

    I know it's been 2 years since this video was uploaded, but it helped me a lot with my decision.
    I use for portraits a lot my 50 f/1.8 that is really good but I wanted something new and also sharper. So I got myself a Canon EF 24-105 f4 L lens I love shooting outside with natural light after a whole bunch of reviews and this video I decided to order it. maybe tomorrow it will arrive.

    I LOVE the edit of your fashion photos! I spend days and days and days searching tutorials of that kind of tones but I don't get that effect in my photographs. Maybe a tutorial of the 2:08 to 2:26 photographs? I absolutely love the tones and I need that tones in my photographs.

    ah i completely agree! when i first got the 24-70mm 2.8 I kind of freaked out because i was trying to use it for more portrait based shoots and it wasn't working out. Then i started using it at more event/fashion shoots and it was a godsend! Its also really great for traveling when you don't want to carry more than one lens since it works for everything! I still use the 50mm 1.2 and the 85mm 1.2 the most since I shoot mostly portraits but I'm so glad I invested in the 24-70mm. :)

      +Meghal and Natasha Heya! I just saw both of your websites and instagrams! so talented! thanks for writing this comment on Jessica's video because I found another photographer to follow and aspire to be. I shoot with a 85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.4 and your portfolio is filled with awesome portraits. I've only been shooting portraits since October and as much as I want to get an 85 1.2, Im not sure which way to go with my lens purchases. Do I get a 24-70 like Jess or do I get a 35mm 1.4? Right now I'm doing TFP shoots and eventually I'd like to get paid haha. So, at the moment, I'm just doing portraits, but I'd like to start making money with senior pictures, then family portraits then weddings. I really want to do fashion portraits like you and Jessica do; I see you guys use a huge window for natural light, but do you use big strobes as well? Should I bother getting a 35 1.4 that costs $1300 or should I just get the 24-70 for several $$ more? I'm on instagram @kingrosalesphotography Your insight would be awesome!

    • @MeghalandNatasha
      @MeghalandNatasha 8 років тому

      +King Rosales Photography hello! If you're just starting out I wouldn't bother getting a new lens at all. Once you start doing paid work then i'd consider getting a new lens. I used the 50mm 1.4 for about 3 years before i considered upgrading (all of which i did client work with and i only upgraded because it started to break). If you do plan on getting into weddings, i'd say the 24-70 2.8 since its versatile. Yet, it is all up to you! I did weddings for a couple years and hated it so i still suggest waiting to buy a new lens until you start to do a lot more client work because you will get a feel of what you need. Even for the fashion stuff my sister and I do, we pretty much just stick to prime lenses. I use the 24-70mm for when i travel. I have the sigma art 35mm lens but i don't use it thatt much. As far as our lighting setup, we just shoot in front of a large window:) a couple of the photos we have done we used a large softbox but we haven't used that in a year or so because we just stick to window lighting. I hope this helps!
      -Natasha

    it's a brilliant lens. you can see me using it on my Dark Desert photoshoot. It has prime quality at all zoom lengths. I've tested it against several primes and it holds itself strong with them all. it's costly but this lens plus a 70-200 2.8IS L (mark 1 or 2) is all you need. I've also got a 35 1.4 art as it's beautiful. those 3 lenses are all I could ever need.

    Hi Jess... I owned both this lens and the 50mm you spoke of...Ive since sold them and switched
    completely to Zeiss Prime lenses. This is a Good Review, but not understanding how you are comparing
    quality of the 24-70 against a 50mm Prime? You said the photo came out sharper with the zoom
    compared to the prime. There are so many factors that play into image quality and sharpness.
    Comparing a prime lens to a zoom is like apples and oranges. The only way to properly compare
    them would be to shoot an image with the 24-70 at exactly 50mm focal length at the same f stop
    and shutter speed as an image taken with the 50mm prime... Otherwise its not really true comparison.
    I find it hard to imagine the image would be sharper with a zoom over a prime lens. But then again
    your camera settings play a big part in that too. I do agree that the 24-70 zoom would most likely be a
    better choice for you shooting weddings though...I'm not fan of zooms.. but the 24-70mm is a very good
    lens.

  • @WilliamKearns
    @WilliamKearns 8 років тому +4

    A 50mm, 35mm or a 24-70 zoom are not recommended for portraiture. Portraits gain a lot of benefit from the compression of longer focal length lenses. an 85mm up to a 200mm will give the most flattering results for portraits.

  • @FKfilmphotography

    And the 24-70 at 35mm compared to my sigma 35mm at the common aperture of 2.8, they are both identical! which is amazing because 2.8 for the 35 art is stopped down whilst for the Canon it's wide open! also the 35 is prime vs zoom. This fact alone means this lens should be bought period. don't buy the Tamron or any other counterparts. it's like night and day.

    It is not worth the upgrade from the 24-70 f2.8L MK1, it might have been if Canon would have put IS on it, just my 2 cents.

    • @floppychicken68
      @floppychicken68 8 років тому

      +Freddie Slaughter
      Yeah... as an 'upgrade' for sure, but if one could get a decent price for the used mki, the mkii would then be a definite go (at least for me) as I find the lens 'sharper' throughout the range, except for around 35mm (softer in the corners on the mkii) yet the 'center' of the mkii photos are unbelievably 'tack sharp'. Too bad such a pricey lens doesn't come with IS!!

  • @MrTacticalinuit

    • @JessicaKobeissi
      @JessicaKobeissi  8 років тому +3

      +Christopher Soule Hmmm...I've used both the 85 and 50, personally I prefer the 50. The 85 is WAYY too close for my preference, BUT if you're doing more portraits and like that creamy bokeh then the 85 would be perfect for you. 50 is more in the middle where you can do a full body portrait as well as close up.

    Do you find that you miss your 35 or 50 primes? I’m considering selling my 35 F1.4 in order to get the 24-70 F2.8. For weddings it’s a no brainer but I wonder if I would prefer it for outdoor portraits. Don’t worry, I also have the 85 F1.4 and the 70-200 which is what i prefer for portraits but I would occasionally pop out the 35 F1.4 when I want it a bit wider.

    Hi. Ok so like let me start off by saying a older guy who is jumping into photography really late in life. I bought the lens and yes it heavy and bulky. I have not mastered it just yet but my question to you is, does it make a difference what type of camera body you have? I am using the canon 7TI body but noticed you use like the R5 or R6 by the way are super expensive.

    I am sorry but after watching this you clearly don't know what your talking about. 2.8 is more than enough to get things out of focus and you need to learn how to use it. To me some of your images looked soft and not tack sharp. This lens is one of the best zooms out their. I suggest you try the 70-200 you will see as this lens is probably canons sharpest lens. Put some distance between the background and your subject then you will see what bokeh can be achieved from this lens.

    Fyi, the blurred background, or bokeh, function of the camera accomplished by choosing the right settings. On a Canon the "basic" menu is P, TV, AV or Manual (with customized presets). On a Canon, AV is the setting used to accomplish the "blurred" background, or bokeh (again, not the lens)

On other hand it can be a blessing to not be able to shoot video to force me focus on photo and take video with my smartphone for fun ).
      I also think about not getting a new camera for the moment and pay a little in order to repair my father's old film asahi pentax camera.

    In the photo at 2:36, the building in the background looks really distorted at both sides.

    I'm going to take a guess and say that you got this lens because of Lara Jade? I saw you comment on one of the photos in her group on Facebook and I may have fangirled a little. ^_^

      That's really cool! I'll definitely look up some of her work. And by the way, I just want to say you are doing an amazing job. You've grown a lot in the two years I've been watching and I love how down to earth you are! If you're ever in Grand Rapids, say hi!
