Control ring is revolutionary. I use it for changing ISO value as my values of shutter speed and aperture are usually fixed. Great for photo and video works
I think that the lock mechanism is for when the lens is stowed in a bag with the hood on. Sometimes the hood can catch on something, and start pulling the lens. I have had a few lenses do this so I try to engage the lock (if there is one) before putting the lenses away.
Thank you, finally someone mentions this back cap issue with RF. It is horrible. Both Canon EF and Nikon F caps are symmetric and can be put on blindly in 3 possible orientations, worse case turn 120 degree. Here this thing jams if put on wrongly, requires up to 360 degree turn. Stunning. When I wrote about that in dPreview forum, Canon fanboys who probably never change a lens in dim light or on the move, replied with a hurricane of objections "what, a lens cap, you are so wrong to write that." It is sad that Canon, a pro oriented camera maker commits this unforced error with this cap design.
I have the tamron 24-70mm G2 F2.8 Lens....but when I get the new canon eos R5 I want upgrade to this lens....would u do a comparison video between both of these lens.
Looks about as good as the other 24-70 2.8 from Sony and Nikon, also at 2200+ usd. I think the new Sigma will be the disruptive lens, because it could offer similar quality at literally half the price. I also love the photo at 14:00.
The Canon 24-70 2.8 with IS should have been on the last Canon 24-70 2.8 II. Nikon had their 24-70 2.8 with VR for long time. And now the have it for the mirroless only. Since I use two cards for weddings on my Canon 5dkmk3 (yes I had few times when one card went bad) so the the Canon mirrorless with one card DOES NOT work for "ME", After playing with the Sony 7aiii and the camera having built-in IS, I sold all my canon cameras and few old lenses. I got two Sony 7aiii and the Sony 24-70 2.8, I also kept my Canon 85 1.4 IS which with the MC-11 works great with the Sony. I feel Canon needs to move faster and their marketing dept listen more to people comments as many are switching after even decades with them. i was over 20 years with Canon and my clients are doing their events and not waiting on companies to do their special days. Hi Jared! Bid fan here of your videos. Hope to see you when I go to Philly next time!
Omg! I just shot my first wedding video this weekend predominantly on a Canon 5D Mk II and a 50mm 1.4 as that's what I could afford. I just saw a review for a Canon R5 and it brought me here. My mind is blown. 🤯
That lock _does_ make a difference. The EF II version had it too. I walk around all day with it hanging low at my hip and it'll creep out. Whether it's from gravity or the barrel rotating, I can't be sure just yet. The old one would fall out just from gravity. I use the RF on an R5.
It will probably give a lot of vignetting using filters at 180 mm f2.8, as it's too narrow. It should have been 68,2 mm minimum, without filters. So wait for Sigma 70-200 sports lens. Guess it will be announced sometimes in the first quarter of 2020.
I' am using the new Canon EOS R5 MARK II since a few weeks with my EF 70 - 200 2,8 III with the EF - R adapter at the concerts for photos and videos but I have ordered the RF 24 - 70 2, 8 . I hope the quality will be great.
Nice Finally ❤️😍 but regarding the ring, there is an option that the ring only does something if you push the shutter a little bit, so that shouldn’t be that big of a problem. I have this lens and it already earned it expenses back, period. The close focusing made me make a lot of extra cool macro shots
Please dont do my mistake i did buy the 70-200 first . I really regret i se the first lens to buy is 24-105. But between 24-70 and 70-200 offcours ill take 24-70 then buy 70-200 if i can
Hey Jared great review! For the photo at 14:05 would there be any benefit to Eye AF though? For the focal length, Aperture and subject distance, wouldn't Face Detect AF be enough to get his whole face in focus?
I have this lens and have been using it on the ‘R’ for a couple of weeks now and I completely agree, it’s amazing! It really makes the R feel like a ‘real’ camera and I would argue it is one of the best pieces of Canon glass ever made! ❤️

@@MarkoNara You can certainly go through and find a a handful of areas, sometimes that the German engineers worked on, though most of it was done by American engineers in traditional units. I just order the RF 24-70mm lens. Thanks for the review friend. On top of that! is it comes with the hood for lens? and what is the Polarizer size of it?
Hi Jared great series of videos. The reason they've added a lock (1:26), I hope, is to stop zoom creep when it's pointing down on a tripod eg overhead product or macro shots. My EF 24-70 is smooth and tight but the zoom creeps ever so slowly when pointing down - so much so I've had to use gaffer tape or elastic bands :/

I wish it wasnt so expensive . Will have to opt for used EF version with adapter. I just got the r6 Mark ii. Still have to set it up following your tutorial
Great review! very useful. Please do o comparison between RF trinity and EF trinity. I'm excited about the RF 24-70, but still can't bear the price, compared to ef 24-70 f2.8. Will it be a bad decision to get ef version for EOS R and save some money to get another ef prime?
Wait, what do you mean "the EOS R and the EOS RP do not have image stabilized censors". I thought that they do have in body image stabilization because on my EOS RP I can turn on and off IS in the settings. Is this switch on the RF 24-70 just a faster and easier way to turn that feature on and off without having to go into settings?
Picking up the 24-70 for that shot of the guitarist in the crowd was a happy accident. You'd probably be tempted to go wider, but 24 is just wide enough to provide context yet still keep the subject large and prominent in the scene. You'd have the 24mm with the 15-35 of course but you wouldn't necessarily try it on the spot :) That's a great shot Jared.
Debating on picking up either the RF or EF II version for my EOS R. $1600 vs $2300 with the purpose of shooting events like Quinceaneras with on camera flash. Do you believe the image quality difference warrants the extra $700 or would the EF II be just fine?

@@Mandowar69 I just bought one but Canon Rumours says EOS R to drop a few hundred around end Sept. www.canonwatch.com/canon-eos-r-firmware-update-and-price-drop-coming/
How is the dust sealing on this particular RF lens? I've heard photographers having a nightmare with Tamron and Sigma's current 24-70 due to dust getting sucked in to the lens due to poor sealing on the extending lens barrel. To your knowledge, does the RF F2.8 24-70mm L have a filter between the extending barrel and the main barrel to prevent dust from getting sucked into the lens? Or in your extensive use of the lens, have you detected any issues with dust [long term use]?
Ok, one lens to rule them all--Do you pick the 24-70mm or the 15-35mm? Not both. would you miss the wide-angle features with the 24-70mm, or would you miss the extra mm with the other?
Well, just starting out with my R6 with the 24-105 f4.0. It's great as an all-around lens. I think I will bite the bullet and get this 24-70 f2.8, with later additions of the 15-35 f2.8 and the 70-200 f2.8 Yes, the trinity. I thought about a prime, or maybe even the 28-70 f2.0, but that, I would rarely take advantage of properly.
I wish they somehow could have kept this version all internal with grouped elements so the lens didn't extend out when zooming, but Ill take what I can get - I own it and it is my most used lens but wow is it heavy. Canon any chance of a pancake 24-70 ;)
Ok I need help! @ the time the tamron 24/70 2.8 was said to beat out the ef Mount 27/70 2.8 due to its built in is! So what’s a better choice for the r6
Jared, if we want to make a proper review of this lens, we should directly compare it with the legendary Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II USM lens - preferably on a DSLR (not a mirrorless with adaptor). Because if the "old" L glass on a DSLR gives better image quality results, that would be a shock for the "mirrorless dream"! Do we dare make such a comparison ?! Thanks for the wonderful reviews, by the way, keep working with passion!
But how can you shot in full manual without changing the ISO on demand? The EOS R works great with auto iso, but learning how to handle the control ring might be important.
Hey Jared, been catching up on your vids since my 1 week old purchase of my R6. I am coming from an older 5D mkii and I consider myself more pro-am. in my gear bag I carry an ef-l 16-35 f2.8 and an ef-l 24-105 f4. I was going to sell my 5d mkii and maybe my 24-105 to purchase either this 24-70 f2.8 or the 28-70 f2.0. If you had to choose one of the 2 mentioned as your daily which would be your choice?
Indeed, see canon's white paper, page 8 for explanations and diagrams. Nikon's Z is merely 1mm larger, in a sense they simply matched the diameter of the EF...
Having no luck "on the internet," thought it best to turn to the expert: Jared, how well does the IS system of the RF 24-105 L work with the IS system of the Canon R6 or R5? Which IS system takes precedence? If neither, how are they coordinated? How are conflict issues resolved?
Would be interesting indeed but very few chances that happens. Haven't you noticed that there is already never any direct comparisons of the new ML lenses vs their more "ancient" DSLR versions...? So I guess it will be the same for ML lenses no direct comparison from a brand to another.
Hey, i bought the 24-70 and yesterday i got a shoot in nevel/low light. And my eos R can't find the faces. He even not focus on anything. Do you also have problems in low light?
You cant compare (accurately) eye auto focus from two different venues, two different lighting setups, and different lens, and say you have a definitive answer on which BODY has the better eye auto focus. Too many variables. If you shootin both the same night one after the other then yes.
That lock is most necessary for me. When walking around with the camera on your shoulders, the camera lens always bumps your body and it often extends the lens. That’s just me though, I think. Lol
Jared, you can't accidentally change anything with a control ring, the shutter release button has to be half pressed at the same time to make any change with the control ring on the lens.
Hey Jared. Question. I have this lens and I noticed it has some significant distortion (stretching) of the image near the sides. This usually only becomes noticeable when I turn the camera sideways for vertical shots (resulting in elongated heads for example). Is there any fix for this besides shooting larger than necessary and cropping? I tried fiddling around with the correction in PS but it doesn't seem to make any perceptible difference.

I never put my caps back on any lenses I'm using on a shoot. They just go in and out of my side bag and I make sure before each shoot that I don't have any random shrapnel in there. Anyway, just curious.
Apart from that, keep it up and thanks for all the useful, candid and truly entertaining content over the years.
Should I Sell my Canon 80D to put money down on EOS R? Really thinking about doing this...
Did you do it? I have a 60D and the leap to an R would be amazing. Sooo tempted but coronavirus means no work.
Kieran Scott I have not. R is so pricey. Just going to save up lol
@@Mandowar69 Hopefully the price drops once the R5/R6 is released soon.
Kieran Scott that’s true. I really do hope so. I mean the 80d still hasn’t really drop in price either. So I really doubt they’ll drop it on the R
@@Mandowar69 I just bought one but Canon Rumours says EOS R to drop a few hundred around end Sept. www.canonwatch.com/canon-eos-r-firmware-update-and-price-drop-coming/
If Canon doesn't finally release a RF 35mm f1.2 this year I may just cave and buy this.
Hi sir I have some of the old ef back caps, can I use them to put on the new rf lenses ?
How is the dust sealing on this particular RF lens? I've heard photographers having a nightmare with Tamron and Sigma's current 24-70 due to dust getting sucked in to the lens due to poor sealing on the extending lens barrel. To your knowledge, does the RF F2.8 24-70mm L have a filter between the extending barrel and the main barrel to prevent dust from getting sucked into the lens? Or in your extensive use of the lens, have you detected any issues with dust [long term use]?
Can you pull it like that without twisting it and not messing up the lens?
Yes but it wouldn't be practical during a shoot.
Ok, one lens to rule them all--Do you pick the 24-70mm or the 15-35mm? Not both. would you miss the wide-angle features with the 24-70mm, or would you miss the extra mm with the other?
you need both. or get a 50mm additionally to the 15-35
Seems to me, the 15-35 would be my first buy, then the 70-200, then? Maybe a 50mm.
Can I use this lens on my Canon EOS 60D?
Will you review the 24-70 FE from sigma when it will be available?
Of course.
I wish they somehow could have kept this version all internal with grouped elements so the lens didn't extend out when zooming, but Ill take what I can get - I own it and it is my most used lens but wow is it heavy. Canon any chance of a pancake 24-70 ;)
Have you compared the 28-70 F2 to the 24-70 F2.8? Which would you prefer if you can only afford to get one.
I enable the control ring to select the AF method, and it's been working great!
Fro knows.... how to get a Canon guys juices flowing!
Can you please compare 35 prime with 35 on 24-70
My EOSR have no issues eye af in any low light scenarios, but then again there have been software updates after this video was released.
I'll have mine next week. Let's see how it is!
But how can you shot in full manual without changing the ISO on demand? The EOS R works great with auto iso, but learning how to handle the control ring might be important.
The lock is if you put the camera lens down in your bag. Very useful.
Jammin Jessie is best DJ on 104.5. Sunday nights at 9 are my favorite. I like these review videos.
The ef caps actually fit on the rf lenses without any issue.
Btw, the RF mount is not “of course much larger” than EF, still.. it’s the exact same 54mm internal diameter. 👍🏽
For the record, The EF 24-70 II USM cost 2700€ when it was new. I don't know how it was abroad
Would be cool to see a comparison between the 24-70s from Canon, Nikon, Panasonic and Sony to actually see who has the best lenses
Yea, thus why i didn't say definitively. I said in my opinion using it in the situations i've used it in.
That lock is most necessary for me. When walking around with the camera on your shoulders, the camera lens always bumps your body and it often extends the lens. That’s just me though, I think. Lol
Can it work eos 7D mark ii canon?
Can you make a video on must have lens for the canon 90d please 🙏
10:19 Yes there's lens flare, on the back of his knee
very small but def there
And on the light bank on the floor too, but not a big deal
Fro really should make a guide for capturing motion in jpeg.
I remember a decade ago when Jared was doing reviews in Allen's shop 🤗
Jared, you can't accidentally change anything with a control ring, the shutter release button has to be half pressed at the same time to make any change with the control ring on the lens.
it depends on your settings.
Hey Jared.
