People tend to forget that way back when in the early days of pro recording studios there were NO purpose made monitors, NO acoustic measurements, NO turn key solutions. That is exactly how monitors were built, tailor made to the room and use case. And to be honest, even today, if what you are after is top notch performance in your room a custom made solution is still the best option.
Great job and I loved the video series!!!
P.S.: I love the idea of a kit!

And that's partly why everything back from this era sounds like shit. Today we are measuring studio monitors because the ear in itself is a poor sensor, and because what we ear depends strongly on our mood and on what we are focusing.

Releasing it as a modular kit sounds like a great idea! I was honestly hoping you’d offer that option anyways, since shipping fees exist… That being said, while I am incredibly hyped about the these and quite frankly extremely impressed by what you’ve been able to put together in such a small amount of time, I am unfortunately not in a position where I could spend that much on monitoring, even though I’d most certainly love to. I’ll definitely be watching their future development! Gotta have goals and stuff to look forward to!

Thank you for the excellent videos of your journey through the process of building and testing your monitor speakers. Having spent many years in different phases of the audio business, I appreciate you being honest about the trial and error nature of this work and the acknowledgement that nothing in the realm of reproducing sound is free. All choices offer both ups and downs. The three way plate amps you are working with are very interesting to me. I'm currently using pairs of Kali In-8v2 or MTM speakers with a servo'd sub in a mid field setup. My room allows lot of space to the sides and behind the speakers in a stereo only configuration. The MSRP of your proposed design exceeds the entire signal chain of my system. So I don't seem to be a likely customer. Watching the videos was enjoyable for their excellent content, high quality production and entertaining presentation. It seems to me that your thought process is quite clear and correct about a possible product launch. Best wishes, Steve

Incredible stuff, the modular speaker idea is fantastic for those who start on a budget or don’t have the space at the beginning.
The rant on measurements was hilarious and totally agree it all comes down to the room it’s designed for.
I like that your measurement is based on number of revisions/clients feedback rather than some scientific measurements. At the end of the day music all comes down to how good it sounds and if the clients are happy, then happy days.
Thanks for the great videos on your journey to building your own studio monitors. Looking forward to revisiting the speakers I built for my home studio years ago now that I can afford some more expensive components.

  • @ashleycox432

Another excellent video. Acoustic suspension designs were used in many models by Acoustic Research in their prime, many of which easily stack up to the best speakers today. I'd be interested in seeing the uncut 40 minutes of talk about TS values. I like the idea of a flatpack kit. You could also offer the plans with the CAD files for a fee, plus a sheet with all the driver models listed and perhaps a kit of parts to build a simple crossover for passive use. That gives people the flexibility to build from whatever material they choose and to source parts from wherever they like, keeps the costs down and also limits your responsibility in terms of supporting the product. If you offered everything as a full kit (presumably you'd include drivers in that) you're obligated to support the build, the level of which could vary depending on the builder's DIY skill, and you would have to handle any warranty claims with parts you don't manufacture (drivers, crossover parts etc). If cabinet drawings / plans, CAD files for CNC cutting and perhaps a crossover schematic or PCB and kit of parts were offered at a good price I'd almost certainly build a pair.

What a great video guys - love your comments on the theoretical approach ... fully agree - the real world looks different it's all about your ears, customers, room etc etc
A modular kit - The idea/concept of modularity is great - lovin' it . But construction might be a challenge.
Your offering - would love to have this either as
    1. a kit OR
    2. instructions only incl the design ( measurements, crossover frequencies etc ). So I can buy the speakers and build the cabinets myself.
Go to market .... hmm that's not an easy job and requires Marketing & Sales budgets not to mentioned customer support. Even when providing a kit customer support will be required - I don't know if you want this since this is not your core business.
The easiest way to go is to sell your "intellectual property" aka all the hard work you put into this project.

I have lot of wood working tools so for me I don't need the Flat Pack, especialy if it is shipped to the US would reduce the cost. Thanks guys, so much. Just watched all 3 parts. Stumbled across your channel today via YT algorithm and it's stonkin'. I built my own heavily braced 25/50mm MDF cabs to run what just happens to be almost your initial desired set up (Volt RV3143, VM752, but with Scanspeak D3004 with Hypex FA503 Fusion amps and it sounds 'kin great... in my house. My stumbling block is due to time constraints with paid work (I'm a maker)and I'm still getting used to the software for measuring and fine tweaking the crossover designs for the same reason but its a game changer it really is. The value for money is outstanding nowadays and I sense some industry discomfort for the potential loss it brings for those who charge great sums needlessly imo. I personally really enjoyed some previous sealed enclosure designs I've made and my thoughts very much echo yours with the results, especially on my old long term fave, the 10" Volt B2500 drive unit. 12 months a go I took the leap to the larger 12" for this and opted for ported as experiment alongside selling some great sounding Ayre amp and DAC to fund the Hypex transition, I've not regretted a moment of it. I hardly ever comment on forums/YT but you guys get a massive thumbs up for your sincere efforts and giving such huge value.

You've done an amazing job. I think tweakability is the key to match the speaker to our room. Current DSP allows us to tune it as we want. A Kit would be Indeed so nice, specialy the conpact 3way!! But it's unrealistic to think anybody can achieve a good result without any acoustic knowledge, equipement or help (here you are).
It seams that this experience was a lot of fun for you guys!
Massive thank you from France for your channel and all you've done.

Echoing the others, would love a DIY kit, could be a fun way to personalize them. Love the work you guys are doing. It also seems to me like you're really enjoying the challenge!

Excellent, intutitive and, above all, talking the language of studio and sound pros with just the right degree of technical knowledge to back it up. Using your ears and experience to guide you - whoever heard of such a crazy concept?! Count me in, for a kit. 100%. How about producing just a design/build information pack as an alternative, giving all the details and where to source the components, drivers and associated electronics?

I'm impressed. I think this is the first DIY speaker build I've seen that was done by professionals, and which is put to use for real work. Normally I'm suspicious of DIY speaker builds, because who is this person and what do they even know about audio? I'll trust you guys on this one!

I really dig the tower idea using the tweeter-mid as a separate pod sitting on top of the woofers, reducing the front baffle surface area around the drivers.

I think that’s the next idea I’ll get the router out for! That worked fabulously well when I was using the bass end of our Quested monitors to evaluate the mids and tweets

Thanks so much for producing yet another info packed video. Leaders will always be criticized and we truly understand the immense value of what you are doing and the potential it has. Keep going, you'll are awesome! Would be great to have the kit option. Guessing, when we import in India, it will become double the cost, at 6,000 pounds for a pair of speakers. Will closely watch your channel for further developments. Thanks again!

Well done series.... really nice video quality. Sorry you needed to add the rant. Otherwise, what a journey. I would love the kit version. Speakers, wood, electronics. Me love great sound as I create super custom wedding videos for my clients. It would be cool to hear how the sound is...or sounds. Thanks again from across the pond. Good stuff.

Trouser flapping is important for PAs, especially when it's coming from radiant speakers running pink noise. Centre of the room trouser flap equals unity gain for the space. Then add 15% for meat absorption when the punters arrive.

Hi, I was the guy who made the "the cabinet ended up as an afterthought. No baffle roundovers" comment.
First off, don't read too much into forum talk, it is the equivalent of pub banter. Minor optimizations aren't going to make or break those speakers, and expecting you to hit Genelec build quality on your first pair of DIY speakers is unfair. People just get uptight when you throw around "BEST" on the internet.
However, if you are willing to take feedback, here is some. The roundover you have present is quite small, and won't fully smooth out diffraction, which is a valid concern for speakers with such a wide dispersion pattern. The approach I use on my own designs is cut a 8" concrete pillar mold in half, epoxy to the side of the cabinets, coat with resin, paint, fill with mineral wool, and then cap off with 1/8" ply. This creates a 4" roundover with no cavity resonance.
Additionally, using T/S parameters for cabinet tuning can be slightly misleading. It is better to use Large Signal Modeling, so that you can check suspension and motor linearity as the driver moves. If you know your listening SPL, you should cabinet tune for the driver parameters at that input voltage, rather than at rest. Klippel has an LSI software package for doing just this. Unfortunately, this is cost prohibitive for one-off DIY projects due to the measurement equipment and software license cost.
Hope you have a great day, and enjoy doing Atmos mixing!

The diffraction doesn’t seem to be a noticeable issue in our testing and working on the speakers so far, but thanks for sharing the knowledge! We’d love for some of the forum folk to hear the speakers at some point. Maybe in the future that will be possible

Sealed also means a less complex phase response. That means it is cleaner output (whether you can hear the sudden phase change is up to your proclivity towards hearing phase ( yes that was meant to be circular)). A smoother phase shift as the driver drops off means it is easier to integrate with a sub.
