@@fatherandsonreactions HEY That's me, thanks for the shout out! In 1978 I saw Chicago at Soldier Field for their Saturday in the Park concert. They ended playing for almost 4 hours with no breaks. Members would leave the stage but someone else was always playing something from drum solos to horn jam sessions to Terry's guitar work. This whole concert captures the sound of the original line up that was easily Hall of Fame quality before the death of Kath and that insipid 1980s ballad band took over. (edit for your questions; Robert Lamm the keyboard player/ singer and the horn section are still with the band. The bass player lead singer here is still alive but not with the group, the drummer was asked to leave the band back in the 90s.) A better live version of Chicago is a group from Russia called Leonid and Friends, they play original Chicago rock. Good follow ups are Beginnings, Dialogue parts 1 and 2, I'm a Man and Saturday in the Park. If you want to do a nice 10 minute song the Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon features the song Make Me Smile.

It's kind of interesting (at least to me) as someone who was a teenager in the early seventies. By the mid-seventies Chicago was making mellow soft-rock, so it kind of went into the memory-hole just how bad-ass they were in their early years. Maybe they made more money with their soft rock, but their early stuff was much better.

Chicago's performance at Tanglewood in 1970 is nothing short of legendary. To actually see the master Terry Kath perform his guitar magic is spectacular. You really need to watch the entire concert.
The suite "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" is performed in its sequence as on the eponymous second album and is so beautiful to watch as well as to listen to live. Kath was INCREDIBLE!
Chicago now has at least 10 members in the band, but only three of the original members from their founding 1967 are in the band today. Robert Lamm (keyboards and vocals), Lee Loughnane (trumpet), and James Pankow (trombone) still tour with Chicago. Saxophone and woodwinds player Walt Parazaider retired a few years ago due to health issues. Peter Cetera (bass and vocals) quit and went solo in 1985. Terry Kath died from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot to the head in January 1978. Drummer Danny Seraphine was fired in 1990. Those were the seven founding members of Chicago.

This was the original lineup of the group Chicago which started in the 1960s. This here was 1970. They are actually still performing, but with a different lineup. They have 37 albums at this time (11/08/2023). That lead guitarist name was 'Terry Kath' in whom Jimi Hendrix spoke very highly. Sadly in 1978, Kath took a revolver to his head, thinking it was not loaded...and BANG! He was only 31 years old when he died. It was a REAL TRAGEDY! 25 or 6 to 4 meant 3:36 or 3:35am. It was about a musician trying to write a song, and he was up all night - and now it was 3:36 or 3:35 am. The man didn't say, "Take Care", but he said, "Terry Kath"!. The man who said it was the one on the keyboard, "Robert Lamm." Please also react to their song, "Old Days" - thank you.

That wasn’t really very unusual in the 60’s and 70’s, many bands would tune up when they came onstage. If you went to see The Who, there was a good chance that Keith Moon would wreck some part of his drum kit, and it would have to be fixed while the audience waited. Because Jimi Hendrix played so loud, he often blew out amplifiers, or he would break strings, and the audience would have to wait until problems were fixed. In the 70’s the sound systems got much better, and went to solid state (instead of tubes) so they were more durable. You also have huge crews that travel with bands to set everything up and take care of making sure guitars are in tune and so on.

Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Lenox MA, the name taken from Nathaniel Hawthornes "Tanglewood Tales". Hawthorne lived there in the 1850's in a small red cottage that is still there. Nearby is Austin Riggs Hospital, an old school sanitarium where James Taylor vacationed to recover from a breakdown and a massive heroin habit (Keith Richards was allegedly denied admission, he was too messed up). Also nearby is a B&B once owned by Alice Brock of "Alice's Restaurant" infamy. The acoustics at Tanglewood are impeccable so many bands did live recordings there about the same time. Check out Santana at TW, 1970, one of their best gigs ever. Other bands played there post-Woodstock, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Iron Butterfly, The Kinks. A wild time, never to be repeated

Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears brought horns into rock. Influenced so many. Great bands and musicians can pull off live and make it better. Genesis is a band that can do it. Phil Collins did it with 'In The Air Tonight' in Paris 2004. You have not reviewed this and if you have not seen it you MUST. Epic performance.

I love to bore people with details, but only when they ask for it, and as you did...3 of the originals you see here are still in the band today, Lee Loughnane (trumpet), James Pankow (Trombone, and mostly responsible for the brass arrangements over the years) and Robert Lamm (keyboards and vocals; he wrote this song and many more of their early hits - he also wrote (and sang) Saturday in the Park). The others are TERRY KATH (guitar, died in 1978), Peter Cetera (bass and vocals, left 1985 for fairly successful solo career, really surprised that Larry didn't know that to be honest!), Danny Seraphine (drums, fired in 1990 but reunited with the band briefly for their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016) and Walt Parazaider (sax, retired in 2017, diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2021). As for where to go next...too many options really, but Questions 67 and 68, Dialogue Parts I and II and Feelin' Stronger Every Day are 3 towards the top of the list; Introduction is lesser known, but also a good one to listen to early (written and sung by Terry and literally sets out what the band's about) - and yep, all of these suggestions have prominent horns!

If You Leave Me Now was #1 in every market it charted in July 1976, Hard To Say I'm Sorry in May 1982 did nearly as well with #1 in US and #4 in UK, are the two songs that stand out in memory (but chart data from Wiki). Their first single was Questions 67 And 68, like this song it was also written by original member Robert Lamm, and most of the albums are simply numbered in Roman numerals from 'Chicago III' onwards, with a few variations like 'Twenty 1', so I think there's an interesting thing about numbers going on here. Great band. There's a huge list of current and former members listed on the Wiki page, far too many to mention, but three of the founders - Peter Cetera, Terry Kath (d. 1978) and Robert Lamm are probably the best known names.

You hear people talk about a band being "tight", well these guys were SO tight that Terry could start strumming his axe perfectly timed to when the others would finish getting set up and come in with him right on time, in sync, not breaking rhythm with each other, gliding into the song as smoothly as an Olympic ski jumper sliding down the ramp to the gold medal flight.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jimi Hendrix told Chicago's publicist that Terry was a better guitar player than he was. They actually had plans to do shows together.
When Chicago made the studio album with this song on it, Cetera's jaw had been broken and he had to sing it through clenched teeth because his jaws were wired shut.

The real Chicago Transit Authority, the one that has been around since the 19th century, the one that is a department of the City of Chicago that regulates, oversees, maintains, et cetera, the commuter trains, ferries, and much other stuff, told the band to stop using their name or get their pants sued off.

25 or 6 to 4 in the morning was the time on the clock as several members of the band were sitting “Cross-legged” on the floor. Asking if they should take more Acid-LSD that they had taken a few hours earlier.

Not even close! It was written by Robert Lamm. He was up most of the night trying to finish this song and didn't what name to call it. He looked at the clock all blurry eyed and couldn't tell if it was 25 minutes to 4 or 26 minutes to 4am and that's how it got named.

On September 24, 1977 I saw Chicago at Soldier Field for their Saturday in the Park concert.
