- Come along as we make our way down to Texas to try what Texas Monthly Magazine has rated as the number one BBQ joint in Texas! This place isn't too impressive on the outside, but just like in life, it's what's on the inside that counts and the BBQ inside this place will change your life!

I made it a goal about a year and a half ago to got o Goldee's. It was 100% worth the trip from NC to TX to go here.
What a stud to stand in line for you. Boy looked hungry too 😂

Hahaha. That dudes a boss! Lol
Johnny and the crew are all so down to earth and put out great food 🔥 Love it when people put effort into their production keep it up man.
First of all, agree with you. The whole team at Goldees was top notch. You could tell, they’re not just good at what they do, they love it and they’re having fun! Second, really appreciate the kind words of encouragement. Means a lot! We’re a small channel, but we have big plans! 🙏🏻

I can't wait to finally try this place, been on my list for a minute! thanks for sharing!
Good stuff man! You won’t be disappointed!
It's worth the time to wait and the money to eat it. I cook my own BBQ at home, so I feel like I probably wouldn't need to go back a lot and keep eating it over and over, but that first time is magical man. They have the best bbq I've ever ordered from a restaurant ever. Insane.

Wow! This looks amazing!
Thanks! It really was. Appreciate the comment!!
Great video! Need to add Denver to your BBQ tour! BBQ looked so good! Hope to visit Goldees one day!
That’s a good idea! I didn’t know Denver was big into BBQ. Let me know if you have any suggestions!! Appreciate the comment!
I need this! Wow!
Yes you do!
Them ribs are the best here in Texas that’s for sure. I don’t like sauce most of the time but I love Goldlees tangy BBQ sauce. Thank God they’re only 20min from my house. Glad y’all loved it, those guys got something special going on over there.
I agree man! A couple of people have dogged their ribs a little bit, but man they were amazing! And we had just done a “BBQ tour” of the best ribs in Atlanta, Memphis, St. Louis and Kansas City. That’s doesn’t make me an expert or anything, but I can spot a good rib and these were delicious! That tangy sauce surprised me too! 20 mins away? I’m jealous!
You’ve not had pork ribs til you eat at La Barbecue…..@@letsdomoregood

You damm sure don’t know great ribs as their ribs are mediocre

Hahaha. That’s my bad! I was so distracted by the food. Lol But hey, by the time it was all said and done, we each ate enough for about three people! Appreciate the comment!
Going there soon! Can’t wait. How bad you think Fridays are with regards to the line and getting all the options
I’m jealous! I think Friday is your best bet, especially if the weather is a little less pleasant. No one wants to wait outside in the cold, so should be less people this time of year. I would try to get there 1-1.5hrs early just to be safe. If it’s not a holiday weekend or schools aren’t out, they should have everything. Enjoy it man! Let me know how the bread pudding is! They were out by the time we made it inside and that was with us getting there 2 hrs early. It was summer though, so more people. Cheers!
Y'all had that trey piled high! I would be lucky to eat all that in a week!
I’m not going to lie, I got a little carried away. Lol. It was amazing though! Appreciate the comment!
although the banana “vanilla custard” pudding is phenomenal
You’re spot on! My wife was so impressed she came home and tried to recreate it. It was delicious, but I’m trying to encourage her to keep practicing! Lol
There are SO many good BBQ places in Texas.... Buzzie's in Kerrville, Black's in Lockhart (they ship stuff very well), and many in other small towns. The tourist places (County Line, Salt Lick) were never my favorites when I lived in Texas- there's something about the smaller towns that I preferred.
Agree wholeheartedly! Something about the small town feel in Texas. World class BBQ all over the place. You’re hard pressed to find one BBQ place in many other states that stacks up with what almost any small town in Texas is throwing out. I like all the different flavors of smoked sausages as well. Good stuff! Never made it down to Kerrville, but I want to at some point. Really enjoyed Fredericksburg and their peaches though. A little touristy, but a neat little town and the peaches were good. I’ll have to add Buzzie’s to my list!
St. Louis, for sure, and I live in North Texas!
I went to Pappy’s in St Louis and those ribs are special man. Check out the video! Food Network rated them the #1 ribs in America. I was impressed! Appreciate the comment!

I live down the street on Dick Price Rd, not even half a mile away and see people lined up at 6-7 am on my way to work. Me and my fiancé have talked about trying it out.
6-7am! That’s crazy! You should try it one of these days. With just two people, you can eat there for way less than we did. I got a little carried away to be honest. Appreciate you checking it out and leaving a comment! Let me know how it goes!

That’s a good point! Straight into the to-go box! Lol
Can't believe you went to TX and ate the ribs first! C'mon maaan! Great video though.
Hahaha. I kind of envisioned it like climbing a mountain with brisket at the top. I like to work my way up! Lol To be honest, I never order pork ribs in Texas, but I’m glad I tried these. They were exceptional. Different than what you normally find across the south and delicious. But no denying it, brisket is king! Appreciate the comment!
Looks like they’re charging whatever the market will bear. I’d never pay those prices for BBQ, but if you can afford it, or justify it, Enjoy!
Yeah, agree completely. If I was only open three days a week and people were lined up outside my store hours before I opened, I would probably do the same thing. Being #1 won’t last forever, I guess you ride the wave while it last! Lol I certainly wouldn’t order that much food or pay that routinely, but when you’re on vacation you over pay for stuff all the time. Besides, I look at it like a unique experience I enjoyed with my family, just as much as eating amazing food, and who hasn’t overpaid for a unique experience and a cool memory with their family before? There doing what the diamond industry does . It's not all that
That place was Kenneth bbq before in the 80s it's between Kennedale and rendon tx I road my bike there to watch old man Kenneth smoking the meats. I lived in rendon since 1971.
That's cool, I didn't know that. How long was Kenneth BBQ shutdown before these guys opened up?
2 or 3 yes if I can remember. He lived in the house on the parking lot side
There is a place in everman tx about 4 miles from there called the hickory stick that's better than any bbq place I've ever been to.
@@fabuloussunshine5082 That’s awesome. I love little places like that. I’ll look it up!
How much would a tray with all there meats cost for one person though? Planning on making my trip from the UK to Texas in july for my BBQ bucket list pilgrimage.
That’s awesome! If you get a reasonable portion of each meat, meaning combined they would equal a decent sized meal, you could probably get out of there for $50. Not too bad at all! I went over board, but hey, you only live once! Check out some of the other top BBQ places in the Dallas/Ft Worth area and then head down to Austin and spend a few days eating BBQ in the hill country! I hope you have an awesome trip!
@letsdomoregood I got a few places I want to go as I'm doing a bbq food tour combined with my theme park enthusiast traveling as well by going to all the theme parks in texas at the same time. So goldees, terry blacks, snows, franklin and some other notable ones I'll be stopping at as well. But also gonna go Gus fried chicken as well. But don't know it it's good or just a tourist trap.
Number one 🤔. Depends on who judged it and taste buds. We at the cattleman's association always talk about who names who. Texas is the land of brisket cook offs.
Yeah, Texas is the top of the heap when it comes to brisket, that’s for sure! The number one in Texas rating comes from Texas Monthly magazine. They rate the top 50 bbq joints in Texas every 4 years and in their most recent ranking, they have Goldees as number one. They had Franklins as number one for 8 years which is what really put them on the map, so it’s a thing. As you say, it really does depend on the individual, but if you like Texas BBQ, you’ll love this place. That being said, don’t wait 3 hrs in line for it. Lol. Appreciate the comment!
I'm not too familiar with Texas BBQ. I'm from Florida, but I really want to try this. It's awesome they make their own bread from scratch, but why not garlic bread? Is a loaf of bread with BBQ Texas thing?
Yes, a lot of BBQ restaurants will give you some white bread, but this is the first BBQ place I’ve seen that’s making bread from scratch. Texas BBQ is legit! As soon as you get the chance, you need to check it out! Try the brisket and then giant beef ribs if you can find them. You will never look at BBQ the same! Appreciate the comment!
Yes, it is common to get lots of bread with your order, many people use the scraps of meat that fall off, or just want to make a little sandwich with their plates of meat. Plain white bread, not garlic. Most places usually don't make their own bread though, so that is not common.
From a lifelong Texan👍
I spent $1000 last time we were there. Best bbq ever
Oh wow! $1,000? That’s crazy! I believe it though. If you had 8-10 people, I could see getting to $1k pretty easily. Amazing food though! Appreciate the comment!
I judge a good BBQ joint by the smell, sides and if they have a damn good banana pudding or not. Love me some TX BBQ.
I hear ya! Their banana pudding was one of the best I’ve ever had. My wife couldn’t get over it. She came home and tried to recreate it! “You’re almost there honey! Very close but maybe just try making it one more time.” Lol Appreciate the comment!
Watching this video gives me the meat sweats.
Hahaha. You aren’t kidding! Lol It was worth it though!
Jesse James had a gun, Goldee's has a BBQ restaurant
Yes sir! And both knew how to use it!
Im around the corner from Goldees. Its in Kennedale, TX. But, for those prices ill just keep firing my pit up with hickory.
Hey, there’s nothing wrong with smoking at home with some hickory, that’s for sure! Since you’re so close, it would be worth it to run by there on a Friday morning when the line isn’t too long and try them. If you don’t go overboard, you can get out of there for about the cost of going to a decent restaurant and getting a steak. Of course, I’d rather eat good BBQ than a restaurant steak, but I don’t think you would be disappointed. Appreciate the comment! I didn’t know there were any Steelers’ fans in Dallas! Cheers!
@@letsdomoregood you're right. I have got to get over there. I've been a Steelers fan since 1975.

@letsdomoregood Texas smokes with post oak and pecan. West and South Texas use mesquite. I'll stick with my home BBQ at those prices.
Going there this weekend. What time did you guys get in line?
It was Sunday. We got in line at about 10am. Made it to the front at about 12:30, so around 2.5 hrs. The only thing they were out of was bread pudding, but we cut it close. They didn’t have beef ribs that day. If they did, I suspect we would have missed out. I would aim for closer to 9am. Maybe even earlier if it’s a Saturday. They have camp chairs you can use and everyone is in a pretty friendly mood, so it isn’t bad. Enjoy man! Let me know how it goes.

40$ a pound for the brisket is to steep 😢 for the Kid
He bro, I hear you! Lol Appreciate the comment!
also from Atlanta area. Never made it to Texas for any of these famous places - Does Fox Bros even compare?
Honestly, not really. I like Fox Bros but in Texas it would be run of the mill BBQ. They would score points for things like their fried pork ribs, but their brisket wouldn’t stand up to you local average BBQ place. It’s like brisket is something they serve, but in Texas brisket is who they (local BBQ joints) are, if that makes sense. The level of focus, the detail, the wood, the passion, the shared knowledge in the local BBQ community and the years of experience of all the folks in the restaurant, just puts Texas on another level. Great question!
Having a little wine will taste better
Goldies use to be number 1 now it is Briscuits in Austin

NO.(i know i'll get crucified) Have you tried Cattleack BBQ in dallas?, in my opinion they have better brisket and they sell Beef Ribs which Goldee's no longer do. Desserts also rock..
I haven’t tried Cattleack, but I’m game! Yeah, I was disappointed that there wasn’t beef ribs. If Cattleack BBQ serves beef rib regularly, that’s reason enough to try them right there. Lol I’ve heard they’re really good. Appreciate the insight man!

We had a group of 4 and our total cost was about $157 after we ordered a little bit of everything.

How many ate for $422? I think i see 3? That would be the same price as a good steak place.
My brother-in-law, my wife and I and then my 12 yo daughter and niece. So 5 total, but just 3 adults. Yes, you’re right, it’s about the price of a good steak restaurant which is amazing to me! BBQ used to be about taking the cheaper cuts, making them delicious and eating cheap, but the pit masters have made BBQ so good that now many people prefer top tier BBQ over high end steak and the price shows! This food was delicious though. Appreciate the comment!
Yea but way more food and probably better tasting too
Goldee's BBQ, #1 BBQ in Texas for those who haven't been to central Texas
Haha. That's Texas Monthly magazine's rating, not mine! They included all the guys in central Texas as well. Several of them were top 5 or top 10. That being said, I can't argue with you. Central Texas has more world class BBQ joints per capita than anywhere else in the world. You could do a BBQ tour for months and never go more than 100 miles from Austin! Kind of sounds like the early stages of a plan. lol Appreciate the comment!
@@letsdomoregood I have been privileged to live in CT my whole life. Within a 50 mile radius of Austin is, IMO the center of the universe BBQ wise. In an early part of my life, the firm I worked for did all the technical prep to bring Texas Monthly to print. We had early access to all their images and text galleys and would critique their choices every year. There was a definite political/economic "keep the natives pacified" aspect to the BBQ evaluations.
@@jamesoliver6625 Oh wow! I hate to hear that, but not surprised. That’s good to know. Appreciate you sharing. I wholeheartedly agree with your take on CT BBQ! There’s more world class BBQ per capita within 50 miles of Austin than anywhere else in the world! Shot, forget per capita, there’s just more there period. Lol
Well, they say they’re #1 now and I know you have to pay for quality and everything is expensive now, but DAMN! $422?!! I know you got a lot of food too, but still, that’s the single most expensive BBQ order I’ve seen for just 2 or 3 people. I’d buy some of it! Ha Ha! Just can’t afford to slap down 400 bucks on lunch right now. Hey! Go For It!
Yes, eating top tier BBQ is more than eating steak these days. Lol. To be honest, you can eat there for a lot less. I wanted to try everything so I ordered everything and then I always end up ordering “to much” if there is such a thing. Hey, after you’ve driven that far and waited that long, I don’t want to be wishing I had ordered a little bit more brisket or pork belly! For one person, eating like a normal human being, you can get out of there for $50. Still a splurge, but definitely more palatable than $400! Appreciate the comment my friend!
High dollar turd
It not all that.if anybody paid a lot. it was someone from the restaurant paying Texas monthly
@martycaldwell7197 I heard from a guy that used to work at Texas Monthly and he said the rankings can be a little political. That’s unfortunate…
$422 😂 there’s no way I’d pay that much for a tray of BBQ
Yeah, it surprised me if I’m being honest. To be fair, I did order a lot of food, realistically probably enough for 8 people (we had 3 adults and two children), but still the most I’ve ever spent at a restaurant for just a lunch out. The food was delicious though!
Sounds then like it’s not the place for you
You need to let your “mans “ grab what he wants
He was just trying to wait while I tried each item on camera. My wife noticed he was waiting (that’s her little brother) and mentioned it. Believe me, it was all you can eat and he took the leftovers home for later. I’ll try to be more aware and conscientious next time. Appreciate the comment!
Is this a normal price for a bbq place?
No, this is a little high to be honest, but I did order a lot of food. Their brisket was $36 a pound. I bought 3 lbs so that’s over $100 just on brisket. Throw on some ribs, pork belly and everything else, it adds up quick! So really the total is a combo of a premium price plus the quantity I ordered. It was amazing though. Appreciate the comment!
No, they are high because of all the demand being named #1in Texas. Brisket averages about $28 a pound now at most places here in Texas, still very expensive, but if you want the best, it is going to cost you. They are taking advantage of people here though due to their newfound publicity, it won't last. Plenty of great BBQ here in Texas.

why the hell is that $400 it's not a TON of food

Dont do beef ribs at Salt Lick. They tasted like kerosene. I told them and they said they were sorry. They were un edible. Never again...
Oh wow! That’s not cool. They’re were probably $25-$30 per pound too! That happened to me one time at another place. I think it was the wood they were using. Maybe mesquite? It could have just been a bad batch of wood, but it tasted like kerosene. I know mesquite can be an intense flavor and after 15-17 hrs, it had penetrated pretty deep. I didn’t care for it. It could have been another wood, I should have asked, but whatever it was, I was forcing myself to eat it just so I didn’t waste my money. No bueno!
$422 that’s a joke.
Yeah, I think it just comes down to supply and demand. I need to make a trip up into the Carolina’s to try some of their BBQ. Last time I had Carolina BBQ, I was just a kid and I really wasn’t paying attention. You’re spot on with Tx BBQ, hands down #1!
@@letsdomoregood Their claim to fame is whole hog which they chop into shreds and pour their gross vinegar sauce into it. It’s their signature item. Avoid that and you’re good. The rest isn’t bad. I say they’re the worst because I judge TX BBQ by its brisket. I judge NC by their signature
@@NotaUserIam I think that’s fair, number one item vs number one item. Growing up mostly in the south, I thought BBQ was pork until I went to Texas. My girlfriend’s family (now wife) took me to a BBQ place and I had brisket for the first time. It blew my mind! The stuff I’d been eating across the south just couldn’t stand up against it. Not that it was bad, I still like southern pork BBQ, but brisket done right in Texas is just another level.
o ok tubby
They aren't the same since they didn't offer their pitmaster partner. She's got her own bbq place now.
Interesting. I remember seeing her in a couple of UA-cam videos. I didn’t know she left. Hope she’s doing well. Thanks for sharing!
I saw her in a documentary saying she was going to leave and start her own gig
@@DR-wp6gy I hope she’s doing well. Do you know the name of her restaurant? I wouldn’t mind trying it!
Pretty sure Johnny taught her how to cook bbq. Js
@@jmf420 Good point
450$ Jesus Christ all mighty
Yes, he is the almighty! And BBQ can get expensive! Lol Appreciate the comment!
Number 1 in Texas is a big claim.
Yes it is, especially since Texas is like the pinnacle of BBQ (in my opinion)! The #1 ranking comes from Texas Monthly magazine, which is basically the standard for BBQ rankings in Texas. They’re the ones that ranked Franklin’s number one several years ago and propelled them to the forefront of the BBQ world! Check out their list, there’s some good stuff on there. Appreciate the comment my friend!
@@letsdomoregood Got to try Truth BBQ in Houston about a month ago. They're #3 in Texas. Son. Let me tell you. When I say minds were blown that day, believe me. I expected the brisket to be other-worldly and it did not disappoint. What I didn't expect were their ribs to be on that same level. And the beans...kind of Tex-Mex style pinto's in a thin juice, nice cilantro flavor, just delicious. Highly recommend if you're in the area.
We went for lunch on a Friday. Got in line for 10:30 and was like 10th in line.
@@allieandbo That’s awesome! Truth is on my list! We used to live in Brenham where the original Truth is. It’s just a shack. They opened it right after we moved away and then it started popping up on the BBQ scene. We just missed it! I will make it a priority next time we’re in Houston. I hear it’s unbelievable. Thanks for sharing! It’s hard for people that have never eaten BBQ in Texas to truly understand the brisket and beef rib obsession. Lol
@@letsdomoregood re: Texas BBQ, it's the gold standard to me. I cater for a hobby and am a "BBQ freak" to use my wife's words, and I do Central Texas-style bbq. I thought my stuff was really good until I ate at Truth...lol.
After we left Truth I said, today I learned that I still have a lot to learn about BBQ.
@@allieandbo Haha. That’s cool man. Hey, in a way it’s good to know that there is still more to learn and achieve in the art and science of BBQ! Appreciate the comment my friend.
Good food but way overpriced.
It really is amazing when you think about it. BBQ used to be the cheaper cuts and a cheap meal. Now days, it can easily cost more to eat at the top BBQ joints than a nice steakhouse! Appreciate the comment!
I would disagree, exstensive labor hours, food cost thru the roof, rent, the list goes on and on. All that is not profit
@@smokeking85 Good points all!
@@smokeking85 Wood very cheap rap and sit check every couple hrs and with thermometers now days it's even easier,Trust me 6 ribs half a chicken some kielbasa and some baked beans and coleslaw isn't worth 150.00 plus to me ,labor isn't that extensive to be 15 times the food and woods or charcoals value.
@@dmac7403 Definitely not sit and check my man you get a real offset and you will know that’s not true, thermometers are a guide they definitely don’t create good food just doneness. To each its own on pricing just don’t support them it won’t stop business for them
nah . the ribs look dry
Actually they weren’t. I was surprised by how good they were. This was after a week of eating ribs in Atlanta, Memphis, St. Louis and Kansas City. These ribs were second only to the ones in St Louis in my opinion, although only slightly! They were more savory and not sweet like most of the pork ribs you get across the south. Surprisingly delicious! Appreciate the comment!
$422 for a tray of bbq? GTFO!!
Yes, a large tray, but yes. Not cheap, but it was delicious. Appreciate the comment!
rip off, about 200 per person
Probably closer to $100 per person, but yeah not cheap at all. My wife, daughter and niece (young kids) were with me off camera. I ordered a lot of food, just to be fair, but it caught me by surprise how expensive it was. Appreciate the comment!
You got hosed. Lol. $422 for bbq for 4?? Hahahah Tourists and hipsters keep these overpriced Que loins in business.
Hey, it happens! Lol
Being a 50 yr vet in the Texas bbq game,i can say that Goldees is not close to the best bbq. Brisket and pork belly are solid, but ribs sausage turkey all average to slightly below. You would probably lose your minds in the greater Austin area alone there are 5 places off the top of my head much better than Goldees.. Whatever that pudding is its not banana. This place is just media hyped tbh..
Thanks for weighing in! Sounds like you’ve been doing Texas BBQ longer than I’ve been alive. I’m happy to take suggestions from my BBQ elders! Let me know which ones you would recommend. Appreciate the comment!
@@letsdomoregood Franklin,Snows,Blacks,Kreutz Market,Interstellar is newer but solid as well. Stay away from salt lick, looks pretty but it it's not good Texas bbq.
@@Gonzo1968 Sounds good to me! Appreciate it my friend!
Have you even eaten at Goldees? I’ve been to all those places and Goldees is easily right there with all of them.
@@Fazman81 Yes waste of almost 4 hrs..
So OVERRATED….. I’ve eaten at every bbq place in Texas and this is DEFINITELY NOT #1…. A total joke…..
Yeah, just going off of the Texas Monthly magazine rankings. That being said, I did have a guy that used to work at Texas Monthly tell me that the rankings can be a little political, so who knows. What would you put in front of Goldees?
I would put Franklins and La Barbecue in Austin ahead for sure and by a lot. I’d probably also put Snows in Lexington ahead. Franklins and La Barbecue Are the 2 best all around. La Barbecues pork ribs are OFF THE CHAIN. The best sausage in Texas is at Southside Market in Elgin hands down. Franklins barely nudges out La Barbecue for best brisket. It’s funny cause I had just been to Austin 2 weeks ago and brought back 6 lbs or so of La Barbecue, pork ribs and brisket for 2 friends. They then went last week and brought me Goldees. We ALL AGREED Goldees is nowhere close to La Barbecue. I also have it on good authority that Burnt Bean Company in Seguin is towards the top of the list. @@letsdomoregood
I was here last summer and waited 2 hrs.,and it was not worth it. “ Way overpriced “, and the only thing was awesome was the brisket, ribs tasted like they were baked in an oven, sausage was just ok,sides sucked pork belly was mediocre. Will never go back, and the idiot from Texas Monthly Magazine , had to be bought off,as overall,I’d give this place a 6,out of a 10. I judge BBQ contest for years, and this place is “ Way overpriced and overrated!!!!!! I’ll never come back.
Oh man, I’m sorry to hear that! I agree, the brisket was great. Yeah, I don’t know how Texas Monthly does their ratings. They said they had multiples members of their staff go over a period of time. That being said, I heard for someone that used to work there that it can be a little political. Not sure what he meant by that other than to say it’s not a perfect meritocracy. Appreciate the comment! What is your number 1?
Completely overrated
What a rip off
Yeah, I think it just comes down to supply and demand. If you're only open 3 days per week and there are lines of people waiting hours before you open the doors, I guess you can charge just about whatever you want. Of course being rated #1 in the state by Texas Monthly magazine doesn't hurt either. lol Appreciate the comment!
IT'S NOT #1 YOUR LUCKY IF IT IS IN THE TOP 5.
I was just going by Texas Monthly Magazine’s rating! They rated it #1. 🤷♂️ Who’s #1 in your book? I want to try all of the top tier ones at some point. Appreciate the comment!
Wow so expensive. Low income ppl like myself would never be able to eat here its unfortunate they charge so much for this stuff
Yeah, it’s supply and demand, only open 3 days per week and people are lined up around the building to get some. I think the cool part is, the group of friends that started the restaurant were all basically low income 4 years ago. It’s amazing the success they’ve been able to string together with their hard work and tenacity! I wish you were there with us my friend, I would have loved to share with you! Nothing makes me happier than sharing great food, with new friends! Take care and God bless!
