Everyone tried to count JSU out but again just because they're smaller this year doesn't mean their less powerful! Clearly JSU did win and from the tallies and votes it shows

JSU just had a better song selection, and with that being said, JSU took the W imo! Nothing more nothing less. I commend JSU for having the better song selection!

Sat front and center between SU & JSU, fully expected SU to dominate...it did not happen. JSU was without question the better band...and that's from a huge SU supporter. I'm sorry man, the Juke took the L on this one.
K. Ramon damn really.. Did JSU just sound just well balanced throughout the battle. Im.a SU fan to and SU always have at least two or three songs that's in everyone mind that sticks out from the rest but I didn't get it from this battle
Immanuel Harris I would say "The Weekend" by Sza was their song of the night, but yes, JSU had an excellent sound that was much more powerful than I think anyone expected. They were solid and strong all night long. I have to give credit when it is due...JSU took the W. This is coming from I guy who came from Florida mainly to see SU.

K. Ramon I don't know. I will say JSU held their own. I feel SU beat everybody with arrangements. SU had way better arrangements and trumpets killed. They def killed dega with power and arrangements after they back doored them
D Sr Excellent arrangements as always, but very questionable execution on multiple songs. JSU was solid on every song all night long.
Alcorn came to play, Jackson came to dominate, Southern came to be loud, Talladega came just to watch 😂😂😂😂

Gonna give JSU the nod on this one. Much better song selection. Not sure what SU was going for in this battle, but I felt the song selection was better at the Alcorn game. They had a clear advantage in instrumentation and sound potential but they wasted it playing the typical half note blast open fifth leaps that have become common place with all bands. I would have liked to hear them distinguish themselves more with a mix of playing more "Music"...which is what they normally do. Even there "Crown Jewel" song of the night was lack luster. It was long...but it was monotonous and didn't sway the outcome of the battle. Alcorn was a solid third. Talladega was absolutely terrible. There were at least three sounds that they played songs that clearly weren't memorized very well. Miles College would have been a much better 4th band.
Chemist8897 Agreed on SU's "Crown Jewel" song. Baritones could not sustain their power throughout that entire song, which I have never seen happen with Southern Baritones. You can tell they were out of gas..

Very good event here. The Sonic Boom seems to have been the bull of the Bunch. They definitely owned that place. Great showing by all. AEA
Really confused by Southern's song selection. For all the hype given to the event, I thought this was the biggest letdown. For a band known for having a pretty deep book, I just find myself confused by 'Power', 'Still Fly', among others.
malcom1985 , They had plenty of other songs in their book that would have just obliterated this battle. Song selection is key. And it takes the crowd out of the battle because they do not know or can't understand what is being played.
malcom1985, but on another note, this technically is SU first battle of the year. They have the rest of the conference now from here on. So maybe they were being reserved for the rest of the season. Now they face everyone else, Aamu, JSU, Also, Pvu, Txsu, Mvsu, Gsu.
Honestly I'm disappointed in SU. I came there to see them handle business and they we're half ass the whole night. They didn't even play Drug Lord Couture. JSU came in and handled business and were professional.

Boombox Classic should be a great one this year.
Coming from someone who don't have a dog in this fight...I think this was a good quality battle between two bands who have excellent leadership (JSU & SU)....I know JSU and SU fans gonna support their bands so let's not let Talladega and Alcorn distract us from October 21st @ 7pm we can see who the clear uncut balanced band will be...No Police cutting the show short please (viewers would like to hear music)
It is my view that all the participating bands did a great job however there were a few bands better than others and one better than them all the one that was better than them all was Southern University.

It is sad what rap tunes have done to marching band arrangements!! Maybe I'm just getting old, but there is no meat or dynamics, just loud noise!! I'm so tired of hearing mellophones and blaring baritones!!

Jsu was great and had a good song selection in this battle su had better sound quality that gave them the edge in this battle but I think su didn't open there song book up enough because of the boombox classic oct.21 so I think it's a tie between those two bands
Its about how well the sounds come together. This is to include percussion, that adds overall funk and groove. Something that makes you want to sing and dance. Well written and executed arrangements for the instrumentation.

This battle was honestly SU vs JSU.. I honestly can't say who won because they both was cranking. SU had the arrangements and song selections..JSU had the Power. IMO it was a tie.
I still say MILES should have been up in here either as a 5th band or replacing dega

Call me ol skool, but these arrangements from bands nowadays are too thin and they dont have same full sound like Lindsay Sargent, Lawrence Jackson and Carnell Knighton... I think these arrangers are too focused on on volume rather than tone...

A lot of these times that are being played are rap tunes that really have no musicality to it. So a lot of the parts are words verses instruments. So it is normally all power. These kids are not familiar with songs that showed true musicianship. Everything is digital now.

I marched at MBC from 2000-2003. We didnt have the best arrangements but the concepts were on point... These arrangements are getting to high in the register and its taking the resonance away from the sound... The tubas are sounding kinda high schoolish taking everything up... I faced BCC, NSU, FAMU, TSU and them boys didnt play when it came to tone and resonance...

As far as what I heard from these few weeks now CORN AND DEGA got waxed by MILES so I think they can contend with the best of them. Not to say they'll win but they will give SU and JSU something to remember them by.

It was a battle between SU & JSU with Alcorn as a special guest. TC was the joke of the entire night lol everyone clowned them still not sure why they came. But in person SU had the better sound, JSU was a close second.

I think SU isn't taking this battle seriously considering that DEGA,CORN AND JSU got wrecked by SU in the past challenges over the years. Its that one element that makes SU such a better band and that's arrangements with musical harmonic balance played beautifully loud. There are times they have plenty of fuck up moments every now and then but their sound is consistent. Hats off to the directors and arrangers of music on an outstanding program that makes other programs want to be the next challenge and up their game.
