There's a lot of talk on the semantics of music but wasn't this event titled CRANK FEST. I appreciate musicality and won't trivialize either band. However, I assumed this event was held to entertain and engage the audience, while annihilating the opposition. To critique an arrangement on lack of complexity is futile because the original tunes origins are basic. Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" is not complex but is yet a classical standard. When you have to devalue to prove superiority therein lies weakness. I laude both bands but for song selection and entertainment value I'm favoring Southern. Continued success to the Sonic Boom and Human Jukebox; two music programs overdue a Sudler Trophy (I won't start on how I feel about that slight).
The Juke is a beast! JSU got slayed! Like Jordan and Ali, the Juke has proven they are the undisputed truth, (GOAT) greatest of all time! That was a crime scene out there, somebody bring out the mop and bucket to clean the blood off the floor, cause JSU just got murdered!
By the way, I guess the name of the song is human jukebox, su plays it midday through the 40 minute mark. It goes hard!!! Jsu's father stretch your hands is still the hardest thing out right now though imo

Good battle. Both bands have flaws, jsu's whip appeal is too short, but it's no different than su taking all those tuba breaks with a mediocre tuba section (and that's being nice). To me battles like this are a waste of time unless the bands are doing so to raise money which I'm sure is the case. I will be at the game and I'm looking forward to both bands putting on a show! This a TIE! End of Story. After looking at all the videos of this BOMB botb, they were both hitting. FSMH battle, JSU won by a narrow margin, mainly because the Boom played the whole song. But I feel both bands trying to hold off till next Saturday, SU more so playing only 4-5 new songs. But I'm tellin' ya, come next weekend both of these MONSTERS are gonna be splittin' SO MANY WIGS and RIPPING SO MANY BLEACHERS out of Veterans Memorial on the 15th, not only are the Sonic Boom and the Jukebox gonna possibly shut it down for the year, they probably gonna end up in prison for the MASS GENOCIDE of Jackson, Mississippi!!!

I really want SU to get rid of those tubas they have (that white fiberglass bottom does not hold or carry a good strong tuba sound) and JSU needs to stop trying to out blow their opponent it's really affecting their sound and timing (hanging over). Shout out to both bands for being the best in their conference.
Su should also avoid playing songs with a trombone solo (unless it's half or whole notes) when they face jsu because jsu's trombones will embarrass them. And I thought jsu's btones would match up equally with SU's as far as volume is concerned but I was wrong, good god!!
I've had the privilege to play for both of these marching bands su in 95 and jsu in 97and 98 that being said both bands did well but su won this one big time it is what it is so you arrangements is on point and well excuted Jackson state on 95% of there songs was mushy loud and tonality was just not clear and last but not least su was in complete control of this battle when they open up with tourist jsu didn't have no answer for that at all so jsu fans take the L you still have Oct.15

And the WINNER is..... I enjoyed this CFBOTB '16.. Very professional performances on both bands parts.. Now on to the meat & potatoes (honest critique from a REAL band fan).. -JSU's arrangements are square to say the least, lacking a lot of melodic parts that give a lot of the songs a real flow.. They have Power BUT not where it needs be in my opinion.. Trumpets aren't absent but they are really hard to find most times & they hang on to notes WAY too long (that's not going to make us hear you more).. Then I think they bunch tightly together to give the illusion of a deeper sound but the verdict's still out on that.. Then there was SU.. They had a HUGE hiccup between 30:00 - 31:00, the average band WOULD NOT have been able to recover from this, in fact what redeemed them was turning their horns on JSU to close out the song & trying to literally blow them out of the stadium, hats off on the come back.. It was the director's mishap but the band has to take that lick as a unit, sorry.. JSU tried to turn on SU at 47:50 but the director again screwed up, had half the band turned the other half straight ahead, drum majors running like kids behind the ice cream truck to scramble to the side of the band, very sloppy guys.. All considered solid performance by both but closer to a more perfect combination of Power, melody, balance of horns & arrangements on the part of SU.. And the WINNER is.........aaaaaaaaaSU, SSSSSSU (you know the rest)!! :-)

Southern executed their music better than Jackson. both had hiccups one not as bad as the other. Southern music and arrangements fits them just like Jackson arrangements fits them. in my personal opinion Jackson arrangements are too country for me and they play a lot of whole notes by days my opinion. not to mention there trumpets where sliding and missing notes in the midst the whole battle. when it comes down to doing selection both bands where smart cause they see each other 3 more times before the season ends and just maybe Jackson will come and march for Mardi Gras. personally I feel Southern executed better than Jackson.

honestly i just cant see Nathan Haymer mis-conducting HIS OWN BAND. pity points goes to JSU after that. its not like the song was just passed out. +Timothy Miles Jsu fans do it also. I'm ocean of soul so I love and hate both bands. in all honesty it was a what and what battle, both bands had strong and weak points. Southern executed their music better than Jackson. both had hiccups one not as bad as the other. Southern music and arrangements fits them just like Jackson arrangements fits them. in my personal opinion Jackson arrangements are too country for me and they play a lot of whole notes by days my opinion. not to mention there trumpets where sliding and missing notes in the midst the whole battle. when it comes down to doing selection both bands where smart cause they see each other 3 more times before the season ends and just maybe Jackson will come and march for Mardi Gras. personally I feel Southern executed better than Jackson.

And for the trumpets, they were on point and not messing up and missing notes like the Jukes did. As far as arrangements I agree with u on a few things, SU exicuted like SU always does, same for the Boom, they executed like the Boom. Yes they both had a rough patch and got passed them. But JSU was hitting them with new songs all night and SU was going back to songs from past seasons. So I give the slightest edge to the Boom. But I think BOTH bands are holding back for later in the season meetings.
