  • This is a video that gives the basics and background of boiler stoves. For some they're a necessity, for others they're a smart focal point and back up, and for those of us really keen on looking after the planet: There is no other heating that can be carbon neutrally run, all from your own back and your back garden.
    If you have any questions then please drop them in the comments and either us or other members of the stove community will do our best to help!

    I installed 2 multifuel boiler stoves. One in our 3 bed stone detached house in Normandy, France in 2008 to replace oil heating. Bought a Villager AHI for £780 then in the UK and took 2 days to re-plumb in 28mm copper, gravity heat leak rads and open vented header tank. It heated 13 radiators with total output of 14kw. Most were double. Pipe thermostat to operate pump to rads.
    Used 25 cubic metres of logs over 7 months of just heating the radiators. Hot water by electric. Paid 15 to 30 euros a cubic metre delivered, cut to our size and seasoned. Heating cost around 700 euro a winter. House really warm. Heat up time to get rads warm to hot around an hour. Our favourite villager.
    Moved to County Kerry and renovated a 2 bed 1950's bungalow. Heated that with a Villager Berkley integral boiler stove. Ran 5 rads, 4 double and hot water. Very well insulated and heated the property well. Not as good as staying in as the AHI, but place warm in morning anyway. Burnt wood and smokeless coal.
    Also bought a Parkray 88 inset boiler stove for a cottage a few years later in Kerry and for the purchase price of £50 very nice. My current stove is a Woodwarm fireview 4.5kw on my narrowboat. Gravity heats 2 rads and leagues better in quality and controllability of the villager.

    I have one, an esse, had gas taken out, when the gas fitter came to remove the meter he couldn't understand what I'd done, I explained you make a fire and it heats the water.

    By far the most important detail to get right is the heat balance of the system.
    Where a typical boiler stove will offer a kw output rating to the room and another to water. These are maximum values but are key to optimising the installation. Where a stove is selected it's imperative to size the hest output to the room appropriately.
    I have heated houses with boiler stoves, more than one in some cases and found the biggest error in some installations is ending up with far too much heat to the room the stove is in because it's being run hard to get the rest of the house warm with radiators.
    Get it right though and the results are superb, and very practical if you're prepared to live that lifestyle. Having done it for decades now I have no intenton of going back to reliance on third parties and energy companies for my heating when I have end to end control of it now.

    Finally a video on boiler stoves, thanks! I have one that cut my methane bill to zero. I live on the mountain in Italy and produce firewood by myself. The stove heats a 600l insulated boiler (1000 would have been better) and the boiler controls the radiators and the hot water for the bathrooms and kitchen. Couldn't be happier

    I've got an esse stove, I've also fitted an old school back boiler in my open fire, thermoswitch to turn pump on, so that's 2 heat sources and 2 boilers, heats a very large house, if I get free wood (!) it's totally free heating, plus a great open fire to look at, stove is esse, s version of an aga, so you've got 2 ovens, hotplate, works well, no gas on at all and if you keep electric low your living fairly cheaply, you just need a chain saw!

    When I looked into this a few years ago I struggled to find a plumber willing to take this work on and the one that did quoted a stupendously high figure. Others I know have also had difficulty finding the trades to install/modify the plumbing😢

      If you have a water tank in the loft, your system is already suitable and requires very little work to incorporate the stove into it.
      Ironically, many people had those systems removed in place of a combi boiler and now want to go back. Reversing that scenario again will be a lot more expensive.

    As a kids, our hot water came from our stove, it was a big tank in the laundry( shared a wall with the kitchen)
    The water boiled in the tank occasionally! It was hard work keeping up the fuel keeping it dry and not 100% ideal in Australian summers!
    Our water pressure can from a high tank ( gravity) and we had a vile composting toilet ( inside)
    That toilet didn’t last long, lucky Dad was a plumber.

    Had a Coalbrookdale Severn with back boiler many years ago, worked in the mines and got free coke. It was wonderful, but in summer, the cylinder used an immersion heater. Ours fed 9 radiators comfortably as well as providing ample hot water. Only issue was if the radiator pump was off, the heat in the storage cylinder got so great, it vented off hot water to an overflow tank in the loft. Got a simple wood stove now to back up the gas boiler, much easier to control heat throughout the house.😊

      Sounds awesome. I know what you have now is simpler, but the Severn and it’s boiler (to me) is still so much more exciting 😆

    To run a decent size house it's like 3 tons of wood over winter, not a builders bag either, but actually 3 ton weight, I get anthracite so it stays in 24/7 and logs as well

    • @TheTortoise

      This is often a trickier fix, as Combi boilers work off a pressurised system. If you look around you might find things like:
      Stratford Eco-boiler 12 wood (must be the wood version)
      Or
      Evolution 26 boiler
      These are 2 boiler stoves that are approved to connect to pressurised systems. I’m not sure of any others and even these are sadly not made anymore. But if you find one the Stratford is particularly well suited to your “back up” requirement.

    Ruff ho ho, but works and wonderous. Direct heat is were it's at along with a stove that can retain heat for 12 to 24 hrs along with a oven is what we need in rural locations paired with solar. Nice channel, thanks.

    I have a 20KW Woodwarm Fireview with a back boiler. This is integrated into my heat system. When up to temperature a themostatic valve opens behind the boiler, activates a separate water pump and turns off the main oil boiler and pump. I have lived with this system for 12 years. It’s reasonably efficient in terms of cost. The downside is that it is difficult to control the temperature of the water within the system. This has led to two boilers being written off due to corrosion within the heat manifolds along with several radiators also being written off. All as a result of acidic build up within the system due to a lack of temperature control. This cannot be mitigated to the addition anti corrosive additives in the system. After recently replacing another Grant oil fed boiler I finally disconnected my log burner from the heating system, drained the back boiler and now use the log burner as a local heat source. The result is that my burner now produces 20KW i stead of 4kw which - as you can imagine - produces a huge amount more heat. Enough to heat the entire ground floor. The resultant increase in oil consumed is therefore far less than I expected. In addition, I can use my log burner as a heat and cooking source during power outages - something that I could not do previously. Having lived with both set ups I would never utilise a back boiler heat source system again unless it was a completely separate system

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  4 місяці тому

      This is a very strange system, and in all the years I’ve worked with boilers I’ve never encountered this acidic problem. I’m a little confused how temperature could have created acid at all???
      Obviously a lack of rust inhibitor can cause problems, but minus that I’ve known tons of systems with multiple heat sources. Most commonly now people will have a twin coil cylinder connected to a stove, solar and then an immersion probe, but that’s obviously still different to yours.

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  4 місяці тому

      You can add a flue boiler to basically all their stoves, but it is very little. These often get used in tiny spaces like boats etc.

    My 1st house had a back boiler. But it was a pain. Boiler stove only good for a family situation in my humble opinion.
    Not forgetting the expense to have one fitted.

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  4 місяці тому +1

      Because of the poor infrastructure for installation almost every boiler stove I encounter is fitted without adhering to modern regs. This makes it relatively cheap to do, but obviously isn’t what should officially be done.

    • @edwardplant8742
      @edwardplant8742 4 місяці тому +2

      Depends what the combi boiler is feeding, if it's supplying a vented hot water cylinder then yes, if it's a pressurised system then not without modification to the plumbing

    The old olymberyl aidan boiler stove was a great bit of kit but i doubt it would hit todays standards. Always thought the thing holding back boiler stoves was getting a decent plumber to take on and understand the job. The hetas courses were woeful and just a money making machine for them.

    I am looking for, without success, a replacement for an old Rayburn. I want a wood burning range cooker that will also run my central heating. I have installed a new wood burner in the lounge and am so impressed with how little wood it uses compared to my old one and would like a modern range cooker. Any suggestions?

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  3 місяці тому

      Sadly you won’t find one. You may find old things, but range cookers with boilers are now very rare and even the ones that do exist cannot run a whole system. Esse make one, but as I say, it’s fairly small in terms of output to water.

      It’s such a shame, I’ve got a supply of ash wood to last me for years. I have a pellet stove that after the first few years is a nightmare - too many moving parts that go wrong one after the other, very expensive repairs, buying in pellets and reliant on electricity to run

    Lived for the past seven decades with a solid fuel Rayburn cooker. It keeps my large kitchen toasty warm and does all my hot water needs and runs up to six radiators if required. Bugger paying standing charges to utility companies and their rip off price per unit on top.
