Roaring MP15s on the Union Railroad

- Back in July, I made a quick visit to the Union Railroad of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This unique shortline uses mostly MP15DC locomotives to haul iron ore and other steel products to and from the various steel mills on Pittsburgh’s East Side. In this video, you will see a few of the evening trains that operate around the Edgar Thomson steel mill in Braddock. We will chase the loaded ore train south from North Bessemer, and then catch a caboose hop and a few nighttime trains around the mill!

"How many MP15s do you need to lash up?"
"Yes!"
I love the way you edit your videos. Yes, we all like watching trains, but the main portion of interest for 98% of us is the locomotives, and you do a great job with that. You show us the engines and about the first half-dozen cars. Then, we move on to the next scene. Perfect. Great video. Loved the shot of the elevated track between the buildings. It screams, INDUSTRY! Thanks so much.
Thank you! I’d bore myself to death if I had to wait for the full train going that slow!
Smokes coming threw the keyboard!! Awesome!! 👍👍👍🇨🇦
Wow, that area around the Edgar Thomson Steel Works seems quite frequented to me! Full of rail track-spaghetties to everywhere and can hearing horn sounds from every angles. As far as i know, the NS main line also passes through there beneath the spot from where you caught these sights. Awesome cozy place!
Great shot
Union sure is squeezing every penny out of those MP15’s for sure. Excellent filming Sam!
Fantastic video. That opening shot coming out of North Bessemer Tunnel is absolutely amazing.
Thank you! It was a cool experience seeing all that smoke, although it made it a little hard to breathe.
6:30 EYY! a caboose! Also never seen 5 of those switch yard engines hauling together. It reminds me of model railroading layout operations "Why do you have 3 switcher engines with a caboose Dan?" "I AM THE MASTER OF MY DOMAIN!"
The crew probably went on duty across the river at Duquesne Yard and ran lite over to the Edgar Thompson Works. You later see this same roadset in the dark pulling the slab train from the ETWorks to the Irwin Mill. Hope that helps.
This video is awesome! Love the beginning shots with the fog/smoke. Gave the train a very eerie look.
Outstanding video!!
Great video!!
"I think I can I think I can..."
Thank you for taking the time to go to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in July 2022, Sam, to capture these trains on the Union Railroad. The opening scenes of the train coming out of the tunnel were wonderful! Was that smoke from the taconite train in that depression outside the tunnel? That amount of smoke seemed to be overpowering. The trains near the steel mill in Braddock, Pennsylvania where interesting to view.
A thousand thumbs up👍🏽 What an incredible job on this video! What an incredible rail fan location.
Epic!
Outstanding videography! I model “The Railroad” (URR) as it was known back in the day. You captured my #24 in the lead an a glimpse of my #33
That's a fascinating system. Looks very rural in places
Love this!!! Not sure but looks like 5 old ALCO or EMD units absolutely screaming to pull this heavy payload. Tunnel filled up with exhaust as it was pulling through.
This a fantastic catch Sam! Tyler loves trains too! Syracuse NY 👍👍
What do you mean by “ALCO EMD”? Those are two separate locomotive manufacturers
@@northernohiorailfanningpro8899 you’re correct- I didn’t type “ or”. This is exactly why i hate adding a comment on UA-cam videos. Someone like yourself always has to correct me….
Great. This is another one to share. Thank you very much for uploading it.
Thank you for watching and sharing!
Good stuff, Sam. The tunnel shot was very cool.
that’s really cool! I bet DJ from djs trains would like this because he models the Union. I’ve always been interested in the Union because it was one of those owned by US Steel like the EJ&E.
Note those BLE (former Bessemer and Lake Erie) reporting marks! CN is a fairly consistent customer it seems.
BLE is owned by CN, but still does business under its own name.
Nice catches!
It is so nice to see end-cab switchers (my favorite loco type) out on the road doing heavy pulling. But the exhaust coming out of that tunnel--yikes!
What grade of coal were those switchers using? I love it great video.
Imagine being the brakeman if there was a caboose on the end 😷🤧
No wonder they don’t have a caboose on that job!
Great video! Do you know what kind of signals the URR uses?
Aren’t they switcher engines.? Even if they are cool video
What video camera do you use? You make some great videos with it.
