    Thanks very much.Jjust replaced the battery on mine, saving the cost of calling out an engineer. Must be a very old system. It looked old when we bought the house with it already in, 18 years ago!

    UPDATE to my previous post one hour ago. Problem is now solved. Opened the front cover to check the two internal fuses. Both were ok. I noticed that although the power was off and the power LED not lit, the other LEDs were still on, which confirmed the battery was still active. There was quite a bit of dust inside, so I removed the battery to wipe it clean. When I re-connected the battery, there was a bleep and the panel suddenly came back to life. I turned mains power back on, pressed the lit Tamper button to cancel it, and everything has returned to normal. Phew!

      This might be a bit late for TC, but if anyone else reads this, the reason the keypad "locked out" or became unresponsive was because when the power to the panel was cut, the battery was low on voltage and the pcb couldn't operate on the reduced voltage, hence the lockout. The battery should be replaced with a fresh one.

    I found the hinges on the alarm panel cover to be very brittle and break off easily. Make sure to fully open the panel before trying to remove the door. One I worked on was mounted side on in a cupboard, so not able be facing it directly, the clips snapped off, it could have also been due to age and the heat weakening them over time. Luckily the tamper spring will be pushed down enough with the single screw securing it and I had to tape around the cover, to make sure that was secure. I'm hoping a cheap Optims XM6 goes up on eBay to replace it but it will hold for now!

    Thanks for this video Jake. I'm having problems with my Optima XM burglar alarm.
    Yesterday the outside alarm suddenly went off. After watching your excellent video, I removed the battery.The details printed on it were : 'Sealed Lead Acid Battery 12V 2.2Ah'.
    I visited a DIY shop and they said they had the same battery but it was a 12v 2.3Ah. The retailer stated that the 0.1Ah shouldn't make any difference. Was he right ?
    Anyway I bought it. During fitting the new battery, the internal alarm was set off, so I immediately entered the code to silence it. After this the red tamper light lit up. I then opened the front door and the outside alarm had stopped ringing at last !
    However, whenever I attempted to put the cover back on the box it set off the internal alarm.
    As it was late at night and I' had enough,I left the front cover off the alarm with just the red power and tamper lights on. This morning I noticed that the red tamper light had gone out, so only the power light was on. I managed to put the cover back on without the alarm sounding. However when I started to enter the code on the keypad nothing happened. In fact none
    of the keys were operable. The keyboard was completely dead. Not sure where I go from here, so wondered if you could help please.

      Either wire up a new panic button or open up the panel and if it’s the same model as this one, there should be a terminal marked as PA. You just need to take the wires out of that terminal and put a little wire link between the two terminals to close the PA circuit. If the button has another 2 wires, they are probably for a separate tamper circuit in the button, so they need to be removed from the tamper terminals as well.

    This unit was here when I moved in and I don't use it - If I follow your instructions below to disable the alarm completely - will this cut power to the motion sensors to and in turn kill the noise?

    Hi. Good videos. It's been many years since you posted, but here goes asking for help! My attack light is on. The panic switch was removed when a new front door fitted. I can't access the wiring (now somewhere inside the wall). I could deal with the connection on the PCB but cannot enter day mode ( to remove the panel) until the triggered switch is delt with... Any thoughts?

    • @jakemcintyre4820
      @jakemcintyre4820  2 роки тому +1

      If the attack light is on due to the panic button being pressed/defaced/removed/tampered with, then the alarm panel will not reset until the panic button has been reset. The panel 'locks out' and deactivates the keypad to avoid any further tanpering with the system. What you need to do is take the cover off the panel, take out the wires from the PA circuit and cut and bend a paperclip in half and screw it into the two PA terminals. This will 'link out' the PA circuit, you can put the cover back on and the panel will now reset. The alarm system will work as normal minus the panic button which has now been taken off the system. If you ever get the panic button sorted out by the new front door you can just take the paperclip out the panel and put the two wires you removed back in the PA terminals and the panic button will be back on the system. I hope this helps.

      @@DJunclepaul2nd No problem. I don't think taking the cover off will create an alarm condition as the panel is already 'locked out' due to the PA circuit fault. Even if it does go off, it will be a tamper alarm, and a tamper alarm only sets off internal sounders, so the panels internal speaker will go off and any other internal sounders or bells which you may or may not have will also go off, but the bell box will remain silent, but the strobe will flash if it has one. But like I said because your panel is locked out I don't think it will create an alarm condition anyway. I don't think it will do anything before the panic button fault is cleared. You have a good weekend too 👍

    I'm asking here as this is literally the only place I can find where someone seems to know anything about these alarms!
    Scenario: Have never used the alarm in the 6 years I've lived here. Never touched it, never had issues etc. Had to turn fuses off for lights as a light switch needed replacing. Turn fuses back on and the alarm goes off. When fuses on and alarm ringing, the red power light is on, and that's it, with ear piercing alarm going. Try to input code and nada happens - there's no beeping from the keypad... nothing, alarm continues. Have to switch fuses off again to make it stop and all lights go off on alarm box.
    I have *assumed* from desperately researching that the battery needs replacing, which is why the keypad doesn't respond. If i replace the battery (using this super helpful video as a guide - thanks) I hope that I can then turn the fuse back on, input the code and make the alarm stop... I hope that is how it will play out anyway.
    Do you think it *is* the battery and that this is how it will work out, or can you think of any other issues that there may be?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @jakemcintyre4820
      @jakemcintyre4820  7 років тому

      HI, Cat Baker, its always good to ask so good on you for asking! Your also right in thinking that the back up battery needs replacing- and that's why the alarm is ringing in the first place. As well as a dead back up battery there is another reason the alarm may not respond when the keypad is pressed and that's because the plug inside the panel that attaches the keypad to the main circuit board may have come loose over the years. It is hard to explain if you have never seen the inside of one of these alarms before but if you take the cover off you will know what I am talking about. If you take the cover off you will see a thin, clear plastic looking wire from the keypad being attached to the circuit board by the little black plug I was talking about earlier. Give the plug a good push onto the circuit board and make sure its in place properly. If this black plug has come loose when you push a button on the alarm keypad the button press wont be registered to the brain of the alarm- the circuit board inside the panel. If this is the problem it will also explain why there is no beep when you push the buttons on the alarm panel. Also, during the power outage the alarm may have done a factory reset in which case you will need to enter the code 0123 or 1234 to stop the alarm. Try both of these codes as well so you know that's not the problem. It boils down to those three things, the alarm could be refusing to stop because of 1) a dead back up battery 2) loose mini black plug connecting keypad to circuit board 3) the code has changed because of an automatic reset in which case you enter 0123 or 1234. If nothing works, remove the cover and cut the wire that goes into the terminals marked bell + and bell - and this will permanently disable the alarm. I wish you the best of luck in diagnosing the fault and I hope you have it sorted soon.

    Should the alarm sound if there is a power cut/you disabled the power? If so how do you stop it? I'm trying to do some electrical work and the alarm goes off after a few minutes. So I have had to turn power back on. Is there any way to see if battery is working (should be it's new)

    • @jakemcintyre4820
      @jakemcintyre4820  7 років тому

      hfs83 no,the alarm should not sound if there is a power cut or the power is switched off. this is a definite sign of a dead back up battery. if you are unsure if the battery has power you shiuld remove it and test for current with a multimeter. if the multimeter gives no reading the back up battery is dead and should be replaced. on the lanel circuit board there may be a back up battery fuse. if still no luck replace this fuse so you know that a dead fuse wont be causing any problems.

      Darren Corbett burglar alarms are low voltage and they cannot give you an electric shock providing you know what your doing. as soon as mains 240v enters the panel, a transformer cancels it down into next to nothing. as long as you dont touch the one live wire or the terminal block ( which Is insulated anyway ) you will be fine. The only time you will need to remove mains power is if you are ripping out or replacing the system.

      wrong
      1- wrong battery should be a 7 ah to meet grade 1 standby time
      2- battery condition not checked an dated and marked on battery

      we get this all the time , then we have to go out and put it right .
