- Earlier this year, the Army issued a one-year suspension on the use of horse-drawn caissons for funerals at Arlington National Cemetery after several horses died, and an investigation determined that conditions for the horses were "unsafe." Efforts are underway to make major improvements. David Martin reports.

Thank you so much to those who spoke up!
These horses deserve better care , they are providing a service just like military personel .
That's heartbreaking, thank you vet Miles¡!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're a hero ❤.
unacceptable
🕊️May the two beauties rest in peace 🕊️
Horses how we abuse our greatest friend. He ploughed our fields he enabled us to travel. He delivered our food and took brave men to wars. He raced he jumped and became part of sport. He deserves better than old harness to hurt his body. These horses serve us well let's start serving them better.
How could the commanders there even allow this crap to happen? They just didn't care!!
WoW this is soooo sad! These horses should be treated like royalty..
Thank you CBS!
And this happened in one most important rituals in our military… if nobody cares about these horses that’s just sad.
Happy they are getting help 👍🏾
Let heads roll
There was supposed to be people looking after the horse's did they just not care & did the high up one's not bother to do checkes on the horse's may god above forgive you all . The horse's were doing a job with pride even when in pain they done the job . Hope that this never happens again it is absolutely disgusting . Treat the horses the way you want to be treated
With respect kindness & care . From across the pond G B
These horses are soldiers just like their human counterparts and they should be treated as such with respect and and love. Just because they don’t were a uniform doesn’t make them any less heroes for what they do.♥️🐴
Disgusting. What a travesty. Horses are one of the most abused animals throughout history. Thanks to cars it got better. And now the abuse when pulling a veteran before being laid to rest. Double whammy. Thank you Major. You are my hero!
Caring for them properly shouldn't be hard to figure out. If sores are common, they are doing everything wrong. What kind of cruel oversight is this? The caretakers were at fault and should not be returned to their duties. They need to move on. Including their higher-ups. This is NOT rocket science.
Sounds like typical government
Find it difficult to believe
Why? This is what people do to
animals everywhere!🙏🏻
Bravo, 🇺🇲🙏IT TAKES A WOMAN🎚📖🔥
Time will show that these two women were in fact the problem and not the solution...
Speciesism. What it can look like in practice. Thank you for having stepped up for these horses.
Shameful!
What the heck this is so sad😢
I am Horse lover and this breaks my heart.Horses are one of God's most beautiful creatures.
Here's how the military works : recruit a kid from farmland of America, oh, you get to go work on computers or some other field completely unrelated to their core experience. Recruit a kid from an urban environment, who has never seen a horse before in person in his life : oh, you go get to work with horses! Geniuses! Add to that the insane bureaucracy that would think " we have been using the same equine gear for 100 years, why change? " and you have a recipe for disaster.
Glad someone stepped in for these poor animals. Hopefully the Army learned a lesson from this disaster in the making, but I am not holding my breath.
Just terrible.😔
Sad that no one said anything sooner. I could see the lameness in a horse in the video.
OMG!
Need a job?
Study to become a farrier.
They're sort of halfway between blacksmiths and veterinarians. And becoming very rare.
No, they are NOT halfway between blacksmiths and veterinarians. A farrier trims and shoes horses feet. Yes, it takes knowledge to do that but nothing like a veterinarian. Blacksmiths work with metal. SOME farriers learn how to blacksmith, but very few do. It is extremely difficult physically, and people rarely can work beyond their 40's or 50's. And they really aren't that rare.
@@boycott2720 Depends on where you live. Here in East TN, there is a farrier that travels up to 2 1/2 hours in any direction from his home to service horses because he is just about the only game in town. He was interviewed on local PBS and said in the interview that there is almost nobody taking up this profession.
@@guns2317 That could be true, but I really can't imagine anyone wanting that job these days. If you charge too much, people can't have horses and you lose your job. And you need to be able to retire in your 50's most likely. Plus, more people are doing their own horses since shoes are not needed as much.
I thought the percherons pulled the caissons these horses look smaller than percherons.
There is nothing wrong with the design of the McClellan saddle the OGCP is using. The problem is that they are using saddles with trees too small for the horses of today, especially if the saddle trees are a hundred years old. The saddle has to fit the horse and not the rider. The injuries shown in this video are indications that the saddles are sizes too small for the horses.
I have questions about the veterinarian. I would think if they were present on a regular basis and looking at the animals, they would have noticed these things. I would be very interested to find out what she knew and why she didn't sound the alarm sooner. Blaming untrained staff is one thing, but she obviously has training so I think there is some space for accountability on her part
Whats crazy is that the major was giving them the wrong medicine. She gave soldiers the wrong eye medication for one of the horses. The horse almost lost his eye because of the major who is the Vet. It's a shame the truth is being covered up for a feel good story. Both of those lady's are also under investigation for their practices. They're just trying to get ahead of what's coming for them.
@@samwise8580what is the source of this information that we can Google for? As UA-cam no longer allows links in comments...
You are correct..... She is trying to deflect blame from herself. She was in charge of all horse care for the entire period that the unit has had problems. she's been there for 3+ years and everything on that video was under her watch.
how do you know this information? this is not information that the public has access to. @@samwise8580
You can judge the state of a nation by how its animals get treated. The moral and ethical degradation of the USA is evident in this situation.
You don't need any knowledge of horses to know when an animal is suffering, you see the pain in their eyes and their body language.
Outrightly cruel and inhumane!
In my country everyone who worked with those horses would be prosecuted.
God help these majestic creatures, we’ve become oblivious to abuse at every level of our military service. Is there a legal filing that could be brought by an animal rights organization against the US Govt to prevent them from using animals for these ceremonies?
I've always referred to horses as "healing animals" but for the Army to be so blind to what their own four-legged soldiers were going through is ridiculous, the chain of command is there for a reason and if they can't help a soldier in need what good are they in uniform or to our country!
Shameful.
Inexcusable stupid cruelty!
Shameful and sad. It's 2023 -- horses should not be exploited in this way. Our fallen service members can be honored and revered without the use of horses. Times change, traditions change. Thank you, CBS for bringing attention to the inhumane treatment of these animals.
If animals are being taken out of circus's why do we have to use live horses at Arlington?? We have motor vehicles modern times don't call for casinos any longer. Cruel and mean
No, they just need to be cared for properly. What do you suppose would happen to these horses if they weren't doing the job they are? Clue, look at what happens to horses used by the Amish as they get older. Many would end up at auction, bought for slaughter. Particularly with the current recession and inflation, these aren't good times for horses.
@@KMPossible0003 Nope -- it is not a "perfectly normal thing" in 2023.
@@KMPossible0003and people are to lazy to remove the halter. Another way for a horse to get injued.
@@KMPossible0003 Not sure if you're talking to moi👋. 3, trail and team penning/sorting. My state bannned slaughter, so now horses bought at auction for slaughter are shipped to Mexico, a longer and more hazardous journey to their demise. Typical for my state-good intentions without any understanding of long term implications. This is why it's important for the owner to keep older horses. They've given their youth and often soundness, and face a downward trajectory. The veterinarian seems knowledgeable and motivated. Upgrade all the tack, use better grooms with some horse experience, the government can surely afford it, considering how they squander our money on much less noble aims.
Because it's tradition.
So we're going to use this as an excuse to stop honor ceremony
Our military vets can be honored without exploiting horses.
Did you even watch this video????? Honors are still being rendered.
Dead people arent real
@@Val-uy2meOr maybe care for the horses better. You can do both you know
