How refreshing to see that these horses are respected and given carefully monitored retirement. Too often, here in America, horses are simply discarded and sent to auction, often sold to kill buyers. God Bless you British Military for honoring the service your horses have given to you. I wish the world could be a kinder place!

They aren't painful. They are used to induce stress as a method of training. And whilst not particularly desirable, negative reinforcement is far more effective in regards to training than positive reinforcement.

Is that where they go? I thought they all went to my Grandparents. I had the most MAGICAL childhood. My Grandparents had this wonderful/ terrible habit of taking in the worn out, sick/ disabled and "untrainable" horses and ponies. My family has always been one month away from the poor house, but we always found ways to give these unwanted horses a loving home and top notch care. (The horses always got new shoes before we did😊) I've had everything from a blind pony, to a pony with liver cancer to a string of wild, untrained horses who all became my treasures. My Grandparents have both passed away now and the city is putting apartments where our farm was, but I will always have the memories and lessons I was lucky enough to have had. Along with the knowledge that my family and I gave great homes to countless horses (and dogs, cats, foxes, raccoons and a duck). 😊😊

So, American Civil War reenactor here. The association I belong to includes two horse cavalry units and it takes a HELL of a lot of work to integrate a new mount into the troop. I'm told by the cavalry troopers [I'm infantry myself] that it can take up to three years to get a horse trained up to the point that they can be ridden in a skirmish with confidence. Not only is it becoming 'stable buddies' with the rest of the horses, but the flash of metal, the sound of musketry and cannon, and the pressure of cannon fire on sensitive noses and ears.
But God, they add a lot to the spectacle of the show.

Some of this comment section is just annoying me.
    BITS. ARE. NOT. ABUSIVE.
Sure, if you use them wrong, they can be, but bits are just a thing to help the horse move. English riding mouth-reins, meaning with some pressure on the bit, it encourages the horse to move. It’s a nudge for the direction of the horse. It’s taught pretty early on how much bit you should have control of to keep the horse comfortable, and they even make different types of bits to find the one most comfortable for that specific horse. Bits aren’t abusive.

Agreed, though bits can be used for abusive. But everyone lets one bad apple ruin the whole bunch having everyone going around saying bits are torture tools. I've had plenty of uneducated people come up to me and give this whole lecture about how I'm missing treating my animal, at how bits are these insane torture abusive tools. Its annoying and irritating that some people are so hive minded about bits.

Race horses are a different temperament, they are skiddish and prone to bite or kick… not their fault, it’s how they’re breed, to be quick and light on their feet… a friend of mine used to try to get horses from the tracks if one just wasn’t making the grade but out of all the trainers after hearing her goal was pasturing these horses and giving them a mellowed retirement, only two went to the owners and she paid minimally for them… 2 out of the potential 200+, not a good ratio…

I don't see how shoving a piece of metal in a horse's mouth and burning metal shoes on a horse's feet is respect or love. Just because someone says its good for the horse doesn't mean it is. ( if u want to know more watch, think like a horse on UA-cam it helped me)

    • @ohbre488
      @ohbre488 5 років тому +7

Lucy B Shoes help the horse. And they aren’t ‘burned’ into their feet. They’re nailed in they are changed out every so often. Also a hackamore on a re-enactment or on the actual field won’t cut it.

What a lovely film, the horses are so beautiful, and deserve a long retirement after their service. I had no idea that they could get anxious about being out in the paddock on grass for an extended time,I imagined that they would be overjoyed. Always glad to learn something. Thank you and keep up the good work❤❤

The ages these horses reach goes to show the care they have as they work from a young age even alot of pet horses dont reach the age these retire at its so nice they also retire to a place they still get the care they are used to and they have a quarantine period to allow time to distress and adjust to being in a field and with people there who are ex military and knows the norm of the horses before retirement and him just being around the horses will help them adjust quicker as his stance will be familiar to the horses

I visited that place last week actually. The horses there are gorgeous. ☺They even care for some donkeys and Shetland ponies. So happy they're being cared for.
However, bits on lead ropes? That's a bit harsh, especially since some horses there were in their late 20's! Oh well, this is what we get in the equestrian world...
By the way. People are complaining on why they're in stalls, this is becuase they let people visit there and pet the horses. There are pastures around the place so I highly doubt they're kept in there all the time since it is opened for visitors from Thursday to Sunday, a chance to let the horses out.

Cantering Dreams well how would you feel to be in a stall all the time for peoples entertainment? And keeping a horse in a paddock for like 2 hours probably is awful considering they are herd animals that are supposed to run and walk and trot and canter all the time.

Are these wonderful horses ever offered up for sale/loan/part-loan to the general public. My paternal Grandfather, who I never met him, as he died of a cancerous war injury when my mother was only 11 years old, was in the RA (Royal Highlanders / Scots Dragoon I think) and I have inherited the love of army horses - especially the Cleveland Bays and the Drummers! Now that I am of retirement age (or close enough) I am looking to buy/loan/part-loan such a horse to have some fun adventures with.

Historically, the United States military horses were shot when retired (no longer actively required) and military dogs were abandoned in the country that they were deployed in.

Jessica Cyr really? My Dad served at Ft Robinson, Nebraska for 8 yrs in the Veterinary detachment. While he was there they had 12,000 horses and mules they trained and 3000 war dogs. They didn't shoot the horses, except he did have to shoot several culls for the German POWs to butcher to feed the dogs. The butchers usually kept some meat to eat extra too
