  • Breathing, the term often used for the undesired change in angle of view when focusing, is a potential frustration for video shooters, and not really a concern at all for still photographers.
I suspect, many, like me, never gave much thought to this aberration or how its tested, demonstrated, and talked about in lens reviews. However, in looking into this, I’ve found that the standard way of showing the aberration - a pair of images shot at the minimum focus position and infinity - often does a very poor job at actually illustrating the real impacts in our video.
In this video, I’m kicking off a short series looking at lens breathing in a more comprehensive way. This first video covers the background: the questions I’ve always had and the testing methodology I’ve developed to answer them. And along the way, we’ll discover some interesting things about how lens designs affect this, and the problems with the traditional testing methods.
Finally, the series will continue on with a detailed look at a verity of Canon lenses.
