- This video is a how to guide on how to repair the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor on Lexus vehicles with ETCS-i. When this sensor fails, the DTC codes that pops up will be P1120 / P1121 and your vehicle will usually be in limp mode. This fix will apply to any 2JZ vvti such as #GS300 #IS300 #sc300 #supra #supramk4 #4runner #IS200 or any other vehicle with ETCS-i.

After watching your video , i repaired mine on 03 GS300 , the way i did it was i scratched almost half moon and then used my heat gun to soften the plastic tabs and lifted the white part until half moon broke off , did my soldering and again used my heat gun to soften the tabs , slid the half moon into the tabs , bent the tabs over the half moon and glued the haft moon back in place , worked perfect , thanks for the hint . very informative video . Saved me money .
Tried it. It works! Saved me $200+ bucks. Just be careful not to scrap the surface of the circuit board while scoring. Thanks Guy!!
Just did this exact repair on my Toyota 4 Runner 2001 3.4L. Did not have to pull the throttle body as the four Philips head screws were front facing. All is good. Thank you Luxious Automotive!

@MrStumpranch same thing on the same vehicle is why I’m here lol
I just purchased a GS300 in Melbourne and got told to rid of the limp mode I needed to change the throttle body because of the sensor or something... Did that and hasn't worked.. Couldn't believe there's a video here of what it actually is!!! I thank you sir and shall try this next weekend!! Thanks again 😁🤙🏽
Did the video help?
Just repaired my 98 gs300. Appreciate the detailed video!
Worked for me. I was skeptical too! Thank you for saving me $200 for the part. Mine was the solder joint in exactly the same place. Open circuit VC to VPA2 pins 1 and 4. Good instruction on soldering.......Master Toyota Technician.
Thank you for this. Worked like a charm. Had to pull cable off battery and reset for the check engine light and vsc to go away. After that perfecto!! Much thanks!!!
Really works! My 2000 GS300 is running great again!
Did you have any codes? What was the symptoms?
Absolutely the best solution, thank you!!! I followed this and it fixed it. Mine failed on my 01 at about 230k. Was not going to spend $200+ on that sensor when clearly the solder joints are really the fail point. Nothing to lose on this and it works!
Thank you for your feedback, glad to have helped
Hey Chris can u reply
Shadow sure, what’s up?
Chris I need help with my is300 u got insta ?
My is300 is hesitating will this work? I got no reply from the video creator. Thanks
Very cool tutorial, I tried this on my IS300. The car seems to be running good but I still have that trac light coming on and off and the code 1121 is still coming up on the scan.
had this happen on my 2001 is300 just finished up doing this and everything seemed to work perfect. NO MORE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. and the car has power again thanks for the video .
Awesome, glad to have helped

@@rotary_13b78 Hey who invited the bag of doritos! xD
This works I did it. Thnks! 👍
I used a hard piece of plastic and some 90 second setting jb weld to close the cover
You dont want to pry too hard...then prays and breaks it😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you for a good clean instructional video, I will be trying it this weekend as my 2nd hand replacement throttle body shit it’s self and is having issues once hot
Just got an is300 yesterday kept going into limp mode and throwing codes. Was sceptical of this but Pulled off throttle body and resoldered this and cleaned the butterfly. So far so good, just pulled it back off to jb weld the broken hole. Thank you!!
Definitely worked for me! Thank you! 2001 gs300 212k on the odometer, going strong again!
Eddie Robison is it just 4 bolts to remove (12 mm) then plug in?
@@viscioushattermaid4410 there are four 8 mm bolts. But I had to remove the throttle body to access all the bolts. So I needed a new TB gasket to put it back together.
Eddie Robison I have the same
year car you have. I will attempt this today somehow. So it’s not 12mm it’s 8mm bolt? If only a video of removing and installing this part is available.
@@pyro707 yes, 8mm bolts if I remember correctly. Sorry I didn't make a video. If I remember right those bolts were tough to reach, that's why I removed the throttle body. Good luck with it!
Worked. You the man and / or women... You the human .. and / or robot. You just good!
Use a dremmel for the straight cut. Makes easier to open and seal back up.
I agree with you. That was a messy surgery.
Worked on my 02 4runner. Thanks!
Can I remove the accelerator pedal position sensor without removing the whole throttle body?
Just worked on my 01 4runner. Thank you!
Just did this today thanks for the video saved me some money
It works If you do It right I just lost a washer in the process of putting it back together. Thanks!!!!
a quick way to fix this that i dont recommend lol nice and good job man thanks for the help!!!
He means reheating and reusing the old solder.. he doesn't recommend... I did this last night and it worked. I used a drimmel though to cut the plastic.. so I could have as much or a peice to use and put it back together with apoxy.
Hello, I see the video is from 2018, but found it very insightful. What I did want to ask is have you ever tried to disassemble the APPS and removed the whole electrical board instead of breaking in through the backside? I own a 2001 4Runner with a P1120 & P1121 code. Unfortunately, Toyota doesn't sell the APPS individually, instead trying to sell you the entire throttle body with both TPS & APPS sensors attached for $675. Have you found a place I can purchase the APPS w/o the throttle body? Would be great to hear from you. Thank you, Eric
The contact points that needs to be worked on are on the back of the APPS. Cutting it open would be the fastest and direct way.
The APPS on the 2001 4Runner looks similar in shape and design. You can try this method and report back. It's free so if it helps then it's a win. But if not then you'll just have to replace the one that already failed.
@@LuxiousAuto I have a similar issue with my 2001 4 Runner that I am now quite certain is due to one or some of those solder joints going loose. Looking at the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor head on, there are 4 easily accessible Phillips head screws. I don't see a reason to have to pull the throttle body. Am I missing something?
@@LuxiousAuto Hello, I am happy to report that after removing the APPS, being very careful not to strip the 4-Phillips-head screws, I was able to use your technique and repair my APPS sensor, thus saving myself about $700 on parts alone for a new/complete throttle body unit. The APPS is not sold separate by Toyota or any 3rd party parts company for my year/make vehicle.
NOTE: Instead of prying up and breaking the plastic backing, I used a multi-tool with a very fine tooth blade to surgically make the diameter cut and again around the sides, just so I could remove the half moon white plastic piece exposing the 4 solder points. Once fixed, I just used gel super glue to put it all back together. #WIN!! I would add photos here, but it doesn't seem to like the "paste" option.
It's been 2-days now and seems to be working great. I want to sincerely thank you for doing the research and posting this very helpful DIY video!!! Love my 2001 4Runner and it's running as smooth as ever! 260k+ mls. It's my daily/work vehicle, hauling video production gear. Roughly 300-500lbs. www.loftdm.com THANK YOU!
@@dcvideoonline Having just done this fix myself, I would highly recommend spraying the 4-phillips screws with WD40 or some type of pipe-break to loosen the 20+ years they have been in there, prior to attempting loosening. I'd give each a tap with the proper size phillips head screw driver and slowly try to break them loose. Put a lot of force inward. DO NOT STRIP THE PHILLIPS HEADS. TAKE YOUR TIME. You do not need to remove the throttle body. I'd take pictures of it on the truck and of the unit before starting. Good luck!
@@ericbugash5107 tried posting this info in the largest 4Runners Facebook group but the post was denied.
I done that kind of repair on electric parts different times and that save you many, like this part is $300- dollar auto parts, plus labor an diagnostic for this repair you ll be paying $600dolars thanks for the tip.
Has anyone else also tried it. Looks very interesting and a money saver
Joseph Wall it's been done quite a bit. the idea came from a post on lexusowners.com as detailed in the description. And I've personally fixed quite a few vehicles with this specific issue.
Thank you bro. I going in lol
Hi there this video was super helpful. I took the other side apart and can’t get it back together. Tips please.
That's awesome. I think I'm having the same problem on my Sierra. I'll have to find out if this will work for me.
You have a video of the piece glued together?
Wondering how they glued it back to be air tight
This also works for the failed brake light sensor in the back.
I can’t figure out how to fix my failed brake light sensor in the back. Hope this helps and thanks.
pyro707 it’s on the driver side above the rear wheel well. Solder all the large connections even if the look tight.
Thanks!!!!! Its working! Like new one!
How do you make it air tight?
Hi,
I have a also same Lexus GS 300 model 2001. My car same throttle problem only, once desoldering and soldering it will be working sure ?
Can u please explain to me?
Could this be the reason my 2jz gte vvti has a too low cold idle and the rpm drops and dies if the engine gets warm/hot? Looking forward to try this. Thank you for the video
I purchsed a new one from Amazon it worked for s bit now its holding back pedal went to the floor today..
thanks fixed my car
RESET THE BATTERY FOR THE SENSOR TO WORK AFTER
my Ariato 2jz gte has a problem with cold idle and runs super rich, I have checked voltage on this sensor and on closed Throttle it's showing 1.4 volts.? Shouldn't that be 0.4 volt ? Going limp mode too
Did you remove it from under the steering wheel? Or no?
Under the hood of your car
hoping this works for me, just had my 1121 code pop up tonight after a road trip.
Does the APP sensor have special procedure during installation?
This worked. Holy crap
Thank You.
Thanks mate worked on my 1998 jzs161 2jzgte. stoaked been sitting in shed to long
if I just buy a new sensor, can I replace it without having to remove the whole intake?
How did you get to it? Where is it located?
Is that the same for the LS400 p1126 code?
Nice one boss
Thank y
good job !
what are some of the symptoms u’d experience if this issue occurs? Experiencing intermittent throttle lag/hesitation on a 05 ES330 at lower speeds. feels like i have to press the gas 30-40% to accelerate at times, other times it just takes off.
Possible that could be a throttle position sensor issue
Do you know how much new accelerator position sensor is I'm just asking cuz it doesn't look like it's worth soldering it and all that if the part is not too expensive just replace it right?
I just bought one yesterday at Westminster Lexus: $445 out the door, although a cheaper version is available on the internet. My car was dead in the water for two days and I didn't want to wait, but the price is indeed somewhat less if you have time to wait. I have the old one, and I'm thinking about giving this a shot, just in case I ever need to replace the new one.
My car is a 2001 IS300, and I'm the original buyer. 92K miles on the car, most of them very trouble free.
Saw that sensor on eBay for 150.
$20 on Amazon. Just bought one. Works great
@@anthonyakahydroantdavis8373 I would love to see the link. I only see TPS, not APPS on Amazon unless OEM, which is almost $200
@@anthonyakahydroantdavis8373 i call bullshit
Does anybody know how to put back together the spring part on a 2000 lexus gs300..plz help
My 2000 Lexus GS300 just got P1121/P1120 code and the accelerator is not working well, barely drivable. How do I locate and remove it to do the repairs that you showed? Thanks!
Look up GS300 how to remove accelerator pedal position sensor on Google.com
@@LuxiousAuto Thanks! I found the service repair manual.
It works! Thanks a lot!
My friend a retired RF engineer helped me measured the resistance between VC & E2(lower two connectors) first. Then did the complete remove, clean and re-soldering. Wait a little to let the connecters to cool down, remeasured the resistance and saw improvement of connectivity. Even it took me a while to get the sensor out because I am not very handy. But it is definitely doable and save me a lot of money. I owe you one!

22060-46010 is the part number if you are curious on the price.
How do I take this sensor out?
Where you located? Would you be able to repair that for me if I ship it to you?
Let me have a try wish me the best .
What did you use to slice the cover?
I used a rotary tool, Dremel type
How do you remove this? On the gs300 the bottom bolts they are in very tight position.
Remove throttle body first.
Removing apps on the vehicle is a good way to strip the 8mm. Remove the TB so you have better access. Saves more time and hassle trying to find the bolts and reduce the risk of stripping
Mines is broken as well
Installing this part easy?
As easy as how you remove it
I put Lucas upper cylinder lube and 15 miles later gave me an 02 sensor code and a throttle position sensor code p1121 is this coincidence? Now car in limp mode, had zero problems before adding that liquid shit and o2 sensors are all new 3 mos old
Check the section of wire above your headers.
Luxious Automotive the wires that are covered ? Could it be a loose throttle cable? Mine has some play
I took day off work and used your fix it worked! Thnks!
not gonna lie my guy, i don't see anything wrong with any of those solder points. Maybe this was a bad example?
