There’s an excellent First Hand account of a man from Iceland who was enslaved by Barbary pirates on UA-cam. An excellent listening to what happened in that period.
The name 'Berber' is used in the UK to identify a type of carpet. (Wikipedia says the type of carpet was originally made by the people of North Africa and Sahara). Words have a life of their own. 😀

The Swedes had already been in conflict with Tripolitan pirates leading up to this, so Swedish frigates joined the American Navy in combating the pirate vessels and blockading Tripoli.

When he tells the story about the first “special ops” mission where Eaton and O’bannon “infiltrate hostile territory, train a rebel leader and his men to overthrow a hostile dictator, and use other people to fight our wars for us” and then the government says “that’s a terrific idea, we’ll probably never do anything like this again or create a special ops team to specialize in it”
He is directly referring to the US Army 1st Special Forces “Green Berets” aka “Commandos” which is the US military’s foreign warfare specialists. Commandos are guerrilla warfare experts. They learn the languages, cultures, and militaries of the countries they are operating in. Then they infiltrate that country to train rebels on how to fight bad guys and fights with them.
US Green Berets were the first US troops into Afghanistan to hunt down Al Qaeda and also the biggest reason Ukraine was able to fight off the initial Russian invasion in 2022. Green Berets had been in Ukraine training their military since Russia invaded Crimea in 2014.

@@Sophie-ge7ti to be fair, CIA Ground Branch (CIA’s paramilitary wing) often embeds one of their officers with a Green Beret team since they are THE most forward operating unit on the battlefield. That’s how the CIA has the most relevant credible information so fast.

I'm not Swedish, but from what I've heard, Sweden was basically the only European nation that was actively fighting back against the Barbary pirates.
They were fighting even before the USA got involved, then we came in and turned up the heat on the pirates. I don't know if the US and the Swedes ever linked together and fought any kind of joint actions, but they definitely deserve credit for being involved in the fighting even before we joined in. 🇺🇸 🇸🇪

The USMC were at the disposal of the President only. Today the President has complete authority to take military action as Commander in Chief. However the War Powers Resolution (Act) passed in 1973 requires the president to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action and forbids armed forces from remaining for more than 60 days, with a further 30-day withdrawal period, without congressional authorization for use of military force (AUMF) or a declaration of war by the United States.

The Swedish expedition/war against the Barbary pirates was mostly a failure. The king wanted to promote Swedish trade, so he ordered the expedition, but in the end, Sweden was too weak to deal with it alone. And just as the Americans joined in, the king decided to cut a deal, which was mostly status quo. It would have been interesting to see if we had joined in with the Americans for longer. There was one small encounter where the US and Swedish navies fought together, but to my knowledge, that was all.
The commander of the Swedish expedition, Rudolf Cederström, is a pretty interesting guy though. He fought several large naval battles while a young officer in the Russo-Swedish War (1788-90). Among others, he was at the Battle of Hogland and the Battle of Reval, but his most legendary accomplishment was the Raid on Baltischport where he, with a small crew, raided the important Russian port. An event worth reading about.
By chance, he was also the commander of the Swedish naval forces out of Karlskrona (the main Swedish naval port) when the British had just attacked the Danish fleet in Copenhagen. Sweden was in a neutrality pact with Denmark and Russia at the time, and Cederström was sent by the king to assist the Danes.
Fortunately, Cederström got lucky with winds when the Brits turned towards Sweden after wrecking the Danish fleet. He got back to Karlskrona before the Brits and was in a very favorable position to resist a British attack (the base is located in an archipelago with lots of islands and fortresses as a ring of protection surrounding it).
The British attack never came, though, because the Russian tsar Paul was murdered, and everything took a turn.
It was more or less right after this that Cederström got sent to the Barbary coast.
His life later on is also filled with great stories, but I'll leave those for another time :)

10:00 After the revolution until the US Constitution was created the nation was working on the Articles of Confederation. The AoC was created to be the exact opposite of Monarchy which meant there was no centralized power among the states. Because there was no centralized power there was no funding for any military (not on a state level) thus the US military died. One of the reasons the US Constitution was created was because soldiers where not getting pensions and started rioting.
The modern holder of the name USS Intrepid is an aircraft carrier you can visit in New York City where they have The Enterprise rocket on display.
Now you know why the Japanese where terrified of the US marines. "The American's on this island are no ordinary troops, but marines, recruited from jails and insane asylums for bloodlust." Then cut to the US marines adopting a duck to help them fight on Iwo Jima then giving the duck a purple heart after it got in a fight with a japanese rooster.
Not just around, the USS Constitution is active duty, still.
Yay! Lunchtime treat for me, this was a good one, love him. The Barbary coast is something I know little about but throw in the pirates and a fascinating story. They really had quite a game going, I bet their descendants are modern day tax officials😊. Anyway, if you do more fat electrician (hopefully) would you consider devil duck? John adams was a very fascinating and, overall valuable member to the founding fathers. He really balanced out people like Jefferson and Hamilton who wanted to be extremely aggressive to basically do what they end up winning eventually.
But amazing we were able to be a nation long enough that this division wasn't enough to cause major problems though.

Quick point: In the book, the French ship is actually the USS Constitution. Not mad about the change but they did change it because they thought American audiences wouldnt like it.

It's fascinating because without a country who wasn't immediately threatened with European and African affairs, to be able to build she focus on things like trade just so Halen to continue to exist to this day with America being the default choice of you want your stuff to be protected. Until Europe becomes united, there will be no country to combat the growing continental sized organization that sadly Europe can't really achieve anymore simply based on natural resources.

The thing about the president being able to deploy the marines without needing congressional approval is that it’s not necessarily just for combat. Quite often their sent out to provide other countries with immediate emergency aid after natural disasters as the marine corps has highly trained medics, engineers, K-9 units, aircraft and naval ships for supplies, troop transport and medical aid. Of course it allows them to also be rapidly deployed in the event we or our allies are attacked as it normally takes quite sometime for congress to make a decision to send in the rest of the military or not.
The only thing Congress is quick at is giving themselves a raise.
I mean unfortunately there is a reason this saying is so accurate “congress often dances but rarely does it progress.”

One of the weirder things that came out of all this is that the Moroccan American treaty explicitly said that America could never redefine free Moors of North Africa as "Negroes, blacks, or slaves".
Two hundred some years later, there's a loose movement in the US referred to as Sovereign Citizens. These people use various historical laws out of context as a pretext to ignore the law, especially payment of taxes, fees, and licenses. Many of these people, especially those of colour, claim that they are "free Moors" not "African Americans" as justification for their "freedom".

I thought, The War of 1812 happened because the British and the French were fighting (shocker) and France threw down their IOU from America (war of independence) so America had to get involved (declare war on Britain) then France immediately bailed because the British now had their eyes firmly on America.
The war ended with a peace treaty, but word didn’t get back across the pond in time and the British attacked New Orleans (Battle of New Orleans) and the Brits got their ass kicked by Andrew Jackson.
Am I confusing different things here? Any help to sort me out will be very much appreciated.
I'm sorry for the delay, but I'll try to give you my understanding as I'm not at all an expert on the Anglo-American War of 1812: I don't think there's any formal connection between these two countries. France is at war with Britain because we have to honour our traditions, but I haven't heard anything about the relationship between France and the US and I have the impression that these are two completely separate conflicts. I hope this answers a bit?

@ToonStory-fh4gn first ever slave owner in America was a black man who slave trader, he campaigned to bring slavery to America telling people how rich it made him so he could make money selling slaves. Europeans running around catching people was a myth with Britain being the first (kinda and by threat of revolt), France and then America. Anyway I can go deep into this topic and many other topics on American history. There is a historian in the UK who is the Son of Immigrants and talks about this stuff all the time.

Cartel does it in throughout the Americas but worst in Central and South, Middle East and things like Bacha Bazi, and still in Africa. Heck man Natives had slaves before Europians got to America like the Aztecs enslaved, ate and sacrificed people of other tribes with special warriors with Serrated clubs to catch people alive and then there was a native tribe in more eastern US that had thousands of slaves, tho complete genocide of tribes was very common.
