The fact they were able to pull off everything.. The recording new but similar lines, animating different but similar scenes, EIGHT TIMES OVER, just speaks volumes to the talent of everyone who worked on it.

Endless 8 rekindled my love for TMoHS. I remember being invested in the small details and differences. Amused by the fan base rage every week. I just rewatched the series and Nagato telling they have lived 15,500+ timeloops hits so hard. The sometimes eerie takes on repeated scenes build up an uncomfortable feeling. Truthfully it could have been done by, lets say 4 episodes to the same effect. It's an amazingly bold move by KyoAni. Also I do find the possibility of 15k+ different summer outfits, bathing suits, yukatas and festival masks amusing.

I remember I first watched the Endless Eight when I was 13, my undiagnosed ADHD ass hated every second of it and I wanted so badly for it to end, yet despite that I persevered and watched all of it out of stubbornness I guess. It sounds silly, but at the time I was really proud of watching it all, it was my biggest achievement at that time lol. Now I kind of love the Endless Eight, I really love how different the experience is each episode, even if it is the exact same series of events. Plus, each episode having a different motif? Good shit right there.

As a guy who loves watching experimental films such as David Lynch's films and also is an experimental/contemporary classical music composer, I really loved the endless eight. It was very artistic and still had the characteristics of anime at the same time. I have grown to not care about people's opinions; our world has become accustomed to living on instant gratification that doesn't require much thinking or appreciation, and because of this they love to hate on things that they can't comprehend instead of trying to think deeper to recognize the intricate design and subtle elements of the art.

I remember watching the Endless Eight each week, as they aired. IIRC, I was in high school at the time. I remember that even though I knew what would happen each time, I still watched each episode without complaint, or without feeling like it was boring or repetitive. And at each of the endings from the 3rd onwards, watching Haruhi leave the cafe, I'd be cheering for Kyon to find the solution, for progress to be made. Was so satisfying to reach the end, and felt so hyped when the loop was broken.

I think the real hint at breaking the loop is Haruhi asking whether the other members want anything else to do while adding that she reserved the 31st for another activity. She is silently asking everyone else to contribute something (which is why she jumps at Mikuru's suggestion for goldfish at the beginning), but no one really will. Kyon is still kinda slacking and the other three are too passive to ever actively contribute anything. Someone could have literally said let's go back to the pool or something and the loop probably would have ended.

You can literally put every episode side by side and not one scene or event will play the same across all 8 episodes, in fact it feels like with every episode the shots, composition and camera angles become more complex and experimental depending on who's directing, is honestly amazing the amount of work Kyoani put on the arc
Sucks for the voice actors who had to record the same back of dialogs 8 times... But hey, at least everyone else had fun!

I only truly got into watching anime in 2010, so I was able to watch Endless Eight back to back in rapid succession. I think that's why I enjoyed it so much, because I could see the minute differences building rather than remembering the broad strokes week to week and forgetting the smaller details. Also, I was usually doing something else while watching it, so I got the experience of deja vu in the second episode, not realizing what was going on until yuki explained it, which was fun.

Think of endless 8 what you want, but you gotta respect the balls of producing the overall same yet not entierly identical episode 8 times with different directors and subtle differences.
My first watchtrough of the endless 8 was kinda whatever, didn't hate it and thought it was an iteressting concept, but also got why people hate it.
Ironically I did gain a new appreciation for it after watching and playing Higurashi of all things which also has a time loop story with only one character remembering everything and you really feel the dread and exitement as they get closer to breaking the cycle each time. The endless 8 isn't as extreme and focuses on other aspects, but on subsequent rewatches I really felt Nagatos pain and noticed the little differences in each episode.

No other piece of media has ever given me the experience of what it must be like to live through an actual time loop like the endless 8 arc did. I felt the monotony, I grew listless and mildly annoyed, yet by the end of it all I was absolutely blown away. As art this is truly groundbreaking and quite subversive. As a television show whose main aim is to keep its audience eagerly coming back for more, it was an absolute failure. I loved the endless 8 arc, but every single complaint leveled at the execution of this arc is completely justified. In the end it is a truly unique take on the concept that will probably never be attempted ever again. That makes it completely unique and special.

Amazing video once again. Endless Eight was mind-blowing to me, and I saw it as a stroke of genius from the studio. It set the bar of time loop so high that I never found anything as satisfying ever (Except maybe Steins;Gate). Even in Jojo's part 4, all I could think of while experiencing the few time loops was how little it did in comparison...

    • @Totaraum
      @Totaraum  2 роки тому +2

Thanks! Endless 8 is very hard to compare things with since it’s approach is so unique. Jojo and steins gate were both trying to convey the agonizing repetition of awful events, but in a way that’s paced for the comfort of the audience. Haruhi wanted the audience to feel just as bad as it’s characters, so it took it a step further by throwing pacing to the wayside. It’s very interesting stuff

Great review, when i do a analysis in something i always try to check if the subject did right in what it was meant for, and if the idea was good, most people when they go hating on this Arc end up forgetting that this was the entire point of it, to make you feel as much frustration as the characters, it really makes you relate to them, really captures their emotions and the idea itself was genius, it may not be a pleasing experience but that doesn't mean that It is low quality, endless eight was succesful in its mission and managed to be recognized, i am glad to see that i was not the only maniac that enjoyed endless eight

I guess i would be a hater of endless eight if it was entirely pointless, but when you put it into context it really helps in the build up for the disappearence movie, and it is actually a very dark arc even without using haruhi standards, one of the things that i like the most in haruhi is that even if it feels episodic at times it is always preparation for something awesome, rather than being just fillers, so it is not like there is something useless, i still feel bad for the ones that had to wait for endless eight to end tho lmao, but in the end of the day even if something is not pleasing as long as it has some good meaning or/and connection, then it is okay and not low quality, it is way better than watching something that tries so much to be good but it is straight up horrible, things should first do right in what they were meant to be

Very nice catch of the visual storytelling! Some of is it brilliant. I first liked Endless Eight because these episodes convey the feeling of long summers really well, with each having its own atmosphere but still all working with this theme.
Another brilliant thing about Endless Eight for me is that any answer could have worked, Kyon just had to do something, anything at all. It's shown by the poker game parallel at the end, when Kyon concludes that he should have taken a bet. From Haruhi's perspective, I think the point is that she wanted Kyon to do something on his own rather than just follow the group.

Remember watching this on German TV. It was painful - they'd air six episodes a week, three of them were reruns from the previous week, one was the next concurrent episode and two where random reruns of previous episodes - makes sense, exactly! They also didn't stick to a specific order in witch these episodes would air, so you better watched all of 'em unless you wanted to wait a full rotation (or for random chance) to catch up on what you missed. Do I need to mention that my family did not have a tivo? So, yeah during the endless arc I literally rewatched several episodes multiple times, without ever being sure if I was doing so 😬. Something really strange that happened to me when watching endless 8 was in the last episode after they break the loop I remember watching Kyon and Itsuki just sitting and talking in the clubroom and feeling (for the lack of a better word) kind of scared. I had just gotten though 8 episodes where the same things happened each time with little to no exception and now something new was happening. I felt a deep sense of wrongness after breaking out of the 8 episode rut I had just been through. It was subtle but ranks up there on the most emotionally affected I've been by an anime.

Neon genesis evangelion did the same thing with refusing to conform to traditional narrative and it gave us the epic congratulations ending, forget what the audience wants and expects do what expresses your art
Endless 8 was the some of the best anime I've seen, the limitation of having a the same story / plot for 8 episodes would break any other studio, but kyoani turns it into a graceful expression of what you can do with a drawn medium that doesn't work with film and a camera.
The shot with haruhi diving into the pool as the camera points at her face and the one with kyon and the camera stuck to the clock hand 10/10. It felt like a film excercise being demonstrated by a group of masters. I totally get why people hate, because not everyone gets snobby over these things. It's obvious they made this anime for people who care and study these things with a passion. Honestly, while I was suffering through parts 3-7, I thought part 8 was actually really good. It really felt like they put their best foot forward on that last one, and even though I'd seen the exact same thing happen 6 or 7 times before, I was actually enjoying the last part.
All throughout the arc I was just thinking that someone had probably already assembled a "best-of" cut with the best versions of each scene. Each episode has something fun to stand out, but it's drowned out by all the monotony of it. I think it could have really worked better if there felt like there was a slow ramp-up of how close they get to solving this. As it stands, it seems like every loop has Kyon be a different level of realizing what he has to do to break the loop, but never gets progressively closer to figuring it out. I think just about everyone figured out what the solution was by part 2, or at least I and a few others I've spoken to did.
Something I think could have made better thematic sense is if Haruhi herself doesn't change at all throughout the arc. She's always shown with different clothes, different lines, and a different ice-pop every loop, but I think it'd help to create a greater disconnect between her and the others by having her be the only one with no knowledge of the different loops, and thus no difference in actions.
All throughout, I started making a mental checklist of everything done, and a tier list of which outfits, swimsuits, yukatas, masks, ice-pops, seating arangements, and sleeping positions I preferred. I'll admit in hindsight, it does put you in the mind of Yuki who had to see all of that in real time for almost 600 years, but I still think it could be done to greater effect in just three episodes.
Part 1 would be exactly as it appeared first. Part 2 would set up the loop, but have no resolution, then Part 3 would really drive home the repetition while actually giving us our resolution.

I still haven't finished haruhi S2 and never watched the Disappearance movie because of losing the will to go on after watching Endless 8 for the 4th or 5th time as they aired. And then after a few seasons or years of shows that seem interesting that I don't have enough time for there's a large backlog of things I want to watch that are a bit higher in priority than a show I never finished that it's been so long since I last saw it I'd need to start over.

Watching Endless Eight for the first time (2009), was really tough, i was really confused and felt like my brain will be baked if i continue doing that, but once this arc was done, the last episode was so rewarding, that watching an episode that was not Endless Eight felt really weird.
5 years later (2013), i've rewatched Haruhi and Endless Eight came along and i was in my fighting mode, no skipping no fucking around, i powered through it.
But. it was rather good. I couldn't forget Episode 5 which was Endless Eight part 4, the ending of that episode was so memorable, i couldn't forget it to this day.
Yesterday, couple days prior, I rewatched all of season 1, it was amazing, now that I'm an actual adult, rewatching Haruhi felt incredible, i can now analyze it more thoroughly. fantastic show. (watched the broadcast order)
when season 2 started, i wanted to absorb everything Endless Eight have to give me. although Part I II and VIII are the meat of the story, they couldn't be that impactful with out the other loops, Part IV was still really, truly amazing, and Part V had very musical and for some reason optimistic and dramatic, optimistic that it'll end today, i even got a bit emotional near the end because i know that wasn't the case so ending was much more sadder.
It's great that with a few and a few more tweaks in post can make such different effect and feeling of basically repeating the same plot.
Part IV and V are the proof of that, also Part IV has the better drip at many points.
Part VI is often the quieter one, less music, more nature sounds, Part VII is the funny one, i laughed very hard, i think the actor must've felt what most people felt watching it and capitalized on it.
and Part III is when despair crashes in, but also has some very cool shots with Kyon and Koizumi talking at the park.
Part VIII is an actual different episode, and heartwarming, how everyone reacts, and how they all sit together on the bench instead of sitting separately while discussing the *dilemma* they're in.
Part VIII is still very impactful with its ending.
of course the art and colors must be at absolute peak, feels like an apology or maybe just passion to make the point of this arc to stay memorable to anyone for years to come, whether they love it or hate it this will be edged forever for anyone who will see it.
Yesterday, when i finished the Endless Eight, the next episode that wasn't from the Endless Eight was really weird, i couldn't really focus on it.
Today. I feel like rewatching it again. it was such an experience, i want it more than watching the story continue and the movie which is why most newcomers come to watch haruhi, for the movie, which is sad, because they want to skip parts of the Endless Eight, so their experience and satisfaction will be halved and they won't get the best out of it.
    that's on them.

I was so down with that story structure! I thought it was a genius idea for a story and was impressed they actually went through with it, watching through it, I was so ready to go and defend the idea, but holly fuck was the resolution disappointing! The fact that it does nothing with all the build up, no character exploration or development, nothing! Just out of nowhere in the last minutes of the last episode, they're like "well the conflict is resolved now" it single handedly make me hate the arc as much as people who didn't enjoy the idea do... I can always appreciate what KyoAni was trying to do with the Endless Eight, but I still think they could've gotten the same point across with less episodes.
The "meta" aspect of the Endless Eight that you bring up is interesting to think about though. Especially when you consider how often a lot of anime tend to beat you over the head to get a point across, Endless Eight mimics this behavior in the same way, subjecting you to eight nearly identical episodes when it could've been done in less with the same effectiveness. In that sense I value the arc a bit more, but I don't think I will ever "like" it. Just my thoughts though as a long time Haruhi fan.

You can like it for what is and Kyoto Ani being meta and trolling its audience by saying "you're in this shit too mf," but it is by no means necessary to watch in its entirety. It was an easy excuse to fill out the season to replace the disappearance arc. It was either that, filler, or a 6 episode season, all of which are as equally good as it is bad. You can argue for the endless 8 being slightly better seeing as it does technically "add" something, despite not being necessarily necessary. I see people argue that endless 8 is necessary for disappearance but that is just clear copium, just another way to justify the arc. No, even if the endless 8 arc was 2-3 episodes, it wouldn't have affected Nagato's character in the slightest in the disappearance movie, the message still comes across and nothing is loss. I like to think the endless 8 arc is an "extended cut" of what should just be a couple of episodes, its there for people who want see it, and easily mostly skippable for those who don't, both case gets the same experience, but one just makes you get into character and take the slugs.
