- Hello and welcome to a new video.
A huge THANK YOU to all my channel members for their ongoing support.
Today's video starts near Barrons Court down to Heathrow Terminal 5.
We take a look at the leaf fall speed restriction in place between Boston Manor and Hounslow West.

I hope you enjoy this new video and thank you for watching
Hi Dale, "waffle on" all you want! Another great video. So enjoy them, so relaxing! Nice one! 😊 👍
Thank you. All my life I have been told to shut up 🤣🤣
Here here Alan
@@dalecharmantravels8057certainly not telling you to shut up mate cause your doing all these fantastic vids for all your vids & editoring them as well & stop apologising there’s no need mate & im sorry again if I offended you with my “Dorothy” comment lol keep these vids coming as I’m a avid viewer lol
No apologies required (at least for me, anyway!). I thoroughly enjoy your videos, and very much appreciate the time and effort you put into each and every one…not to mention the running commentary. Wishing you all the very best!
Ditto 😊
Recently discovered your channel. As a small child I lived in Manor House so Piccadilly line was very much of my childhood. Your videos are very nice and you have a lovely personality for presenting them!
Thank you, Dale. These are all interesting.
It was great of you to make these.
In the knowledge that there will never be any more of them, I am rationing my viewing of your back catalogue to one or two videos a month to prolong the enjoyment.
It's all good , it's drizzly , it's Saturday and it's Dale , leafing season is upon us , the high pressure water trains will be out , the rail gritters will be spraying goop , and some trains will be sailing majestically through signals and platforms , ah , the joys of autumn . Where there's heavy leaf litter the rail heads can be black from the oils from crushed leaves . Your driving philosophy puts you in front I'd say . Great video 👍
Greetings Dale, I very recently stumbled upon your channel, absolutely loved it and subscribed immediately… can’t stop watching it, LOL… Thanks very much for sharing such an unique experience!
Welcome to the channel. It’s great to have you with us
Thanks, Dale. Always a pleasure to see you roaming around the Pic Underground network. Even though it's still heavy rail, it just seems to be a world apart from Mainline working
I didn't think I will like these videos so much, but I actually enjoy seeing the journeys, thank you. Very different 😊
Just discovered your channel, and absolutely love it! Keep up the great work.
Another excellent video! Although as an LU engineer, I was aware of the existence of Leaf Fall Timetables, it was nonetheless interesting to see how LU mitigates the operational risks associated with those pesky leaves! I used to think that I have a hard task dealing with the very many leaves that fall on my garden and drive at this time of the year but, having now gained an improved appreciation of the challenge that leaves present to the railway, I should probably stop moaning (not that anyone listens)!
Thank you, Dale, for this informative insight!
Dale u r doing a great job xx
Good one Dale.. thank you. Nice to be out in the drizzly daylight with you. All the best.
Great video as always, Saturday is Dale day
No need to apologise Dale my other half used to work for TFL on the buses I know editing is a pain but grateful for the time and effort put into your videos take care ❤❤
As always I enjoy you talking so never stop and a great video as well thank you Dale
Hello Dale, Love your video make me enjoy relaxing and read subtitled as profoundly deaf 🧏♂️ 😍
Fantastic video Dale! BTW I saw you tonight at Leicester Square, thank you for being so kind and welcoming!
Sound Report: Stereo is working fine 😁
Grear Video again, Dale😊
Hi Dale. Loving your videos and commentary. I’m not a train driver but I totally get the ‘braking differences’ with a full train. So many variables, weather, weight etc. All comes down to experience I guess….which, it seems, you have in spades. Keep up the good work. 😊
Excellent video, as always. The commentary is what makes the ride interesting
Fantastic content Dale.
Great as ever.
Hello from South Dublin
Always a fantastic day when you upload, Dale! Just so relaxing and calm person to listen to and ride the rails. Thanks Dale
Also the video quality looks much better, you made great changes.
Another excellent and informative video. Very interesting to see the leaf speed restrictions.
Another FAB vid Dale, very informative and interesting. Looking forward to the back catalogue and new stuff
It's great that they allow you to make the videos, the London bus drivers bosses have stopped him videoing, keep the interesting video's coming Dale, many thanks,👍
Northfields station, I think that was the 1st tube station I've used after moving to London. Also that was the station I used the most often over the years. Watching your videos bring back lots of memories from the 90s. Thank you!
I did 14 hour days (12 work/2 hour break time) 5 days a week. Being a bus driver on a rotating roster. You really have to spend your free time wisely!
Insightful. Always find uk railway signalling etc interesting
Hi Dale, great video as usual. 4:58 BTW, the camera position and sound quality are perfect. If you do some merchandise I would happily buy a badge or pin to go with my Corgi Collectors badge. lol. Keep up the good work, I think it is fascinating that other drivers use your videos for instruction purposes. Hope your MBE is on the way! Regards, Neil.
Don’t worry too much mate, we love the journeys
Another great video, thanks again Dale.
Spent September in London, travelling the underground was amazing.so were the other lines and the connection between them. The Victoria line is incredible.. the speed the trains come into the stations is breathtaking.. thanks for the videos..
The Victoria line I think is the fastest out of all the underground lines
@@dalecharmantravels8057nope it’s the 3rd Met is the Fastest then Central
Hi Dale brilliant video again. I've been watching all of your videos and I quite enjoyed them!
Thank you glad you enjoy them.
I really enjoy your videos. Always wanted to drive trains and love the Underground. Got to drive a Class37 in June. But now I'm 63, so too old to make it my job!
Hi Dale, just a note to say thanks for the really interesting videos. I come from a family of railway drivers, based in Bristol. My Dad, (no longer with us) took me to London when I was about 10, where I fell in love with the Tube. I'm getting on a bit now (nearly 68) so I don't get to London as much as I'd like. I'm a retired Driving Instructor Trainer, where we used to train our instructors to do commentary driving. Your commentaries are always great and admired. I would have thought that TfL should be very proud of you for your promotion of the professionalism and conscientious portrayal of the tube and it's staff. I also love your humour and banter, so long may it continue! How do you manage to drive from Peterborough to London every shift? You must be knackerd 🙂.
l so agree with everything you say, when other people have asked if he had permission to film l thought that if the 'bosses' watch these videos they would be mightily pleased with the expert information, precise driving and responsible and caring attitude towards the passengers portrayed by Dale, they should be begging him not to stop!! Terrific P R for the tubes!
I have only been on the underground once, in 1969, when we went with the school trip to London from Devon, it was great, Carnaby Street, and Oxford street music stores. Wow, I bought A Hendrix album in HMV which was hard to get in Devon.
A absolutely brilliant video as usual. You don't need to apologise you are only human after all
Throughly enjoyed today's video, you have been unusually chatty, and I like that, thank you Dale.😂
The quality of sound and video are fine Dale. I have watched the vids you made with your new microphone but as I am watching on TV I never really noticed whether it was mono or stereo. Still love watching these and wonder why I never transferred from Heavy Rail to TfL. Sad thing is this is the best that I will get to see how the other side of train driving goes. As said as a mainline driver it’s slightly different rules and signalling but I do love what you’re doing. Keep them coming Dale!!🐷👍
Thank you. My ex is a driver on the main line. She always said she couldn’t drive the tube as there are too many signals and too many stops. I guess for me it’s the other way around that the main line has a larger area and higher speed so I would find it difficult to drive
Brilliant as usual mate
Love the videos from Chicago Illinois ❤
Don't worry Dale you only have one pair of hands, you also need time for yourself and you are already doing a great job.
man i'm legit excited for when you start driving the new trains sometime in the nearby future, I'm sure those new units will feel like spaceships inside compared to the old 70s stock haha.
also which model of rode mic are you using? there is a way in the mic itself to make it stereo, newer rode mics have a "merged" (mono) and "split" (stereo) mode which can be gone between using buttons on receiver (not the one on the top)
Great video dale
Hi Dale, I don’t know what video software you are using but most editing software allows you to duplicate the audio channels so if it is mono on one channel you can copy and paste the single channel to the other channel. Don’t waste your money on getting software to do this. Love your videos from Australia.
Loved riding the rails with you as always. lt does't matter where you position the camera from my point of view (ha-ha) though l know you want to make the view better for us, and it is more exciting when we can see the station mirror and cameras properly. Keep up the waffling! 😃😃
Concentrating on driving and doing a running commentary, an example of multi-tasking. At my age, I’m lucky if I can even task. 🤷♂️
Dale its a pleasure to watch your video's,, Never mind the leaves Banana skins make the best slipper's
We had the same with buses with braking some buses of the same make reacted totally different. Though years ago we had some Bristol VRs you had to stand on the accelerator pedal to get them to move and you only had to breathe on the brake pedal. Take care.
Hi Dale, I love your videos. Having travelled on the Piccadilly line more times than I can remember, it's great to get a cab eye's view!
One of the questions I've always wanted to ask is how do you get back at the end of a shift, especially if it's late and the station you've ended up at is a long way from home?
He'll usually get back to cockfosters where he parks is car
Hello Dale. Nice to ride along with you. Can you see the 30 mph speed restriction in the dark what's on the tracks? Thanks for your new video 👍😃
Awesome one Dale! I appreciate that you slow down a bit before the 20 limit at Acton Town...that's using your expertise as an asset that benefits passengers with a smoother (and a bit safer) ride. Over here in NYC theres a spot on our 4 line, right near Yankee Stadium, where the current (Jerome Avenue) line, merges with a former spur that used to connect to one of the old, nonexistent elevated lines, the 9th Avenue Elevated. As such, the tracks have a rather nasty S curve which comes up very suddenly, and going northbound to Woodlawn by that point, most operators are flying at around 30-35 and the train violently jolts over the curve and this is normal....one time I witnessed a lady who was standing, mid-conversation, slam her face into the pole! Luckilly she was okay, but most passengers are easily caught off guard and to me its also a bit of a derailment hazard. So on the occasions I come across a more professional operator, that slows down to about 25 or less and people barely even notice the curve, I think of folks like you that take the time to know their job well and provide a safer and more comfortable riding experience. It doesn't go unnoticed, take care Dale!
Thank you for sharing. I appreciate the kind words
Great content. I enjoy when you waffle on a bit because sometimes there's not much to look at. What train sims are your favorite, if any?
Wonderful video sir
great video dale.i just want to ask what happens if you break a speed limit.many thanks
I learned a lot!
No need to apologise dale at all it's the way the cookie crumbles
@Dale a few questions if I may
1) are you genuinely excited or not bothered about the new trains coming out
2) are you / what are your thoughts on train spotters who cause no impact to the operation of the line
3) do you have a favourite train (by number) that you prefer out of the 73 class
4) which is your favourite pic line station and why?
5) does the blue light of the lizzie line cause you any optical issues on your line in t5?
The ATO signaling is still not finished on the District Line or Metropolitan Line but the Circle and Hammersmith and City Lines are fully ATO so off of that the Piccadilly Line won't have ATO for a while
I would guess 5-10 years before the pic line goes ATO
If you use a GroPro, it has an option to switch the red light to the back or turn it off alltogether.
I love your videos! They're a great insight into the life of a tube driver! Quick q - is there ever a chance you could be called in to do a morning shift?
Really enjoy all your videos. Many thanks for taking the considerable time and effort to produce them. Apologies if you have already covered this but what is going to happen to all the existing trains when the new ones come into service? Indeed where are they going to put all the old stock? It seems to have lasted extremely well considering its age so it seems a crying shame just to cut them all up......many thanks
I believe they are going to be scrapped. I would imagine 2 three car units will be kept as the rail adhesion trains. Not sure if they will keep one for the museum or not
The adhesion train is probably using Sandite. It’s like a jelly with sand in it. We used to have an old DMU set up to spread it in the leaf fall season
Dale, actually you have been recording it in stereo, as it’s panned over to one side. I assume only input “1” has had audio routed to it and not “1&2”.
As for correcting the audio you already have. It’s really easy to do in most software to “split” that stereo file into 2 mono files (which would be your left and right) and pan the one with your audio on it in the centre. Hope this makes sense!
Dale I noticed from Acton T to Northfields there are 4 tracks and as the district line doesn’t run there what are the extra tracks used for.
We use them ( mainly the west bound local). It may be they needed the extra lines many years ago. Although now it gives us flexibility with trains using all platforms at Acton and Northfields should an issue arise
When i was fireman on the steamtrains in South Africa, the bluegum trees oil used to make the rails slippery when it rained
When did SA stop using steam locos? I haven't been there since 2010.
They have very few left. I think only in the cape and umgeni steam railways
My understanding is the 1973 Stock doesn’t have anti-lock brakes, whereas the 2024 Stock will, which is why there are separate leaf-fall timetables. I think the Met no longer has them for this reason, they used to for the A Stock.
They still do! Some fast services no longer run during winter iirc
I like the squeaky cab
That might be me that’s squeaking
Hey mate, don't know if you've been asked before, but do you have a favourite station to pull into?
I don’t have a favourite as such. From a drivers view it’s all the same. I do have a soft spot for T5. I used to travel down there to do some plane spotting many years ago. I like the architecture of the whole terminal
Awesome video as always Dale. Have you ever done Aldgate to Amersham on the Metropolitan Line?? Love watching your awesome channel from Scotland in the United Kingdom. Hope your ok?? 🙂🙂🙂
Hi Dale great videos used to travel from southgate to sudbury Town every week when I was young. Can you tell me does a co acting signal have the same number as the signal it co acts with.?
Yes, usually with co-acting added on the ID plate, see for example WD35 at 1:20. As the train pulls away you can see both ID plates quite well on the video
Could you explain the difference between a co-acting and a repeating signal? Based on what you’ve previously said my guess would be a repeater shows yellow when the signal is red and a co-acting signal would also show red? Is that true and are there other differences?
A co acting signal just copies a signal ( near it) as visibility might make it hard to see. It can only show a red or green aspect. A repeater is a signal placed to warn you a signal may be red and can only show a yellow or green aspect
@@dalecharmantravels8057thank you!
38:36 Heard a loud pop sounded like the camshaft shutting off does the 73s use camshaft?
That's the linebreakers closing - they basically open and close giving and cutting power to the motors.
Hey Dale, just letting you know that you can disable the flashing light and the screen through the gopro (if that is what you are using) settings itself.
Any idea what they are using for the RHTT Trains we have had problems up north with the Metro’s in Newcastle was just saying from your videos I think we should have a winter timetable as well love the videos and they’re very interesting I’m learning a lot
Great video as ever, I do enjoy your nattering as you take us with you. A question if I may, at 22:40 is you're discussing a co-acting signal that is lower then then on it co-acts for the new trains. But it seems to be several feet further down the track than the one it co-acts, so which is the stopping mark for the purpose of SPADs and such? I can think of sensible arguments for either. I imagine it maybe doesn't matter too much for this pair, as you'll be stopping at the platform stopping marker, but it made me wonder about others that aren't at platforms. Thanks :)
Hi dale, nice upload. I downloaded the WTT for the pic line and it is massive, reckon the line would need at least 500 drivers. How many at your depot? All the best Dale.
I think we have some think like 150 at Cockfosters. Don’t quote me on that though
@@dalecharmantravels8057 Cheers for reply dale.
Love having your videos on when I'm working here on the computer, usually video editing. You won't need any special software, all video editing programs will allow you to take a mono, or single channel track, and make it stereo, it's just a setting. Best to do it first thing before you start to edit, that way the setting will be on all your clips.
What software do you use to edit?
Another great video, do you prefer driving in the Tunnel or outside the Tunnel?
In the summer out side. If it’s raining then leave me in the tunnel
Another good video. Wasn't as keen on the camera position this week. Preferred the new position it was in on the last couple of videos .
Plus my final question (lol), have you ever by mistake on wrong line, for example went on district line by error of the signaller or points failure?
Geoff Marshall has just released a video shot at the factory in Goole making the new Piccadilly line trains, if you would like a sneak peek at the new stock (mostly in pieces!).
A few people have sent me the video. I’ve not had chance to watch it yet as I’m at work
At Acton Town (and other stations too), do you know why there is lighting below the platform?
When you are up to it, I would like to know what training on the new trains would look like? Would you start in a train simulator, then driving the new train on a test track and then the Piccadilly Line?
Great video, very good. Do you get warning light if wheel has locked up when braking due to poor adhesion or is it driver experience by way train is responding?
No warning lights. You can feel it and also the speedo can tell you what’s going on. So if you are stationary almost and it reads 45 mph good chance you are wheel spinning.
@@dalecharmantravels8057 thanks
Very interesting video as always. Does the trains have sanding on all axles to use when its slippery out there?
No we don’t have sanders on our trains
Love your lovely videos,
Have you ever asked to rescue a failed unit (between stations and at stations), while in public use, if you do how do you this?, or there is special train to deal with it.
Hi @dalecharmantravels8057 if its OK to ask, could you give me a brief summary of what the Train Driver test comprises of? I have lost my three lives trying to gain entry into Southern Railways in East Croydon. I would just like to know, because I live outside of the distance now required to be readily avaliable in the City. Would three failures on the Surface rail test exclude you? Also, do you have that test with Lights, Pedals and have to react. thats the one that really threw me, although I got really good at the reaction game "Beep Bop" (on which I practised). 😀 How do you manged I presume you commmute from Peterborough, or stay in the City?
Enjoyable video as always! Question if you could address it in a future video - what are the numbers counting up on the wall after you leave an underground station? I'm guessing maybe they are car lengths but what are they to help you with?
Dale explained they were car lengths. If the train stops as it is leaving the driver can calculate how many cars are still in the station. This can help when planning an evacuation.
Hey hope you are well just curious why and how some drivers sit in the rear cab since it’s alarmed woudnt you need to stop every time someone passes back? 😂🙏
What happened at 14:00 when you went across the points and there was the flash and it sounded like you moved the lever a lot and it sounded like it was shaking and a beeping noise?
Just wondering, about the metropolitan line RAT, are you sure it's a D stock? I've seen videos of the A stock RAT, and I saw it once in ~2017 (I think?)
Hi Dale silly question but I notice at the stations in the underground parts white bobbles or wheels on the track, are they to help stop the train just curious as always notice them thanks.
I think you might be talking about insulator pots. They insulate the electric rails from the ground.
Dale. Hello again. Nice video. I though 2:00 t the sound was fine. I was wondering when your parents first took you into London do you remember your first Tube ride? Any found memories of it? How old were you? Thanks and take care.
Better adjustment for the in-tunnel exposure
I had that train the other day. That cab door drove me mad, keep squeaking.
That is definitely you that’s squeaking Lee 🤣🤣
Not enough to get the train out of service try harder
Question, do the cabs on the Piccadilly line of aircon for the drivers? I've heard you mention it once or twice and wanted to confirm.
They do yes. When they work
Hello! Will the line speed change on this section with the new faster Piccadilly line trains?
I wouldn’t have thought so ( in most locations ) the issue with increasing speed can be what’s called sighting distance for signals. So what that means is at the first point you can see a signal can you stop at it. The higher the speed the more chance you can’t. But I guess we will find out over the course of the next year. I believe the train can do around 70mph
@@dalecharmantravels8057 That totally makes sense! - Though would be a shame not to see that extra speed in action
Are you exited for the new trains next year? They look amazing!
I wouldn’t say excited, I hate learning new things. But I am looking forward to having a go on one
@@dalecharmantravels8057 Sorry for the late reply, they look very nice and modern. I understand not wanting to learn new things😂
Anyone else humming the Dr Who theme whilst we were in the tunnels? That camera is much better!
