I enjoy your videos way more than I thought. The Piccadilly Line was the line of my teenage years, although it was just a means of getting to the London steam sheds. In the view of Cockfosters Depot you can make out the houses in Westpole Avenue, one of which was lived in by a railway enthusiast who had old signs and number plates from GWR locos bolted to his garden wall just feet away from your trains.
"What i really want is control too ring me and say - driver put the train away"... That cracked me up!! 🤣🤣🤣

These journeys remind me of the late 70s when I worked at STC New Southgate (by ECML). I used Cockfosters and Arnos Grove for my trip back to KX and then Leeds #goodolddays

Dale I am surprised the company don't have a CCTV camera recording ahead to prove signal changes in front of you to prove you are innocent.
It shows up on the signal system. So they can play it back to confirm what the signal did. But I do agree cameras would be a good idea for any incidents
Loving the videos, always wanted to be a tube driver but unfortunately I live up north.... I was well chuffed when Train SIM ( on Xbox) had the bakerloo line on it.. and really enjoy and find it quite realistic..
Have you ever tried any commercial Train or Tube simulators (not the professional ones on tfl) ?? And how realistic do you find them??

Regards your NYC trip, you can take the Amtrak Acela from New York Penn Station to either Boston or Washington DC. Both cities are worth a visit. Several visits in fact. If you travel to Boston you will experience the networks fastest line and a good deal of history at the end of the line. If you visit DC, upon exiting Union Station you will be at the footsteps of the US Capitol and a stone's throw from the greatest free show on the planet, namely the museums that compromise the Smithsonian. Start at the Air & Space museum where America keeps some of its best toys!! DC is not marketed as a tourist destination but it really is a hidden jem.
On the overnight sleeper, maybe there will be some tickets becoming available as sudden change in MPs in Scotland

When you brake before a station, do you start with a harder brake and then loosen the brake at the last meters or the other way round? If I remember right, I also recall you saying that you might put it to neutral between the two braking phases.
You should drive the first 24' stock train because it would be a realy good video. Another good video idea would be an Arsenal FC home game video (except the seasons over rn). Also, I will be at the day of the final 73' stock, so I would love you to drive that to. :D

No they are just contacting signals. They are lower as the visibility on the new trains is reduced

Thanks for the upload as always! When you swap ends at a terminus, how common is it to find issues on the train (cleaning issues, possible vandalism etc)? Do you have to hold the train until it's rectified? I feel sorry for the staff who have to deal with the inevitable on Friday/Saturday nights!
It really depends what the issue is. So if it’s bodily fluids then it will be held or out of service until a cleaner can rectify it. If it’s some thing that could cause injury then the train would be removed from service

I don't know if you've already answered this Dale, but do you have maximum permitted driving/duty hours, and minimum breaks? Great video as always, you get the commentary just right.
So it’s a max of 8 and a half hrs a day. Max 4.15 driving time before a break. We have to have a minimum of 30 mins break
Loved Southgate, great memories of going to a school in that area, it’s playing fields backed onto the tunnel coming into Southgate eastbound/ leaving westbound, used to throw stones at the trains on our break, and hauled into the headmasters office in the afternoon as the drivers obviously complained.

No you don’t drive the same train. Some times you might get the same one 2 days on the trot
19:45 - Or worse, depending on the track layout, train positioning and signal wiring, it could even show something as outrageous as red-over-green. Extinguishing the repeater altogether is just a much safer design; you don't need to know what is going on behind the red signal anyway since you don't have the authority to go there.

Is there still any old 1983 stock at Cockfosters depot? Used to be a few cars.
No there are no old stocks at Cockfosters depot. The middle platform at Arnos does get used a fair bit to travel east. More often than not on my last trip I get put in the middle
I recently had a LT museum trip arranged in the restored 1938 stock tube between Oakwood and Acton Town, but the day before we were notified that because of overnight vandalism to the 1938 stock tube the excursion was cancelled, I wondered where the vandals could have had access to this train, at Acton Town where the museum depot is or was it Oakwood?
I’m not sure if it was in Northfields depot or Ealing Common depot

Not really. A lot of the clocks are wrong. You can easily make up a little bit of time if the clock you are using is wrong
Nice one dale. I just wanted to ask ,why did they take the points out on the District line local by any means? When you could, could Piccadilly line Trains run down to Richmond and Wimbledon? Can the Piccadilly line also potentially get onto Bakerloo line tracks up to Harrow and Wealdstone?
I can only assume it’s to do with the district running ATO ( although they are still driving manually in theta section). We could have gone to Richmond but not Wimbledon. The tracks for Wimbledon is some where near Earl’s Court. As for the Bakerloo there are no direct places from the pic line. Maybe from one of the other lines. As we could go down the met/northern:vic lines. ( there are points to run on to those lines) I hope that makes sense

They are yes. All stop signals have a train stop ( in the up position when the signal is red). That will trip the trip cock on the train releasing all the air out of the brakes bringing them on

No they are often wrong or out of sync. One at T5 is several hours behind the rest 🤣

Most of the time it’s the Green signal. However at places like Heathrow I just use the clock that I can see from the cab. Unless I know it’s way out

Dale, besides the new starter co-acting signals, already discussed, I felt I was seeing some of the line signals having larger/brighter aspects then I recall. Have there been replacements or was this just an effect of time-of-day and/or camera making the lights seem brighter? Some of the multi-homes (a/b/c etc) seemed brighter also. Greatly enjoying your videos - informative and entertaining. Many thanks!
I can’t say I have noticed any difference in the brightness. Maybe I am just used to them

I had read a post on DistrictDave from back in September 2023 that said "Resignalling of the Piccadilly has not yet been funded, this however hasn’t prevented expenditure on new co-acting signals for sighting purposes for the 2024 Stock at nearly every signal." and wondered if further re-signaling had occurred. I also believe I saw some signals close to starter locations that are bagged and X taped. Are those part of future signaling?
@@DrJimi so my understanding is that the new signals are only co-acting signals. They are lower due to visibility issues with the new trains. Although we have not yet had a brief with regards to it all yet. My understanding is there is no funding for a new system hence why we will be driving the 24 stock manually

You'll probably find a lot of the lamps have been replaced with LED 'bulbs', although I can't confirm that. But that would explain signals appearing brighter than you remember. Even NR's semaphores have LED lamps these days

That’s to say the tunnel telephone wires and/or telephone are not working. Most have been disconnected on the pic line. Now all trains have radios and we all have hand held radios too

The line direction is very confusing at the top end. I assume you know, Dale, but not all viewers might know too, that from Holborn to Cockfosters the general alignment is south to north in reality, but it's officially termed eastbound and (when coming back) westbound, so as to match up with the rest of the Piccadilly Line. In fact the last bit of the line from Oakwood to Cockfosters bends back to the west, so an "eastbound" train is actually travelling in a westwards direction in reality on that stretch of track, and the eastbound exit from the depot is located further west than the westbound exit. (It's a bit like cricket: when you're out on the field you're "in" etc.) So in these summer evening vids a train approaching Cockfosters is heading into the sunset. When I was young the station platforms in this area were actually designated northbound and southbound (at least for passenger purposes, I don't know about drivers) but they changed that over to eastbound and westbound, oh, I think in the early 1970s. I've never been able to discover the actual date.
It can get confusing. Once you are used to it it’s not too bad.

Is there no standard as to which side the signals are positioned? Seems like they are on both the left and the right so how do you know which is for you if there are a few together at a platform end?
It’s just experience. It’s easy once you understand the track lay out

No. The clocks are generally useless on the underground
At Signal PM1 (8:12) why do there seem to be two repeaters for signal PM2? Is there any difference between the middle two aspects and the bottom two aspects?
The bottom repeater is a fog repeater. When these were installed they were used only in conditions of poor visibility and would not normally be illuminated. Nowadays they're lit all the time to try to reduce the number of SPADs hence the apparent redundancy.

Can you clarify, does the rail company you work for operate exclusively on the Piccadilly line, or do they operate other lines too? Just wondering if you have any choice or opportunity to drive other lines, or whether you'd have to change employers?
So I work for London Underground. They run all the underground lines. I could put in a transfer to a different line if I wanted too
I know it's a silly question but when you have the door open do you have it open in the tunnel
I don’t. Some times I might have it open between Hounslow and Hatton Cross but not in the tight tunnels. Too much dust

I don’t know what the plan is with the speed of the new trains. I guess the testing will help determine what they can do. Do you mean for the digital voice announcer? If so we use codes for the stations and route

A question for you, Dale. Not directly related to the video. If your duty (for example) starts with a Cockfosters -> Heathrow run, but the train you are supposed to pick up has gone out of service further up the line, due to a fault or damage, etc, what happens to you?
It depends. They may be able to give you a different train. If it’s cancelled completely then you would sit around and cover the second half ( assuming it’s the first train) if it’s the second half of a duty they may let you go home early if not needed
After watching your videos for a couple of months now (they're great, keep it up btw!) I'm still somewhat confused by the signalling. SO MANY close together and many repeaters too. I followed the railways since childhood but previously only watched "main line" videos. I kind of get why so many are necessary (mostly) but isn't it sometimes confusing, even when you have the route knowledge and experience? More so at night? What sort of block system is in use? Is there actually the concept of a home or section signal and shouldn't the "repeaters" be called distants - except for the ones that are "co-acting" such as PK.22 at the end of Oakwood southbound platform? In that case, why not just move the main signal slightly so it isn't blocked by the mirror? Some of the signals are less than a train length apart (for example as you approach Oakwood southbound at 14:30 there seem to be three in about 100m). Some have more than one repeater and some repeaters repeat more than one signal! It seems a bit disorganised to be honest. Watching them change in sequence, when several are visible clears it up a bit and is quite satisfying too. I get that you can never be TOO safe and I'm sure you all know what you're doing but it just seems overcomplicated and likely to cause confusion - and being confused even once would be too much. Couldn't it be simplified? I know the answer is - "well, they'll all be gone in a few years anyway" btw. So many questions! Don't feel obliged to answer - I know you're busy, but maybe it's something you could discuss more in future videos. Thanks again for the hard work! EDIT: the thing you said about the repeater not showing below a red signal makes perfect sense, by the way.
It's track circuit block to all intents and purposes, although I'm ashamed to admit I don't know if that term is used by London Underground. It's been a long time since there was absolute block on the Underground (though there was) and again a long time (though slightly less time if I'm not mistaken) since there were mechanical semaphore signals (although traditionally London Underground's standard shunt signals were electro-pneumatically operated, externally-floodlit semaphore discs). Without getting too deep into the weeds no there aren't home and section signals in the sense of modern absolute block signals. Drivers tend to talk about home and starting signals in relation primarily to station platforms. Home signals are on approach to stations and the station starting signal is the one at the end of the station. This does have historical precedent on the main line as well. On the signaller's side of things the labels home and starting (home signals being in the rear and starting signals in advance) are used to name signals in traditional LU signal cabins with short lever electro-mechanical power frames, often I would say with reference to the station rather than the box itself. Names like 'junction home' are also found. But I mean to go into details would fill a rather turgid chapter of a somewhat specialist book! No the repeaters are not called distants on LU. LU did have distants but that's another topic. Note on the main line where 2-aspect signalling is used the distant is often given the suffix 'R' and may be called a repeater. Compare also the term 'banner repeater'. It is a bit off how many co-acting signals LU has sprouted in recent years. Obviously a big factor behind the ones in these videos is the new trains and while the old trains are still in use you have to have both, but in other cases it will be because there's no good compromise allowing the signal to be seen close-up and far away. I imagine they often spring up if a signal gets SPADed a lot. Remember while moving a signal from one side of the line to another, say, might be possible, you can't necessarily just move it forwards or backwards a few feet as LU overlaps are precisely calculated to allow the tripcock to stop a train from line speed within the overlap. You don't have a standard 200 yard overlap. The signals' positions are very finely calculated. The large number of signals is to allow trains to get close to stations and junctions. They don't put 3 signals on the approach to Oakwood to be super duper safe in case the driver misses the first two. They put 3 signals to allow a train get close to the junction and follow a departing train to maximise capacity on a very intense metro service without compromising safety. There used to be a lot more. King's Cross westbound used to have 7 signals on the approach to the station. They've actually simplified it from its heyday a lot. But no, it's not confusing really. It's actually a very simple red/green, stop/go system, with the addition of a yellow to tell you to put the brake in, there's a red ahead. There's actually not that much more to it than that when you get down to it. If you see a red you stop. If you see a yellow, you start slowing. If you see a green, crack on. It's great to know the details of what repeaters repeat what signals to get the best out of the system and to give the smoothest possible ride and the best possible journey times. That's being a professional. And when you go up and down the same line day in day out you pick this sort of thing up pretty quick and it can really help you make the most of the signalling and avoid traps all the rest of it. But a lot of thought is put into the design of the signalling system so that you don't really NEED to know oh that green there that's actually a repeater and repeats the next two signals. You just need to see green and keep on driving. Similarly you don't NEED to know, oh that yellow, that actually repeats the next two signals on this line but also the next signal is a junction signal and I could be going left and so it also repeats the next signal on the line on the left as well and then the one after that that's .... ... ... All you really NEED to do is see yellow and start slowing down.

The clocks only give you a rough idea. So many are incorrect. There is time built in to the timetable that if you are a few minuets late you can make it up

QUESTION....IF you get a warning that a set of doors has not closed, is it possible for the train to move off or is there a safety system built in that won't allow the train to drive in that situation ?
@@davesnelling3812 both. So there is a switch that would allow you to move the train with doors open. However there are rules around using it
