10:30 at night coming home from work. No front brake because the cable had popped out. I was prepared to take it into a shop tomorrow morning but instead I'm glad I stumbled across this! Plain and simple, fantastic!
Dude! I have had THE HARDEST time trying to fix this on my bike. you saved me and my wallet. I was just gonna buy whole new stuff. So simple yet sooo very frustrating lol
I did exactly what you did. But why doesn my brake lever not come back when I release it? And what's the purpose of the screw that is located opposite to the lever?
The spring to return your lever back to its normal position is actually on the brakes themselves at the wheel. If this is broken (never seen this) or you cable may not be running smoothly in the cable housing which is more likely. Check that the spring is properly resting on the tabs to open the brake calipers. Sometimes the cable becomes frayed and sticks in the housing or in the past I have seen rusted housings. Modern (Last 30 years:) cables are not made to rust anymore. Send me a picture if you like.
Not sure what that screw is for that is opposite the lever. I think you can adjust the brake lever resting position to have a shorter pull. This could be for people/kids with smaller hands??
@@powellsj1 i managed to solve the problem. I substituted the cable because it was rusty and then I bought a new brake lever because the spring of the old one was broken, that s why it didn't come back. Now the new one comes back when I release it. Then I have also changed the pads ,, I am satisfied. I think I ll also replace the brake on the rear wheel
I did try by myself wouach!! before going to the repair I check here and it took me 2 minutes to fix it! Hey Women 70 y/o can do it when it is so well explain Thank you😀
My cable is all seized up I cant figure out of theres a way for me to just unseize it I have been pulling and tugging on it and nothing's working even used some pliers
Make sure it is disconnected on the wheel and see if the cable slides in and out easily. You can oil the cable by using a rubber band with a baggy on the top end filling it with motor oil and letting soak over night. Capture the dripping with a cup on the bottom. Let me know if this makes sense. See similar to: ua-cam.com/video/ksiQIvNIPRw/v-deo.html
OMG thank you thank you thank you for this video! I was trying to insert the cable inside the handle forever and was obvioulsy doing it wrong. I can't believe it was so simple. I'm now mad I wasted so many hours.
It seems to have only made matters worse for me 😞 the frame cable some how ended up created slack so I have to take it to a bike shop for repairs. Glad it worked for other though.
with my brakes my barrel doesn’t fit in the holder and it tilts sideways causing it to be loose and not work aswell even though it was fitting when it camw
@@Snigger-b6z is it inside the cable housing on the caliper side? Some times cables fray and are next to impossible to get out. You could cut the housing back a bit if you have enough length.
Thank you I have been riding with this problem be half brakes for 3 days. Figured out the problem but couldn’t get that cable to stay put. Very helpful.
Thank you for this vid, I've been stopping by using my trainers!! Now my trainers have turned onto slippers!! I will try and see if I can fix my brakes now. Your video seems simple but I dont know if I can do it but I will try 😊
I was fixing my back brake today and the black screw which is on the top of your thumb in the video broke. The brake is loose now. What it is it’s name and how to get a replacement. Thank you
I believe that is brake lever position screw. It would allow your brake lever to be partially pulled in if it were more comfortable for the rider. If it were screwed in a bit and it backed out or broke off it could make the brakes not "bite" with the same pull. If it broke off you may have to use vise grips or a drill and an easy out to get it out. I have seen it called the grub screw or "reach adjustment screw".
Is the spring on at the brake caliper on the wheel part of the brake? Should be a wire with a loop that tries to open the brake pads. If that is off, the cable will not co.e back.www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=51010&attribute=120094&gclid=CjwKCAiAs8acBhA1EiwAgRFdw228bQ8egSY1dr9_8sLbvII6LXtVC0TS3ZWW5EjhzKoPbH4N9WKRYRoC2sIQAvD_BwE
You could take the brake pads off and sand them with 250 grit sand paper and replace them. Squeaking comes from a sticking of the pads to the rim and them breaking loose causing a vibration.
How to replace the cable is the correct title. Not how to "fix" the lever.

Great to hear!
Ugh my brakes are hydraulically operated I wish it were this easy
Thanks for the video I can fix my back brake now
the wire that ur using extends when u pull it. mine doesn’t extend when being pulled. is there a fix to this?
maybe because its too tight. try adjusting the break cable on your disc break
Yes, try adjusting at the wheel as suggested by MaL3K_XD
@ 1:22 "what did you just undo?"..... *No answer* .... "Just like that"... "Oh..."....
What a great explanation
is it ok without the lock on?
Cuz my bike doesnt have it and still works
Yes..it's ok..just keeps it from randomly moving around and getting out of adjustment
Saved me so much timeee thanks!!!!
Glad it helped!
Oh my God I think this fixes my bike
Any malayali
U might have saved me money

i cant brake my bike pls help me
What is the specific problem? The lever or the calipers not closing.
powellsj1 hey for me my cable won’t come out as it is inside a bit and I don’t know how to get it out (I have bmx)

Bro i cannot get out the screw the string is stuck inside plzz help
Is it rusted? May have to remove the cable from the other end at the calipers
THANK YOU SO MUCH
Thanks so much
My brakes was working fine but after replacing the mechanical brakes with hydraulic brakes the front brakes lever won't retract all the way back
Probably a spring on the lever of the caliper. New spring maybe or not install correctly.
Well I feel dumb 😂😂😂
Thank you so much
Why it doesn't work on my bicycle
Please send pics of your brake handle.
My leveler won’t move so I take it apart
@@rosannedooley6659 take the lever apart?
My cable doesn’t pull out enough
May have to remove the cable end at the brake caliper on the wheel or adjust the caliper adjuster as far out as you can and you should get more cable.
Its a good video but it doesnt really help and i think we cant fix it becuase my friend handle broke in half so we might need to buy a new one
Yeah, sounds like you need a new one. Thanks for your response.
Lol well it won't fix that.

I need some help though my back tire is locked like it won't move but the front tire does
Your brake pads may be touching your wheel
Send a picture of your wheel and the brakes and we can figure it out
