The Mercedes-Benz W140 S-Class Diesel Was Over-Sized, Over-Engineered, Over-Budget, and Awesome

- SOLD The W140 was a transition car for Mercedes-Benz - from the old nuts and bolts, wood and leather, old world craftsmanship to the quest for the highest tech, build quality, and equipment content ever put on a car. The Lexus LS was a new threat from Japan, and BMW was closing in from the side with a very popular 7-Series. Mercedes-Benz wanted to answer them by creating the best car in the world - enter the W140.
Inside was the old and familiar Mercedes-Benz nuts-and-bolts engineering - rich leathers, glossy wood, expensive soft materials, and controls and layouts that would be familiar to any loyal Benz owner - but this belied an incredible array of cutting edge technology and luxury items unseen in any prior car. Soft close doors, power center-view mirror, electronically retractable rear fender markers, electronic dual side climate control, ASR, the first CAN BUS system, double-pane windows, and much more.
While all of this provided a level of luxury and sophistication not seen before, it also provided complication and high repair costs - a mechanic friend of mine took to calling it "The Grand Mercedes," because everything one might have to do it would cost more than a thousand bucks.
To some, this car is a masterpiece - to others, an over-complicated nightmare. I've always been a fan of them, if only just because it's a car I grew up with, and admired long before I could afford one. When it was current, few cars had the kind of impact a big S-Class did when pulling up somewhere, so you at least got that for your money.

“Marco painted the car for a bag of coke and whiskey.” (Bill, 2020) Classic 😂😂😂😂
Got a good laugh out of that one.
I love his sense of humor
That's my type of friend
He is SHADY to the bone! 🤣🤣🤣
Everyone: The sky is falling and the world is ending.
Bill: Good Morning!
Alfred Valrie i literally died and brought back to life from that comment. Bill is in heaven right now lol
Omar Avicenna 🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
Life is a journey..
From one great beverage to the last.. 🍺
If the World is ending this is the Diesel TANK that I wanna be in!!!
I would still buy this year model Mercedes over the newer models.
I got a classic 95 Mercedes for sale 3500 OBO, it's clean gd condition
lele g still got it?
lele g still got it?
I would too.
"Overengineered because the engineers were running the company but it drove the accountants batshit crazy finally they mounted a coup and took over the company" LOL
Correct.
The W140's R&D budget was $1 BILLION.
The budget for the W220 was half that. That's why the W220, W221 had/have so many issues.
I had a:
2005 S-430 AMG, repeated issues with ABC suspension systems, dash went out, keyless go buttons fell off, a/c fan motor went out.
Then went to the 2008 S-550 4MATIC AMG. PANORAMIC sunroof issues, did not opt for the ABC suspension, brakes dics not big enough for such a heavy car.
Now I have a W222.
2015 S-63 AMG Sedan.
Love it, but 21.1gal fuel tank is TOO SMALL for such a large engine. I miss the 26.4gal from the W140.
Senior Benz designer Bruno Sacco was asked:
“Is there a model you designed that you're unhappy with?”
👉 Answer: “The W140 S-class from the early 1990s, because it is four inches too tall”

Why are you not so active lately ? make more review, you are doing them like a proffesional, you talk all about the history the extras the other factors going into making the car or it's prons and cons, and every detail in general. I love it. Make more please. Don't stop
facts i love all the nitty gritty Details
Bill = Legend
Perhaps some of the best "running commentary" I've ever heard. God I love this guy!
loughed my ass off. covid was tough though . . . nb. vienna

The W140 diesel puts out 150hp, im pretty sure. At least in Europe.
True and later diesel had 3L and 177hp.
315hp was the power of V8 gasoline engine in S500 W140.
That 350 number was probably the torque spec.
Stimpy&Ren Which year and engine would you recommend for the W140?
@@NorthernUtahDashcam 91 and 92 for power, 94-98 for less troubles
“Featuring Mild Anger and a Bald Eagle Flyover” 😂😂
OH BABY!!! I spotted those months ago when you showed us a sneak peek at upcoming cars. OH HOW I HAVE WAITED FOR THIS VIDEO!!!! I have two of these - cant wait to hear your take!
Very interesting video as always. Nice to learn about the history of the old diesel engines. That painter did a hell of a job. Shines like a mirror !
Long time fan here, you never disappoint Bill!
Best UA-cam dissertations anywhere,Bill is my Psychiatrist, absolutely keeps me sane until the next video drops
Correction: the last Bruno Sacco’s s class design is the w220, not w140
yes you're right. Bruno Sacco's cars *-* i love them all xD
Maybe we're better off forgetting that.
Hi Bill, your as allways interesting vlogs are not only interesting and informative but are a great way to pass the time of day while we here in NZ are in a total 24 hour lockdown, please keep them coming. We need 4 weeks worth,.Cheers Kevin.
Hey Bill! Love your commentary as always. That Denis Leary voice just kills me. I bet you’ve seen some major “Snow” days back in your past!🤪
This guy needs his own TV show, great narrating by far.
Your sense of humor is legendary! I love it!!!!
You were obviously traumatized as a child by Hitchcock’s “The Birds”.
Yes, it's not the first time the birds are mentioned in a video. :)
Werent we all?
I can relate to that too....hate the bastards.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What is your problem with birds? Don't get it.
You should be worried if they were NOT there.
Europe is missing at least 40% of its birds due to man treating nature wrong.
I really appreciate the time and effort you put into your video reviews. The commentary keeps me on the lookout for more videos. Thank you.
No way that you just uploaded my favorite Mercedes ever made
Bill, you should have a podcast!! The wisdom and humor should be front and center.
Hey Bill, thanks for doing the videos, really enjoying them while I'm stuck in the house. Could you do a video on your 2008 CLS550? It's such an unusual design. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
Love the way you present your merchandise. Beautifully done. Your phone maybe also over engineered for you. As you don't seem to use the mute function when making videos.
You're the best, Bill. Thank God I found your channel during this quarantine. It's given me so much joy while I've been trapped in my tiny condo. Have you done a review of your Silverado or the Datsun? I know you're doing reviews for the dealership but how about taking a request this one time?
Auto Europa Naples Thank you!
When we see your videos, we can pick up the popcorn, because it will be a delicious moment of fun:)))!
Very good vid. THX keep doing more, I love watching them
A tour of Naples would be great, esp. with your insights. Was thinking about getting a house down there.
Gorgeous car. Wish I was in the market. German diesels are awesome!
“Weird, biodegradable engine harness” omg I thought I was gonna swallow my f/n tongue! 😂
the thing is, that is true, they made those from 1993
My favorite S class of all time. Especially the coupe versions 😍
This is a good series. Entertaining and informative. Keep it up. My wife thinks Bill sounds like John Waters.
Bill, love Your humor! Keep on the good work! May Your toilet paper never run out! ;-)
Yes Please! We'd all love a Naples tour!!!!
Can listen to you for hours!
Another awesome review Bill. You are my favorite dealer review channel. Dead honest content and true car enthusiasts #automotiveporn. Stay safe
I have 1993 W140 !! Love it!!!👌👍😎
Love watching your videos even though I'm not in the market for a car have my 2015 s550 and 1997 SL500 but your videos.are so entertaining 😂 I gotta look you up next time I'm near Tampa
Awesome pair! Your newer S Class is the perfect compliment to the 'chisled from granite' R129 SL.
Naples is 166 miles from Tampa which would be a joyous drive for you in either of your two cars!
I love how you drove to the local MB dealership, and hit that u-turn
Bill, watching one of your videos for the first time and based on your humour, I subscribed instantly. Putting the phone on Airplane Mode would've stopped incoming phone calls, anyway, this video is terrific and man, did you have me howling with laughter as you're FUNNY! "Switchblades, coke, narcotics, handguns" 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
Me, I'm afraid of the 140 as I wanted one either the 500 coupe or the gas 6 cylinder version sedan as I'm very apprehensive of the diesel and I LOVE diesels (I had an '85 300CD & '83 Audi 5000 turbodiesel), but this engine has been throwing rods since the 126 chassis 1987 350SDL (I believe that it's the same POS engine). Besides, a friend with Mercedes-Benz advised me to stay away from the 140 as they had problems with that chassis. I had a 1986 420SEL and that 126 chassis was probably the last great bank vault designed S-Class as every S-Class since the 126 has been questionable if not straight up junk. After 37 years of German cars, I'm done with them and ready for the reliable trouble-free (comparatively speaking) LEXUS. Good and funny review!
My rx350 vvti bolts backed out at 117k miles and even though it fit the reasoned for the recall, Lexus said my vin wasn’t on the bulletin. Goes to show, they are all pos.
@@bhigdaddymark did you read what I said? I had to put in another engine because the timing chain came off the guides due to the faulty oem vvti bolts . Never a toyota again.
@sebastian romero
Damn, my apologies Sebastian as apparently my level of comprehension momentarily failed, so I deleted my idiotic comment. As I did say, "Less to zero aggravation" as compared to the money pit crap from Germany currently. I've never owned a Porsche, but a buddy of mine did (a Cayenne) and it nearly bankrupted him so he got rid of it and bought a Nissan SUV and has had zero problems with it. It's the luck of the draw I guess. We MUST remember that everything man makes breaks requiring maintenance hence EVERY car manufacturer having a service department from Rolls-Royce down to VW including the make you replaced your Lexus (or Toyota if you're not in the USA market) with. I'm sorry that you experienced that, good luck to you.
TOUR of Naples, Bill. Great idea, I have not been there in more than ten years. Maybe you could point out some of the better barbecue places. I can't remember which one was our favourite
Thank you Bill, other than showing us a beautiful gem of a car, your outlook on current events are awesome.
What killed Princess Diana and two of her companions was foolishly not fastening their seat/shoulder belts. The sole survivor of Diana's accident was the man in the front passenger seat, who had buckled up. Her W140 Mercedes smashed head-on into a concrete abutment at high speed, obviously a devastating accident condition. That the man who buckled up survived at all (and fully recovered) is testimony to the amazing structural integrity of the W140. But in a high speed accident, the safest and best engineered car in the world cannot save people who don't bother to buckle up.
😂 love your show man!
great review from my favourite s class👍🏻
Great review, Bill. I love the 140s.
We always called this W140 "
Panzer “!! - It's really a tank😎
By the way, it was not the most beautiful one but one of best of all S'classes. Step right in, turn the key and it brings you to the end of the world. Absolutely a remarkable vehicle!!
Thanks for showing and Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹👍
Take care.
Bill will do these videos until the day he passes. He’s a crank. And a legend.
I had a 1997 S320 LWB and LOVED it...except for the biodegradable wiring.
And here I am, watching this from Lithuania, and yes crime bosses from era long gone and thankfully forgotten indeed liked these, especially the 600SEL, which had a nickname 'The Hog'.
I remember getting a car magazine when the W140 came out in 1991 and being completely blown away by it. It was one of my dream cars for the next 20 years. If reliability of an old German car concerns you, get a post-facelift Lexus LS430 Ultra Luxury. It's basically a Japanese take on the same concept.
Yes definitely so the Naples tour, possibly in a convertible!
Hey Bill. Do you know if that oxidizer trap you mentioned can be removed or disabled?
I had a 85 123 turbo diesel years ago and loved it.
I'm in Vegas and have a 2001 e320 now. Black on black. Not a good combo in this climate. Wish you'd done better filming the eagle but you were not prepared so what the heck.
Maybe you can get a bidet installed in your house so you won't ever have to stand in line for tp. Lol
dude, you are great :D
I actually like it when you talk about other stuff than cars 😂
I love Mercedes S-Class.
The W220 was the last of Bruno Sacco's design.
The toilet paper, the bald eagles, Ozzy, Mariah, Celine, the phone and the bats . .😂😂😂😂 god, this is a classic !! and , yes, it was a weird and crazy time. god bless You. N.B. / Vienna A.
Would love to see a tour of Naples
I think you got the spec sheet for another motor... The 603.971 in that car only kicks out 148 hp. Torue is 228 ft/lbs. The later multivalve 606 diesels make a lot more power.
The 603.97 never had a DPF / Trap Oxidizer. That was only on the 85-86 CARB spec cars, and 87 for all cars.
Nobody knows why the 603.97s bent rods. What we do know is the late engines have thicker, heavier rods, oil cooling channels in the pistons (like the 3.0L engines). It affected a lot of the cars... probably 50%! The motors that didn't have problems though ran for a lot of miles. The 603.970 in my car blew up around 120,000 miles.
Just curious: If you floor the go pedal, without pushing the kickdown switch, what RPM does it shift at?
If you want more info on this engine, look here: archive.org/details/9091MBTurboDiesels
What a beautiful car.
Seems like the web link is not working. I love this year of the S class, built like a tank and lots of style.
Alright. I like this guy!
Hello from Dortmund Germany , I own a W210 /220 CDI since 8 years and its fantastic for long Autobahn trips ..
The Bird eyes complementary in warm up !A head way on
Such a badass ride
*The 90s MBs are some of my favorite models of all time..*
Love the humor 😄😄
What a brilliant video
As a Dual Citizen - US and Canada - I am of the view that Bill is a national treasure to all of us.
I would love to see a tour of Naples!
"Riding in Cars with Bill". I'd watch that!!!
Bill please do review on Coupe of this W140 - the C140 SEC / S-Class Coupe / CL (3 names for same shape)
The engine you displayed is OM 603 D35 A with 12 valves (Single cam - OHC) 3500cc. This engine was rated from MB at 148hp 310Nm.
His successor was OM 606 D 30 LA 24 valves ( dual overhead cams - DOHC ) 3000cc rated by MB at 174hp 330Nm. The only way you can get 300hp from 603 or 606 is by contacting DieselPumpUk 😅
I had two of this model, The best car i ever had !
I would totally use the glove compartment tray to roll up a joint or blunt
Nice review Bill
Hey Bill - fellow sales person here (not from Canada) - you need to tell your customers when you do your videos - and for them not to call you during them! LOL!
I love all of the S Class from the 560 SEL unto now.
8:23 I don't know where you got your numbers from, but this engine made 110 kW, which is 150 HP. The successor, the 300 Turbodiesel, made 177 HP.
There is no way that car put out 300+HP. The Gas V8 in an S500 was 315 MAYBE! haha
Professional pilot and professional drinker. Sounds like a bad combination!
No sounds like a great friend, good times and great vacations
The ring tone of the phone is perfect with whisky and cigarettes
One of my favorite things ever is probably a diesel S class
For me, ANY Mercedes-Benz diesel. I had a 1985 300CD that was absolutely wonderful. I loved the 1986 300SDL that even better.
Tank on wheels 💪
Bill, if you press the volume buttons or power button once it mutes the ringtone when someone is calling. Easy and swift to do through the pocket. Loving the videos! P.s. When i come to the states to see relatives im coming to waste your time and i know how much you hate it haha
Is that a 4th gen 4Runner on lift in background? For sale?
This I think was a mercedes you either loved or hated. A little strange in the styling department.
But with the cosmetic changes made to this one for sale, it looks much better than stock.
very nice w140 car delivery from Bangladesh
Do a review on the Silverado
Love the fantastic, John Waters level narration and humor...chipper Canadian gangsters sharing the back seat...lol.
LOL John Waters narration - perfect description!! I knew I liked this guy's videos for a reason, now I know why!
Dude, it perfectly acceptable to not talk the entire time. You can’t make the comment about how good the engine sounds then proceed to talk over the sound of the engine to the point to where I never actually heard the engine
man i love these cars. especially the diesel. roadburner.
Agreed. My favorite is the 300SD (W116 or W126)
I own a W222, and I still miss the W140, it was way more comfortable even though there was no massaging seats :)
I think that it is Bills imperfections that keep us all glued to his reviews. Who cares if he gets this and that wrong like HP figures and my have un-PC views on major issue and is a misogynist - We all got faults and this is light entertainment as well as informative. Good balance in my mind. A tour of Naples without the traffic would be great - didn't get there this month as usual and miss the place - got to wait til October now and hope the panic is over by then.
I agree with your statements, Jon Boy, 110 % 1 million thumbs up!
I really don’t think Bill is a Misogynist! (And I am a woman with the W140). I’ve watched quite a few of his reviews and i really don’t get that feeling from him. I think he’s hilarious and is very very different in his style of car reviews that is intriguing and definitely keeps me interested! If I got the idea of mysogyny from him, I’d never have watched as many reviews as I have and would have been LONG GONE…
I saw a 92 or 93 s class diesel for sale on my local craigslist with 530,000 miles on it a few years ago
Bill I can't believe you came for Celine like that! She's the best.
Olá, sou do Brasil, e muito fã do seu canal
Very beauty full door
Ahh, the Diana model. Perfect.
