  • In grateful memory to Gary Brooker (1945-2022)
"The Angler" originally was released on Gary's second solo album LEAD ME TO THE WATER (1982).
This live version was recorded for Rockpalast TV at the Markthalle in Hamburg, Germany, 18 February 1983.
    Line up:
    Gary Brooker - piano, voc
    Tim Renwick - guitar, voc
    John Gibblin - bass, voc
    Tim Cross - synth., voc
    Henry Spinetti - drums
This 1983 Rockpalast performance is the only known gig of the Gary Brooker Band. An edited version of the concert was broadcasted in the same year on German TV. From what I know, The Angler never was played in a Procol Harum concert, but Gary guested on this piece with the Palers Band in Zoetermeer, Netherlands in 2016.

I have not yet recovered. There will be no Procol Harum tour. I shall never hear Mr Brooker with his beautiful voice and witty between song banter. His energy, so positive and so infectious. His music transcending. I still cry every day. Thank you for making life, so much better.

I am glad that I got to see Procol Harum 4 times live with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. A very hugh loss for the world of music. May Gary Brooker rest in peace. Cheers! ✌️

It's like losing a very close friend.I also miss him knowing how hard he wanted to go back on tour after the tour cancellations because of Covid, but then illness and cancer took him.

It is a full month now since Gary has gone, and it's only in these past three days that his passing has struck me with the greatest sadness. Even after a month of reflection upon his career, no tears of loss for his passing -- and gratitude for his life -- occurred *until* it was seeing this specific video tonight, and hearing this song for the first time. [Thank you, H. Braunschmidt!]
Seeing Gary in his prime of long-ago, so youthful and intensely energetic, plus the unexpected goodness of this song, and his musical intensity toward the latter part of it that did it for me. And so, tears happened.
The culmination of this song in its last three verses (starting at 3:42) is so wonderful.

Gary (2010) on the writing of this song (from the Procol Harum site):
"I was a fly fisherman, and went fishing for steelhead up in Oregon. And it actually took me two weeks to finally land one, and it was a beauty.
And I managed to put it back, as well, so it lived to swim again, and I just photographed it and weighed it and things. Took some good pictures and somebody up there made me a model of it in the end.
But I then went back euphorically to these friends' house I was staying with, and nobody was in. It was like 4 in the afternoon.
So I went and bought a six-pack of malt liquor, which is like strong beer, really. And I thought, well, when they come we can have a beer.
But they took so long I sat there and I had a couple of these malt liquors, and I started to think about the two weeks that I just spent all over Oregon and Washington in search of this elusive steelhead, and the adventures I'd had on the way.
And they took a real long time to come home, these people, and I was sitting there for about 2 or 3 hours.
I finished the six-pack and finished the song."

Gary Brooker could have reigned supreme on the American Country-Western charts of the 80's and 90s. Listen to this song. If you are familiar with the.C&W music of the time you'll catch my drift.

I hear a bit of country music influence here, as well as a touch of Zydeco. I do like country music too. This performance is great. Cheers!

As a obsessed procol fan I got all 3 of Gary's solo albums the best of which is Echoes in the night. The songs were not as good as procol harum songs but there's a few songs that pass the test. Thanks for posting this was very interesting to see

    - - - - - - - - - - - -
    THE ANGLER - (full lyrics...)
    - - - - - - - - - - - -
The search is over, the Battle done,
The Fish is beaten, the Angler's won.
But simple stories make longer tales,
No consolation, if he had failed.
Through wind and desert, Blackberry Hole,
Coyote and rattler had made him old.
It ain't easy, it's on the borderline,
'Tween health and madness, the way he bides his time.
They nailed 'em on a deadline,
    This is where they lie.
Where the water's fast, the current strong,
    They're eye-to-eye. I see why
He spends his time, on and on.
Down foaming rapids, into the deep black hole,
Through thorns and rockslides for to reach his goal.
And golden chances, he let 'em slip away,
Or was he waiting for the Judgement Day?
    CHORUS:
    Fin-to-fin in every log jam,
    This is where they lie,
Where the water's fast, the current strong,
    They're eye-to-eye. I see why
He spend his Time on his own.
    [REPEAT chorus after instrumental]
On the thirteenth morning, when the Sun was high,
Though he tricked that Steelhead, saw the line go tight.
Two spirits fighting, two creatures bold,
Bad luck and trouble had finally lost their hold.
They nailed 'em on a deadline,
    This is where they lie.
Where the water's fast, the current strong,
    They're eye-to-eye. I see why
He spends his time on his own.
    Fin-to-fin in every log jam,
    This is where they lie.
Where the water's fast, the current strong,
    They're eye-to-eye.
My, oh my, what fun to be on your own.

Gisteren bij toeval op cd dit opgetreden afgespeeld. Wat een vakman. Maar nam destijds wel bewust afstand van zijn Procol verleden.
