The Statlers were my favorite country group! I miss them so much. They have SO MANY great songs. Elizabeth, My Only Love, Silver Medals and Sweet Memories, We Got Paid By Cash, Am I Crazy, Susan When She Tried, Bed of Roses, You've Been Like A Mother To Me, Too Much on My Heart, Count on Me, The Best I Know How, Holding On, Music My Memories and You, Tomorrow Never Comes, Class of 57, Your Picture in the Paper, More Like My Daddy Than Me, Forever, Is it Your Place or My Mine, ... ... and c that is just a tiny fraction of what they've done. They remain "The Entertainers On and Off the Record" and "The Most Awarded Act in the History of Country Music."
The Statler Brothers are from Staunton Virginia .in the mountains .The bass is Harold, baritone is Harold's brother Don, then Phil, and last Jimmy Fortune.
All native Virginians, the Statler Brothers were absolutely unique. Only two of them, Harold and Don Reid, were actually Brothers- and none of them were named Statler! They are regarded as the most awarded act in the history of country music. They retired from the road in 2002. They were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008. So much more that I could tell you about these guys, but save to say it's no wonder they are loved the world over.
A very nice reaction 🪖! More Than A Name On The Wall was released as the third single from The Statler Brothers' 1989 album: The Statlers' Greatest Hits. It was written by Jimmy Fortune and John Rimel. It was produced by Jerry Kennedy. The song reached #6 on the Country chart. This performance is from The Statler Brothers' TV show on TNN. The song is about a mother visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC, to see her son's name. Lyrics 🗒: I saw her from a distance As she walked up to the wall In her hand she held some flowers As her tears began to fall She took out pen and paper As to trace her memories She looked up to heaven And the words she said were these: She said, Lord, my boy was special And he meant so much to me! You know I'd love to see him Just one more time you see All I have are the memories And the moments to recall! So, Lord, could you tell him He's more than a name on a wall? She said he really missed his family Being home on Christmas Day And he died for God and country In a place so far away I remember just a little boy Playing war since he was 3! But Lord, this time I know He's not coming home to me She said, Lord, my boy was special And he meant so much to me! You know I'd love to see him But I know it just can't be! So I thank you for my memories And the moments to recall! But Lord, could you tell him He's more than a name on a wall? O Lord, could you tell him He's more than a name on a wall? The Statler Brothers Info 📰: The Statler Brothers, sometimes simply referred to as The Statlers, were a Country music, Gospel, and vocal group from Staunton, Virginia. The quartet was formed in 1955 performing locally, and from 1964 to 1972, they sang as opening act and backup singers for Johnny Cash. The discography of The Statler Brothers consists of 37 studio albums, 18 compilation albums, three live albums, 83 singles, and 14 music videos. The group debuted on the music charts in 1965 with "Flowers On The Wall", a #2 Billboard Hot Country Songs and #4 Hot 100 hit. Although they never made Top 40 on the Hot 100 again, The Statler Brothers continued to chart on Hot Country Songs until 1990, reaching #1 with "Do You Know You Are My Sunshine" in 1978, "Elizabeth" in 1984, and "My Only Love" and "Too Much On My Heart", both in 1985. Originally performing Southern Gospel music at local churches, the group billed themselves as The Four Star Quartet, and later The Kingsmen. In 1963, when the song: "Louie Louie", by the Garage Rock band also called The Kingsmen became famous, the group elected to bill themselves as The Statler Brothers. Despite the name, only two members of the group, Don Reid and Harold Reid, were actual brothers and no member had the surname of Statler. The group actually named themselves after a brand of facial tissue they had noticed in a hotel room- they later quipped that they could just as easily have named themselves "The Kleenex Brothers". Don Reid sang lead, Harold Reid sang bass, Phil Balsley sang baritone and Lew DeWitt sang tenor and was the guitarist before being replaced due to ill health by Jimmy Fortune in 1982. The band's style was closely linked to their Gospel roots. "We took Gospel harmonies", said Harold Reid, "and put them over in Country music". Most of their albums contain at least one Gospel song, and they produced several containing only Gospel songs. They also recorded a tribute song to The Blackwood Brothers, who influenced their music. The song: "We Got Paid By Cash", was written by The Statler Brothers as a tribute to Johnny Cash, who discovered and mentored them. The group disbanded and retired after completing a farewell tour on October 26, 2002. Phil Balsley and Don Reid continue to reside in Staunton, Virginia, as did Harold Reid until his passing in April 2020. Jimmy Fortune, though, relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where he continues his music career as a solo artist, having released eight albums under his own name. The Statler Brothers remain one of the most awarded acts in the history of country music. The show's theme music is an instrumental of "The Class Of '57," one of The Statler Brothers' biggest hits as performed by the Bill Walker Orchestra, which along with The Statler Brothers' band, provided all the music for the show.
