Sketching Figures, Perspective, and Panels with David Finch
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 чер 2024
- David Finch gives an essential overview on how to sketch comic panels. His demo shows how he uses simple shapes and basic perspective on a small layout to plan a full comic page. At this stage of the process, the focus is on mapping out the broad story visually without getting stuck in the details. By starting with a “rough in” an artist can easily adjust any layout issues, making sure the characters and setting are proportionate and unified before moving forward with the page.

Hey! We want to give you a chance to learn how to make your own comic pages so we’ve got a special discount code on David’s course for ya. Save 15% with code LAYOUT15 that’s good through March 4th - proko.com/comicpage
February doesn't have 31 days.
Well how would that change anything by the way? Will you still expect the code to work after the 29th? Or does your IQ help in understanding it is until the end of February? SMH@@joeleboeuf
that part confused me though. lol@@joeleboeuf
@@joeleboeufyou're right 😅 we've updated it to March 4th
@@ProkoTV That's better.
Just what I needed! Well, not neccessary for comics, but for storyboarding panels for game cutscenes (maybe it could be a tutorial video, too?). Thank you so much for all these tutorials, Proko and David! I've been watching you both for years.
Glad they help!
Thats what im trying to get into! 😃 I really need to get it in my head that its okat for the first pass to be this loose looking.
David is a living legend
Proko is just damn amazing , im becoming a successful tattoo artist because of your guys help in my artistry
Way to go!
The formatting advice helps a lot, keep up the good work to both David and proko.
Thanks!
Another cool video from Dave
He's a great teacher and artist!
Amazing work Dave! What an amazing and super helpful video!
Thanks Proko and Dave! I love the way Dave breaks down composition and perspective, he really simplifies it so you can apply it with good practice.
I love your videos, they have been helping me out with lots of my artwork 🧡🧡🧡
I really like David's lessons, so good! also the criminal's voice sounds so funny, haha
Voilà!
Nicely done David.
Bord On!
Respecting the 180 line of action all the way.
Excellent Lesson!
What great timing
Thanks for the upload!! I *really* enjoyed this one! Definitely going to reference this with my future sketches!! 🤩
Amazing job 👍 proko !
Omg proko I love you. I've been on a crazy David finch bender!. His perspective vids are the 💣
Agreed! Dave's the best!

Yeah we just noticed that. We can't update the video but the promo is good through March 4th
Thank you!
I plan on making my own webcomic, no-one has helped with perspective and composition as much as David Finch has, proko too. I don't how to explain it but i understand the fundamentals when i watch him work. I'm thinking of saving up for a course on Proko.
man was all about the knife😆. i love this vid it was really helpful

We have a playlist of lessons about making comics. Hope they help!

I love these guys
I love this so much, as an aspiring comic artist this is very helpful... But is there also a chance we get a future series aimed at manga style comics?
That's definitely something we'd like to do in the future and plan on.
We'll announce that whenever it's ready!
When exactly does February 31st take place?
Right around March 2nd lol
What size are you using for your rough thumbnails? Thanks for sharing! 🤘
epic :O
I'm a simple man...
I see David Finch drawing...
I get the spiral notebook and ballpoint pen and get to work👁️🫦👁️
It's the morally correct thing to do! lol
What kind of pencil do you use ? Great video I like it
David uses 2mm Staedtler 2H leads with a Staedtler Mars 780 2mm drop clutch
"Boom, come on" best dialogue ever
After you do the thumbnails, do you enlarge them and trace over for final board?
Yep! Depending on if people are working digitally or what their personal preference is, some artists will also "thumbnail" on the larger size comic board with blocky sketches.
But traditionally, this was a process of sometimes photocopying the thumbnail to larger scale or otherwise reproducing the thumbnail at a larger size on the final drawing board.
@@ProkoTV thanks
I would be interested to know the belgian method of comics, the likes of Uderzo (asterix ) , herge (tintin) , Blake and mortimer 's Edgar p Jacob's etc ... expecting asterix ..what was Uderzo"s method .
Hello I bought the course for David Finch. I was wondering if I can write to him and ask a few questions? please
You absolutely can! There are places for you to comment in the lesson discussions. That's going to be your best place to get feedback on the course.
Finch!!!!!!!
I really like david finch style , i wonder what he can do when drawing out of it.
He really is a master at using dark values.
why your last panel isnt following your 180 degree camera movement rule ?
I like although I does use stick drawings for panels. Background does be difficult 4 me 😢. But I do my best
This question is for Antonio because he is such a great teacher! So I have this huge drawing problem - I cannot draw a straight line. Or even a curved line. My angles NEVER end up how I want and my lines are always wobbly. And I am left-handed. Is there anything that can help?
I think this may have been meant for a different lesson? This lesson is taught by David Finch.
But! There are some exercises that might help you with your lines. We have a whole video on it that will explain and show what we mean way more than we can in a comment:
ua-cam.com/video/lTslVOUJ0jI/v-deo.html
Hope that helps!
Could you make a video about drawing humans by silhoette method?
We don't have a video on using it strictly for humans but Scott Flanders' Monster Lab course is all about building up designs from basic shapes, silhouettes and carving shadow shapes.
Here's a playlist of a few lessons from that:

Oh!😮 Easy thing!😂
page design is the hardest part for me, I make so many tests I need to be more acertive like this
Yeah! Go in with a soft lead and light marks during your layout. Try placing things in the page and see if they work.
I have a sense like I have already seen this... On proko new year stream I'm sure
Possibly! This page is seen all over David Finch's course so some of the imagery could be familiar from our previous free lessons as well.
I want to see February 31st
Us too. That's when Stan says we can have the day off 😢
You know there is no Feb 31st?
Yeah that was a mistake. Promo is good through March 4th 😅
beautiful. gives me a chance first of month. awesome and thank you@@ProkoTV
Februari 31st? That's going to be a while before that happens...
I’ve never heard of 31st of February 😂
It's our secret day. Stan says that we can all take the day off that day but it never comes 😭
feb 31st?
The sketches : oooo i can actually draw this
Details : 😥😥😥😥
February 31st???
Please heart me
February 31st, huh? You do know there are only 29 days in February this year, correct?
Yep! Got you commenting! ;D
So it isn’t February 31st yet, so the discount still applies 🤣
Dang right! That day will never come!
…There’s no such date As February 31st!
February 31st is whenever you want it to be! It's an *aspirational* date.
In all seriousness, this one just slipped through QC and we've adjusted this so it lasts until March 4th.
The people responsible have been spanked and grounded for the weekend.
who says we can't read it
February 31st lol 😂
We're doing our best over here lol
Wtf is feb31
Rest assured that the Proko employee responsible has been properly punished with time in the dungeon and no dessert after dinner 💀
Yusuke Murata is better
Everyone's got artists they enjoy and that's okay!
Bien 👍 👍 👍 👍
