And to to do well academically, I need to do well on tests and exams. This goes without saying, but tests and exams cannot be aced without studying. Therefore, I choose to give it my all in my studies! It ultimately adds to my long term goal after all." This will act as your motivation to plow through each material. Additionally, set SMART goals: S - Specific; Notice how hyper specific my example above is. M - Measurable; You must be able to measure the progress towards your goal. In this case, it is scoring well on tests. A - Attainable; It must be realistically possible to do. Don't aim for the impossible, as it will lead to crushed expectations. R - Relevant; It must matter to your life. Why would your brain care about studying if it does not aid to your long term goals at all? You'd lose interest and classes will become a pain. T - Time bound; There must be a deadline for the tasks, or else you'll procrastinate and NEVER get things done. 7. Pareto Principle - 20% of the actions lead to 80% of the results. This means only about 20% of your effort matters to your overall grade. You can apply this to your studies by; a) Focusing on the material that you are weakest at. b) Doing your best to find out what exactly is going to be on the test. This way, you can allocate your time wisely during your 2 hrs of daily study (Parkinson's Law). Doing the two of these will also allow you to NOT waste time on pointless topics that don't really add much to your grade. One thing in myself, I always feel more confident in studying and feel like a sharper student in completing my tasks. Two things that I learned in this video are setting goals for my study and asking questions or looking over past papers!! Collin, my friend, Bunch of thx! A happy study from Pakistan.
Thank you sir COLLIN..... I usually believe studying for long time is the only way out but just realize "Time studying is not equal knowledge gained".The Parkinson's Law(setting goals and deadline, studying for specific hours). I did learn a lot from "Active Recall" studying with past questions is the most sophisticated weapon as a student in combination to spaced repetition wow it was just so mind-blowing. Most importantly "Fucus" staying away from distraction and to crown it all I have learnt to be goal oriented not just in my academics but in all areas of my life....I'm grateful looking forward to hearing from you again
Thanks brother I am a university student from Bangladesh. Your sharing strategy is really so much effective and I have already learned some of these strategy from reading books like "deep work ".
this video made me more excited for my next semester of university. ive been a bad student all my life , my previous semester i procrastinated every assignment and exam after i told myself "ok i have a freaking week to do this, its easy", and still magically end up in the last day or two lol. but now i realized the biggest factor was actually not taking the time to set meaningful goals, that are probably in the back of my head but not actually thinking actively about it. and the other one is definitely not having deep fast sessions, instead ive always been mid focused for longer hours, which depleted so much energy and time
legend. i need this, my GCSEs are running around the corner to break my kneecaps, im a higher tier student and take quite academic courses - i need this acedemic shi in my life. you got a sub there.
I dedicate four hours to my studies daily, allocating two hours before class [4am - 6am] and another two hours before bedtime [5pm - 8pm]. This approach has proven highly effective for me. In the previous semester, I achieved reasonable results, with a 94% score in applied mathematics, making me the sole student with a grade exceeding 90%. In physics, I earned a 93% score, while in mathematics and academic literacy, I achieved 84% and 85%, respectively. Lastly, in computing, I secured a 75% grade. So i agree you do not really need too much hours to efficiently study.

Bro, it's one the best videos I ever watched about studying! Thank You :) In my last year of high school in Brazil, I committed some mistakes like spending hours of my afternoon just studying the theory without exercises and active recalling. Nowadays I see the difference between studying hard and studying smart. I recommend the book: "Aprendendo Inteligência" (Learning Intelligence in Portuguese) by physics teacher Pier Luiggi Piazzi.
This video is actually so helpful, that Parkinsons Law part got me real good cause i would literally be like "ight ill do it friday"and take all day to do it. Thank you man im gonna start doing this!
1:57 agreeing with you. I've seen so many people studying for 10 hours and more and do very bad at exams. The main reason is because they're simply memorising without understanding the concept. Only "memorise" is not a healthy thing and it's one of the major factors that make studying boring.
Ok that was a fire video, Collin 🔥❤️ We actually share the same thoughts about effective studying 😅 it's not about studying for hours, it's how well you study. I personally go 2-3 hours on some nights and it kept me going as a high school topper. I'd like to have a discussion with you Collin 😅
I need more of this man, currently improving my maths mark so that i can start uni CA stream, grinding for about 5 hours from 5am to 10 am consistently, practice questions till oit by the door just busting my ass off because my goal is set in stone in my mind and i will achieve my dreams ,🎉
Step 2 is a must. I practiced passive studying, and by the time I got to studying for my license exam, I used practice exam question books, and then I noticed what a waste of time reading the whole book. I felt like I barely knew the subject when I got to the questions and answers portion of the subject. I learned so much more from questions and answers books as they explain the rationale. If you have an issue you go directly to the area needing review, instead of reading the whole chapter then answering questions, getting them wrong, having to go back in the chapter to reread the area needing help in. I am recently studying for another license, and I was dreading it, having to sit in the library for hours just passive reading, and I accidentally purchased a practice exam app. Well, as I started using the exam prep app, which is active studying, using questions and answers. My retention and theory of the subject have improved significantly. I was still passive reading until your video, as I have never been taught how to study. All past instructors just tell you read the book. What a waste of time. Thanks for bringing it to light and sharing. It will come back to you for helping so many. Thank you Collin, its much appreciated, and no more wasting countless hours just reading.
Thank you so much! Collin, you saved my school life, I hade noone to help me and tell me whats wrong but you made every thing clear! First a I went from d's to c's and b's , and now all A's! Thank yoh so much, I will be a great supporter from now on.

And to to do well academically, I need to do well on tests and exams. This goes without saying, but tests and exams cannot be aced without studying. Therefore, I choose to give it my all in my studies! It ultimately adds to my long term goal after all."
This will act as your motivation to plow through each material.
Additionally, set SMART goals:
S - Specific; Notice how hyper specific my example above is.
This means only about 20% of your effort matters to your overall grade. You can apply this to your studies by;
a) Focusing on the material that you are weakest at.
b) Doing your best to find out what exactly is going to be on the test.
This way, you can allocate your time wisely during your 2 hrs of daily study (Parkinson's Law). Doing the two of these will also allow you to NOT waste time on pointless topics that don't really add much to your grade.

Nursing student here in my last semester. This last semester is the most difficult and I have found that my old study method just wasn't cutting it anymore. Having to switch it up now seemed crazy, but I'm glad I did. The recall method is a game changer. Also, I have found that explaining the subject material out loud to myself as if I'm teaching someone else helps as well.
I study law and currently have a hard time focusing and studying effectively. This is the first video, where I actually truly believe everything you said, make sense and will help. And I’ve been through SO many! You just got a new subscriber 🎉
I agree. He's got the reputation to back it up as well.
I mean if your studying law doing practice questions in this way is not going to be helpful later on. Focus on study techniques that facilitate higher order learning

@@alloy9679 what study techniques are good for Law then?
@@Veilsau when looking at what study techniques to use you have to understand what type of knowledge you are learning(declarative and/or Procedural) law, in this case, is about 60% declarative and 40% procedural, using this we can figure out what techniques we want to use. 1. Practice questions(extended method)2.Generative Questions(evaluative) 3. Retrieved execution(applied). 1 and 2 are declarative interleaving techniques and 3 is procedural.

the parkinson's law was definitely my problem... thank you for the guide! such an awesome video.

This was a really REALLY nice clear-cut video in itself that doesn't waste my time like other channels (that I stopped watching) that don't really relay any valuable information in a short or long video and leave me wanting more and waste my time in the process.
Your video on the other hand gave us some really simple actionable steps and explained the concepts you presented REALLY well and actually taught us how to create DRIVE for studies and life in general.
This was really good!

This sounds so good and would like to be a party to this, is there any way I can speak with her?
She's quite an established Mr Deborah Davis, I wouldn't want to leave her info on here as it's a public platform, but since you're requesting, you can chat her on.

Hello fellow tech student! What a great video. Spaced repetition really helps in the long run. I was scared of trying it out at first, as I was afraid that I might forget the information studied in previous study sessions, but I found that to be quite the contrary. Since that point, I have always been open to new study habits, and the video really added more to my repertoire!

I forgot what this method is called but here are two things you can do.
1. Write down everything you remember about the Topic or subject you are trying to remember then after fill out/add what you missed, then repeate with another blank sheet of paper.
2. Teaching it to yourself or sombody else. Maybe record a video of you explaining a concept and why it works

One thing in myself, I always feel more confident in studying and feel like a sharper student in completing my tasks. But one thing lacks me always framing a time limit for my study and not following a specific timetable.

Your sharing strategy is really so much effective and I have already learned some of these strategy from reading books like "deep work ".
Thank u for showing me how to study effectively.
Thanks Collin you really helped me. Now I'm getting A's.
Extremely well said. Thanks so much, dude. I love this vid
this video made me more excited for my next semester of university. ive been a bad student all my life , my previous semester i procrastinated every assignment and exam after i told myself "ok i have a freaking week to do this, its easy", and still magically end up in the last day or two lol.
but now i realized the biggest factor was actually not taking the time to set meaningful goals, that are probably in the back of my head but not actually thinking actively about it. and the other one is definitely not having deep fast sessions, instead ive always been mid focused for longer hours, which depleted so much energy and time
The good part is that I am improving as a student after hearing your words

Thanks Colin I was struggling to focus now I know what do all thanks to you
I dedicate four hours to my studies daily, allocating two hours before class [4am - 6am] and another two hours before bedtime [5pm - 8pm].
5pm-8pm = 3 hrs mannn😂😂
5 hours daily is not much? huh
@@Specific12 I study two hours, if I start at 5pm, I will finish at 7pm and if I start at 6pm I will finish at 8pm. It depends on what time I go back to res after classes.

In my last year of high school in Brazil, I committed some mistakes like spending hours of my afternoon just studying the theory without exercises and active recalling.

Guys I think he’s a huge believer of being an academic weapon.
Thank you so much Collin! ❤ This really got my life straight!! :)

I really like this quote from a book called "Dune", which emphasizes the importance of trusting yourself:
"Muad'Dib learned rapidly because his first training was in how to learn. And the first lesson of all was the basic trust that he could learn. It's shocking to find how many people do not believe they can learn, and how many more believe learning to be difficult. Muad'Dib knew that every experience carries its lesson."
