  • In this video I look at all of the Hornady/Ruger cartridges and rank them from worst to best. Let me know if you agree or disagree on how I rank them. Hope you enjoy the video! Just a clarification there are 12 Hornady cartridges and I only talked about 11. I forgot that Hornady made the 30 TC... Sorry for excluding it. I also didn't include the rimfire cartridges.

I agree, I think the timing of the 6.5 creedmoor release with affordable range finders becoming more attainable had a huge influence on longe range shooting. I have always liked the cartridge, but wished it had a little more speed. Enter the 6.5 PRC. We are living in good times when there is a factory cartridge for just about every bullet/velocity combo you want.

Just bought a .375 Ruger. The point of the .375 Ruger is to get .375 H&H performance from a shorter action and hence a less expensive rifle, because it will fit in standard length magazines and action while still using the same bolt face as a .375 H&H. How does it do this? They steepened the shoulder so it can be headspaced off of the shoulder. Now there is no need for a belt. Meaning the cartridge can have a greater diameter, and still use the bolt face from the .375 H&H which a lot of tooling already exists for again making it more affordable to manufacture a rifle in. It might not be very popular, but from a dollar to performance standpoint it is remarkable.

I’m not a fan of the 65 Creedmoor either. But you cannot deny what it has done for cartridges in general.

  • @davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009

Pretty good analysis. Ranking worst to best. Only 1 exception as I would have modified cartridges that are specific to their intended platform and primary usage. The 6mm ARC will become the next most popular cartridge as soon as production catches up with demand. It is a versatile, accurate and multipurpose round. (hunting, target shooting, competition, tactical and good for all ages to shoot). I would venture to say that it already has caught up with the 6.5 Grendel in the MSR platform in popularity and many traditional Bolt action (20"-24") will catch up in production and sales. Federal, Sierra, Remington will soon start to catch on and produce factory ammo and cases.

The 6’s in general are intriguing. If the 6 creedmoor were more available, I’d have one instead of a 6.5 creedmoor. 338 and 300 RCM should be more popular.

I am not a long range shooter. I strictly use my rifles for hunting. And i don’t reload. When the whole 6.5 creedmoor craze started, i got one. It is very accurate with many factory ammo but i quickly realized that it was “anemic” as you stated. Fortunately, i love to take kids hunting and it is perfect for this. And that’s all i use it for now. So I decided to upgrade and get a 6.5 PRC. Many places had nice rifles in that caliber up here in Canada but none of them had ammo. So I left the store with a 270 instead. For hunting under 400 yds, it is pretty much identical to the 6.5 prc. And everyone has 270 ammo. Maybe once ammo manufacturers get their act together I’ll consider it, but for now I won’t get a prc.

I wouldn't trade my 338 rcm for every round you listed and the reason the rcm did not make it because the 300 wsm and the 325wsm had already gained traction by the time these released but the 300 rcm was between 30-06 and 300wsm performance but the 338rcm was between 325 wsm and 338 win mag which made more Sense than the 300rcm and without the 300rcm the 6.5 PRC would not exist because it's the same case with shoulder bumped back and shorter oal

338 RCM released in 2008. That’s why it failed.
It’s hard to buy an new gun and cartridge when you’re worried about losing your job and your house.
There were a number of good cartridges released around that time that haven’t done great or are just now, about 15 years later really starting to get going because they released during economic turmoil. 327 federal is a good handgun cartridge that struggled to the point of nearly not existing for a while but is catching some steam with Ruger still producing a good number of guns and Henry jumping on as well

A lot of the Hornady/Ruger cartridges released in 2008. 375 Ruger, 300 RCM, 338 RCM, 6.5 Creedmoor... it would explain a slow start. I just don't think the 338 RCM and 300 RCM will ever become popular

    • @danielboggan2479
      @danielboggan2479 Рік тому +1

@@ReloadingWeatherby the RCM’s are basically dead, which I think is a shame because while they didn’t reinvent the wheel they did provide good performance in a shorter, more nimble package. Like you pointed out, 300 RCM with a 20inch barrel, short action rifle is on par or better than 30-06 out of a 24 inch barrel with a longer action. You can suppress the RCM and still have a gun with the same OAL as a normal 30-06.

I agree with almost everything. 6 arc is a lot more popular than you think. Not with the average Joe who doesn't reload or shoot a lot. But lots of people in the long range prs stuff are switching to it cause it gets almost 6mm creedmoor performance but with way less recoil so you can spot misses easier. So if you looked at numbers on brass sold or converted to 6mm arc you would be surprised. This year I shot 7 000+ loaded rounds of just 6 arc. That's more than most people shoot in a lifetime. Competition shooters make up the majority of most of the market. Check out the 6 prc primal by primal rights. They are claiming they are getting a ridiculous amount of life on the brass.

I have the 6ARC in both a bolt gun and a gas gun. It is fantastic in my budget target rifle setup (Cheap Savage in a Chassis). The gun is so accurate I don't fire my 6CM anymore. I have not found it hard to find in the stores. The issue is they have not sold brass to the market since the pandemic forcing people to convert 6.5G to 6ARC. Your ranking is about right. 6mm Creedmoor is dominating long range precision matches. It is preferred over the 6.5 Creed by many people. Once more people realize they can buy/build an upper for their existing AR and the ammo situation moderates, 6ARC will take off. 6ARC is perfect for coyote hunting. The reason I bought a 6.5PRC is the ballistics of the 150gr+ Berger offerings. The ballistic coefficient is around .80 in one bullet.

I have two 6.5 Creedmo's in my firearms collection. One a Weatherby Vanguard, the other a Ruger Precision Rifle. Wanted to see what all the hubbub was about.
Both are fine rifles. However, I have better cartridge choices out West for mule deer, pronghorn, and elk, as well as for Midwestern whitetails. Shot some woodchuck and hogs with 'em out to distance in Texas and Michigan. They wound up just as dead, as the buck I shot last month with my '06, so I got no beef with the Creedmo'.
It ain't all that though, and in my opinion, I can just do better when I want or need to. Got a 300 PRC awaiting FFL transfer. Bullet of choice for that will be 212 grains in assorted flavors. Was looking at the 6.8 Western, but for now the 300 has my full attetion. Gonna have to kick one of the Creedmo's outta the safe, stand it in a corner somewhere to make room.

🤠 Yes! I still have a place I'm my heart for "Big Stump Thumpers", so the 375 Ruger in a Sako (Mabey in their Brown Bear Series, or something even Bigger) would be great for an Alaskan Moose hunt, where BIG Grizzlies are present! The 204 Ruger would be a fine Varment cartridge and for plinking! How About you Jess? What is next on your list? 🤔

I have the 375 and 416 both are as good as the HH and Rigby. They are not backed properly, Hornady and Ruger just let cartridges die.

I believe the 204 Ruger was formed from the now obsolete 222 Remington Magnum rather than the 222 Remington.
