I am also a "rabid fan" of the 220 Swift; I handload the 22-250 Remington as well. The 220 Swift isn't "a hair faster than the 22-250", it's at least 250 fps faster with any bullet weight. I have used the 220 Swift for 35 years and have yet to have a varmint cartridge hit as hard or shoot as flat as the Swift. The 204 Ruger doesn't even compare at all. Please bear in mind that the 220 Swift is a varmint only cartridge.
I am retired but work part time at a family owned firearm retailer in Ontario, Canada. I have fielded more than a few customer complaints about feeding problems with the Winchester Short Magnum cartridges. The 223 WSSM and the 243 WSSM were especially problematic for feeding issues. I expect poor bullet choices and brutally expensive ammunition, pre-pandemic, were issues for the Winchester Short Magnum cartridges as well. IMHO.

Some times I think that I want to get a 6.8 Western rifle. Videos like this are a good reminder that in 10 years I might not be able to get ammo for it. I’m sure the .270 will still be around long after I am.

I have a 7mm wsm and a 264 win mag. Performance on game is second to none with their fast and flat shooting capabilities. They are my go to cartridges for out west hunting. I think the 7mm wsm definitely should have been more popular but it was in my opinion overshadowed by the 300 wsm because Americans love the 30 caliber. The 270 wsm I think was also more popular because there weren't too many 270 cartridges at that time and it delivered close to 270 weatherby magnum performance with cheaper rifles and ammunition. In the end, there has been a lot of cartridges that perform very well that for one reason or another just never really took off. It's unfortunate.

Good video! Usually cartridges fail because of the extreme popularity of another cartridge their competing with. But you’re right, it’s not an exact science and their is no clear pattern. It’s odd that the 325 wsm outlasted the 7 wsm in the model 70’s.

The .264 Magnum...Winchester gave it a very short throat and used a two-diameter bullet in the original factory loads. If you look at the load data at 1:15 you'll see that the bullets are loaded to 3.21" due to that short throat. That takes away case capacity and thus velocity. Properly throated, the .264 can reach 3200 fps with a 140 grain bullet and a 26" barrel.
The .220 Swift also got some bad publicity to go along with the barrel-burner reputation when people tried to use it on large grumpy animals, with predictable results. In the long run, the .22-250 turned out to be a better design.
The 8mm Magnum was facing competition from the well-established .300 and .338 Winchester Magnums, and didn't offer much increase in performance. And it was an 8mm.
The RCM rounds seemed doomed to fail from the beginning, I believe that Ruger and Hornady seriously overestimated the potential market for these rounds. The .375 Ruger isn't setting any sales records either.
Finally, the 7mm WSM. It offered 7mm Remington Magnum performance in a short action. Umm, OK? I'm not gonna drop a pile of cash on a new rifle just to save a few ounces of weight and get exactly the same performance.
My vote for worst marketing flop-the 6mm Remington. It's actually a better round than the .243, but Remington did everything wrong. And now it's practically dead, which is a shame.

7mm WSM and almost all others became a victim of a law suite against Winchester. Courts upheld and ruled that Winchester would have to pay a royalty fee the original designer of the cartridge.

264 Winchester Magnum - Should be re-marketed with a 1-8” on a long action with free bore in the throat. The Eason why it failed was the original offering in factory ammo was 100 and 140. The 140 hot 3,200 with the two dimensional bullet offered only by Winchester. They WLRM Primer is very hot and mixed with 785 Win it was a good combination. Later H870. Both these slow burning propellants were discontinued. Writers ruined the 264 & 220 Swift with bull **it claims on throat erosion. Never addressed heat and cooling cycles along with proper cleaning. I have built several over the years and favor the 120 Nosler Ballastic Tip at over 3,300 FPS. Never had to shoot a Pronghorn, Mule or Whitetail, and sheep more than 1X. Many at 400 to 450 yards.
With the new propellants, bullets, and Federal 215 this is a wonderful cartridge. I consider it to be the prince of the plains. I also own a 6.5X300 Wby Mag. Whole lot more recoil and powder. However, it is more versatile with heavy bullets on Elk.

I have a 7mm WSM in a Browning A-bolt. I bought it before I started reloading and at the time the factory ballistics were very impressive, on the other hand reloading data was limited. I load 140 Nos ABs with RE19 and its been a great preformer in my rifle and its basically the only gun I grab come hunting season. Even though I have many others that will do the job, I like that gun and if I could by a brand new one I would. I think the lack of data that could duplicate the factory offerings had a lot to do with its downfall but nowadays it has no problem keeping up with 7Rem data.

🤔 The 6.5 Remington Magnum is Basically the Ballistic Twin of the 6.5 prc! It failed too, along with the 264 Winchester Magnum, as most people weren't looking for Any 6.5 cartridge "solution" (Short or Long Action)! So, Your Right, the 7mm Remington Magnum and 300 Winchester Magnum Were Just More Of What the General Public Was Looking For At That Time - A Better "Elk Capable" Magnum Cartridge! I don't think it will be Any Different Today and I Fully Expect the 7mm prc to outsell the 6.5 prc! For Deer, The 270 Winchester Already Had Established Itself and Was Deemed As "More Than Enough" For That Purpose! So, If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It! 🤪 The 264 Winchester Magnum Was Looking To "Solve a Problem" That Didn't Exist! 🤯 It Still Is No Different Today, for the 6.5 prc, as their is Simply No Need to Replace the 270 Winchester (Which is Why It Was Invented to Begin With)! 👨‍⚖ History is Just Simply Repeating Itself and Those Whom Don't Know Their History Are Destined To Repeat It! 😳 Stick With the 270 Winchester and Your 300 WBY Magnum and You'll Be On the Winning Side of History! 😜

Great choices! If 280 Remington had been named 7mm-06, would it be more popular? 300RCM released in 2008 was terrible timing. The economy was circling the drain....kind of like right now!!
My opinion: the reason 7mmWSM failed was due to ammo choices/ammo support. There were only two factory loadings for the first 5 years or so for all the WSMs and those were Winchester ammo (one in the black box and one in the white box). As I recall NONE of the WSMs sold well at our store..guns or ammo. We'd sell the guns for cost after deer season ended just to get them out the door and get that money re-invested into Turkey season invoices. I actually sold my 300WSM not long after leaving the store because I thought the cartridge was going to die.

You nailed this one. I have had 220 swift for a long time and stockpiled reload supplies for it because almost impossible find ammo. Love that Remington rifle for varmint hunting in west Texas. I use my 22-250 more because it’s synthetic stock with a better ballistic scope now for varmint hunting but will take the swift out occasionally. Something about those old wood grained stocks. I have hunting friend that uses his Swift for everything including elk. Goes and harvests a cow elk every year with his, as well as whitetail, mulies. I’ve seen him make some amazing shots with his over the years.
We were also just talking about the 7mm wsm and why it didn’t catch on. Ballistically it’s a truly awesome caliber, maybe even better than 300 wsm for long range retained energy accuracy because of high BC bullets for 7mm, and that is hard for me to say because I love my 300 wsm, which has proven itself for 10 years on basically any animal I have used it on from some pretty long distances. My go to rifle for whitetail and exotics now is a 280 rem and own a 40 year old 7mm mag in a BDl but if I didn’t I would look for 7mm wsm build. I think it would make the ultimate mountain rifle in a specialty built rifle and handload nolser ABLR bullets.

7WSM failed, in part, by people who think like me - not a fan of a cartridge where long bullets take up a lot of powder space. I never bought into the fad of 7RemMag power in a short action. That was primary issue for me. Just about since it's introduction, gunsmiths were modifying 7RemMag chambers to accommodate bullet seating depth for longer COAL so long as it still fit the bottom metal. One issue is most folks don't want to buy a new rifle just to send it out to have the chamber modified, and/or they don't handload so as to maximize the utility of the cartridge

In some cases it can be a big deal for a short action. If I woulda have bought a 6.5rpm instead of a 6.5-300 in my Weatherby it would have saved me around 1.75lbs.

@@Weatherby406 I agree it can be a bid deal. I'm speaking for me and those who think like I do - just disinterest in the concept when it came out. FWIW, by this Saturday I should have my new Tikka 300WSM barreled action back from my builder. He lengthened the throat so now I can seat 210 grain VLDs further out so I can add more powder and see what it will do. Got it on sale, got it because it's a Tikka, which, their actions are the same length whether you buy a 300WSM or a 300WM. The differences are the bolt stop and polymer mags. The short action mag has the block in the rear. So, in this case, my rifle will weigh the same whether it is a 300WM or a 300WSM and Tikka actions are lighter weight than 700s or 700 Clones. Nice compromise and I'm eager to shoot it. Just waiting on my new long action bolt stop to come in. I have plenty of factory long action mags on hand

Yes, they had a patent infringement and I believe that the 6.8 Western was their way of trying to get around that! But, they quickly realized that they needed to keep riding with the 270 Winchester and just give it a faster twist barrel, because the performance between it and the 6.8 Western isn't that much different, nor enough of a difference that most people were willing to leave their 270 Winchester and buy one! With the 150 grain bullet, the 6.8 Western is about 100 ft/s slower than the 270 wsm, so I would rather have a 270 wsm, between the two! But, I would still rather have my 270 Winchester, as I can get 5 rounds in the magazine and 1 in the chamber! I prefer the extra fire power myself and I can shoot the heavier bullets in a standard length action! 🎯

Interesting video! As I see all of the new cartridges being introduced, I wonder which ones will succeed and which will end up in the dust bin of history. Of Hornady’s PRC cartridges, the 7mm PRC seems like Goldilocks - just right for hunting almost anything here in North America - but will it succeed?
I do not understand the wild success of the 6.5 Creedmoor as a hunting cartridge. 270 Winchester meets or beats it by virtually every ballistic measurement. The only “problems” are the long action and increased recoil. Oh and barrel twist rates but several rifle makers are bringing out 270s with faster twist barrels and there are enough really good bullet options available. Yet go to any gun store and count the variety of 6.5 Creedmoor rifles and ammo…

I think the 7 WSM didn’t have the twist rate to make it stand out from the old 7 rem mag. Plus the short action is a handicap since longer 7mm bullets will be deep in the case unless you want to single feed. 284 win has the same issue. You want long heavy bullets and the powder to push them to decent speed, you need to run a long action or use bolt face larger than the current magnum size.

For example the 6.5 Cred , the 2506 and 270 win out preform it out to 450 to 500 yds and under where 95+ percent of Deer and Elk are taken ! Oh too soon !…….

For exactly the reasons you state, I’d get a .270 for western hunting. Where I live on the east coast, there’s really no need for anything larger than .308.

I think people got confused and overwhelmed with the short magnum craze. You had the Wsms 270,7,300,325 and then the Saums 7 and 300 come out at roughly the same time. Hunters wanted to know if it was better than their trusted 7mm rem mag. Answer No. So it died with them. Second time it died is when the reloaders and target shooters said No due to no good brass makers stepping up. When Lapua chose 7Saum and delivered excellent brass then it was game over.

I think all WSMs suffered from gun writers complaining about the feeding issues they had with early guns chambered in them. Most newer rifles have solved this issue but compound the feeding issues with the "least popular" caliber of the WSMs and that's why I think the 7mm ultimately failed.

    • @r.awilliams9815
      @r.awilliams9815 11 місяців тому +1

No. It's a much bigger cartridge, based on the .460 Weatherby necked down. It propels a 300 grain bullet some 400 fps faster than the .375 H&H, at the cost of significantly more recoil and muzzle blast. I find it unpleasant to shoot more than a few rounds, the recoil impulse is very sharp.

8mmRemMag failed cause where 8mm matters (Europe espacially Germany) we have the identical Performance in an older but more modern Cartridge that have no Belt and fit in a Standard Length Mauser 98 Action, 8x68S really Solid Brass from RWS and Norma and around since 1920 / till this day it is well known as the German Plainsgame Cartridge, i have a Mauser 77 in this Caliber and load them with 160gn Barnes TTSX at around 3300ft/s without Problem, for heavier Game i would choose 196gn Norma Oryx or good old trusty 200gn Nosler Partition or Accubond / Problem is i have to hunt Leadfree so i have gone to Barnes TTSX
Till today many German Gunmakers offer this Caliber for their Rifles (Blaser Mauser Sauer Heym)

There is one more that should fall into your list that it's in the WSM family. The 8mm 325WSM witch is a very efficient cartridge, and it's a level of that of the 8mm rem mag but more efficient, and its recoil won't remove your teeth, so why these cartridges fail is a mystery they are very effective and efficient. The 8mm rem mag is a power house, and the 325 is it modern counterpart, and you have the 300 rum that came from the 8mm rem mag or the case, I have the 325WSM and I will never give up on it or if I had the 8mm rem mag because you can load them to their full potential and any game animal of AMERICA and Africa, yes you are very right and I do not understand it ether but it does help to talk about them and try to keep them alive so yes I do agree with you, have a great day.

I will tell you why because ballistically the 7mm Rem Mag is the same. The 7mm Rem mag has this better rifles chambered in a wide range of boltaction rifles. And you can find ammo way easier.
The same thing could happen to the 300 WSM if it kicked more than the 300 Win Mag,in other words the 300 wsm is more comfortable to shoot.

264 - barrel burner in short barreled rifles by Remington. Never achieved the velocity advertised because it needed a longer barrel. 220 Swift - barrel burner and the 22-250 is almost as good so that was the end. 8 mm - a weird caliber not popular in the US. It could not compete with the 338. 300 RCM and 7 mm WSM are answers in search of a question. So they never caught on because they offered nothing over existing established calibers. You can add the .260, 7-06, 257 Roberts, 32 Wiin Special, 375 Win. , 356 Win, 6 mm Rem. 338 Federal, 358 Win. and many others who failed to the list. All looked good on paper but the shooting public deemed them impractical in real life, rightfully so or not.

🤔 The Reason Why I Don't Think The 7mm WSM Made it is the Same for All the 7mm Cartridges! If You Want to go With Lighter Bullets (150 grain and smaller), the 270 caliber bullets have higher B.C.'s, shoot flatter, and the 270 wsm will have less recoil! If You Want a Harder Hitter, the 300 WSM is suprisingly close to the 300 WM in performance in both the 190 grain and even the 210 grain bullets! Now Compare that to the 7mm bullets, Whose Bonded and Monolithic Solid "HUNTING BULLETS" Top Out at 175 grains, and most people would rather the 30 caliber option! Also, a 1 in 9 1/2 Twist Barrel Likely Didn't Stabalize All of the Heavier 7mm Bullet Options Either, as Well as the Powder Space Being Taken Up By a Longer Bullet in a Shorter Cartridge! The 7mm Caliber is a "Tweener Cartridge" - Great Balance - But Doesn't Do Better Than Either of the Other Two WSM Cartridges (Calibers), at Either Extreme! 🤷‍♂️ Their is Absolutely Nothing Wrong With the Cartridge, Just Better Options With the Other Two, For "Specialized Purposes"! 😪

    • @Patrick-xd8jv

Uh, 7mm bullets can be had pushing.7 bc. There are hunting bullets in the high .600’s bc. Go to a long range match and look for a .270. Crickets chirping

    • @ronlowney4700
      @ronlowney4700 11 місяців тому

🕵️‍♂️ There is a Difference Between "Hunting Bullets" (Bonded and Monolithic) and "Target Bullets" (Fragmenting Bullets)! The 270 Caliber has bullets from 80 grains to 180 grains, while the 7mm Caliber has bullets from 100 grams to 197 grains! So, the 270 caliber is MORE VERSITAL! Then, Beyond 175 grains, all the 7mm Bullets are "Match/Target Bullets", Not "Hunting Bullets"! Thus, If You Look at 5 grain Increments in "Hunting Bullets" (Bonded and Monolithic Solids), the B.C.'s are Higher for the 270 Caliber in 17 of the 21 Bullet Weights (from 80 grains to 180 grains), with 1 tie! Thus, When It Comes to Hunting, the 270 Caliber is both "MORE VERSATILE" and "WINS THE HUNTING B.C. BULLET COMPARISON TEST! 👨‍⚖
