      @@IaninLondon This is interesting. Because at least twice now I've encountered an issue in which my drone began stalling while flying forward. I'm pushing the stick forward, but it keeps stopping and starting over and over. I'm pretty sure I was using the standard battery both times. It just happened the other day, and I was worried it wouldn't matter it back to me. Both times it seemingly stopped as randomly as it started.

    If I recall correctly, In the old days, for good health, a lipo should really stay above 20% charge but that 20% starts at 3v per cell (100% at 4.2v) so about 3.3v. Don't have a mini 3 but on other DJI drones I've tried it on, a DJI 0% still gives a voltage reading of around 3.4/3.5v so still well above the danger level and even more above the 3.0v level at which lipo's are said to die.
    As you say, regular use down to a DJI 0% will shorten life as compared with not doing but it's nowhere near as critical as it was with non-intelligent batteries. Worth always checking though as somebody at some point will do a battery that gives extra time because they reduce this safety margin. So worth checking the actual voltages in the Fly App after landing from time to time to as these are the main levels to watch.
    Thanks again for a great test as always.

    I never understood the hover test, I get that its easy to do and you will get an "estimate" of the battery. But hovering actually steals more juice than flying slow around in low wind. So flying around is a more stable test and will show the most true result. Apart from that, great content as always.

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  2 роки тому +3

      True, but handily the DJI specs gave a hover-test spec to match it against. I have done giant figure of 8 flights before; they're boring enough after 20 minutes and unless you're flying in completely still air, you have cross winds and of course the additional strains of the constant pitching as you turn every few seconds, so for me, the hover test was defo the best way.

    I think if you set the drone into a spiral mode of some sorts and left it until the battery gave out …that would be a better battery test …I think a drone uses more energy trying to hold a hover then slowly moving,I knows sound dumb but drone utilizes battery different then you think ,the only draw back to a circle test would be having to search for it once the battery dies then again I might be full of it too…great video I always enjoy watching you tests your wind tests helped me tremendously

    I’m in the USA , I totally agree with you. We too have some rules like this that just leave you scratching your head :(. Now the FAA wants to implement a module for drones over 249g , it must be registered with the FAA, you have to have a safety certificate and the module will allow I believe the FAA and general public Your telemetry. They know where you are and how your flying. Please anybody correct me if I have this wrong. It seems like a huge overstep of Govt. But in UK a larger battery like USA changes the class. Silly. A trick I learned is if you are flying over water , let’s say you are in a boat flying your drone. It will make a home point. But if you are driving the boat all around and you lose connection, low battery etc, the drone will go back to where it took off from and land , but you might not be in that spot still ! So go into setting and change the return to home to HOVER , this way you can get to it / under it to land inside the boat instead of the water.

    if you recharge a lithium immediately after a full depletion and don't let it sit at all it will be just fine. the low voltage protection is there for just that in most devices. it is when you let them sit depleted for a period of time and they sag below safe low voltage that damage takes place, which would be a good amount of time sitting. just my two cents i have been dealing with lithium cells for about 20 years now and study them closely. always good to do some research though as some lithium cell technology is different and also there are they odd device out there with no protection that can deplete you cells below safe values.

    I love your very informative videos. I am considering purchasing a Mini 3 Pro to replace my 1st generation Mavic Air. I have 2 issues with my Air. The first one is the batteries seem to self discharge down to 50 or 60% in less than a day. The other is that it requires recalibrating the compass every time I fly and usually takes up to 10 minutes to finally get it calibrated at which point I need to change out batteries and then half the time it wants a compass recalibration because I changed the battery. I was unable to get a sunrise shot at Carhenge, Nebrasks because I went through all my 50% charged batteries trying to get the compass calibrated.
    Given that situation with the Mavic Air, I wonder if I will experience the same problems with the Mini 3 Pro.

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  2 роки тому +1

      Cheers Bruce. I think your batteries may be on their way out if they're discharging that quickly. I also recall the Air was very quick to tell you to recalibrate even if it didn't really need to.
      In truth, the Air 2, the Air 2S and the Mini 3 are lightyears ahead of the original Air; it would be a brilliant upgrade for you and you'll love the proper range you get too.

    Very interesting! Often manufacturers of the equipment and the batteries will build in some margin for a percentage left when the equipment shows 0%. Whilst I agree it’s not advisable, you can normally get away with it to a point. The downside of course is that not all manufacturers do that and you can get caught out.
    If you have an A2 CofC, surely you’re flying to those guidelines anyway, even if you’re flying

    What I would say is that putting the Mini 3 into the C1 category (

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  Рік тому

      Lots going on here.... CE is just a basic marking allowing sale in Europe. Everything has it, from your washing machine to your toaster. Numeric C classifications are what you want to look for; as yet, very few drones have them but in the UK this is not a problem as the CAA have notified us that the transition period will be extended indefinitely and the entire numeric C classes system is to be looked at again to see if fit for purpose. And yep, you're right on the intentional flying over people; use the small battery and you're fine to fly over anyone. For sub 250 gm drones, the A2CofC is not even necessary; it only affects 250-500 gm models or numeric classified models (of which there are v few as said). Cheers! :)

  • @reflexfilms
    @reflexfilms 2 роки тому +1

    How much damage does the battery cop from going this low ? - i was always taught never to go below 20% if you want to optimise the cycles that the battery will deliver.
    Going this low into the battery repeatedly will radically reduce the battery life and ability to output max power (for example to fight wind) in a short period of time
    Hopefully DJI built in some hidden reserve to protect battery chemistry!

    • @IaninLondon

    I purchased my Plus batteries from the US at a total cost of about £105 each including the shipping, from one of the largest US DJI dealers. I have noticed that on ebay some of the batteries are not original DJI batteries and are also very expensive. I now have two Plus and two Standard batteries. As most of my flying is in the countryside, the Plus batteries are ideal. I have a A2 Cof C so the restrictions for the this drone with the Plus battery just means I have to avoid delibrately overflying un-involved persons which I do anyway! If I over fly a town I use the standard batteries.

    From the 34th minute you lost standard use of the drone - for the next 6 minutes you were occupied in constantly pushing the left stick up, and couldn't do anything else. So by your demo, the plus battery gives only 34 minutes of normal use of the drone.
