  • A 1963 DuPont Show of the Week teleplay starring Tuesday Weld and Alfred Drake, directed by Franklin J. Schaffner.
Lylah Clare was the most exciting Hollywood star of the 1930’s, a wild combination of Jean Harlow and Clara Bow, until she died under suspicious circumstances. Many years later, Louie Zakin (Alfred Drake), the director who first discovered Lylah, decides to make a biopic about her. He casts Elsie Brinkmann (Tuesday Weld), an inexperienced young actress, as Lylah and tries to mold her into an exact copy of the dead star. He succeeds almost too well, and soon it begins to seem as if Lylah has really come back from the dead.
In 1968 The Legend of Lylah Clare was remade by Robert Aldrich as a film, starring Kim Novak as Lylah. The remake was a notorious flop. Many consider the original to be the superior version of the story.
(The sound cuts out for a few seconds at about 49:00, I had to snip out a copyrighted song.)

I am 26... watching these old movies and tv shows ignites memories I do not have because I didn't live during this era. But I can feel the essence almost as if I did.

This was made about a year after Monroe died and it shows... fascinating. And Tuesday Weld, once again, proves what a talented actress she was.

“ in this business in five years you’re an old lady unless you’re a star, a big star”! How true, Joan Crawford was still playing younger parts from her 40’s on up.

Kim Novak did a really good motion picture The Legend Of Lylah Clare based on this teleplay. ...This production starring Tuesday Weld is also very good.

I like Kim Novak, of course in *Vertigo* , and also the remake of *Of human bondage* with Lawrence Harvey.

I remember seeing the trailer for the movie. I was not aware Novak had the part. I would have guessed Carol Baker [who did play Harlow in 1965].

So glad you posted this hard-to-find episode. While she was great in feature films, TV really gave Tuesday a chance to shine. She really could pass for a 1930s movie star. Alfred Drake looks kind of devilish, was that intentional?

Oh yeah. This one is WAY better. The remake was just too weird. This version gets into the characters more. The music in this version is better too-- jazzy and film noir-ish. The music in the remake was incredibly schmaltzy and cheesy.

That wig. She didn't need it - Tuesday had wild blonde hair. The plot was a little difficult to discern. Was he impotent? Homosexual? Well, anyway, anything with Tuesday in it.

I don't recall if I saw the 1968 version and I haven't seen this yet, but it's ironic that Novak got the part, maybe because the plot seems to parallel Hitchcock's *Vertigo* somewhat

This sounds naive but when Zarkin says "I found Lylah in the wrong kind of movie" does he mean a stag film?

Half as long as the '68 film with Kim Novak, so I guess it's twice as good? Weld's wonderful, but it's not that interesting a story. Maybe if the "possession" angle was played up more.
