I wish, like on many other shows, they would acknowledge the existence of the announcer. As a radio guy, I paid particular attention to the announcers when I was growing up, and it would, I think, have been quite proper for the first panelist to say "thanks Johnny" or whoever might be announcing that night. The announcer is like the guy who opens the bombardier doors on an aircraft. Without him to kick things off, nothing gets done. Plus, almost always, it was the announcer who would "warm up" the audience before the show and get them in the mood for the night's entertainment. On most shows the announcer is indispensable.
Our last name is Garner and for years, when asked his name, my husband would say Garner, like James. Now no one knows who he’s talking about. Such a handsome man.
James Garner was one of a very few actors who were loved by women and truly admired by men as a "man's man)...along with Cary Grant and maybe Tom Selleck...his loss is truly our loss.
I agree! I watched "The Rockford Files" religiously while growing up. I loved his movie roles as well. Notably, "The Children's Hour" and "The Happy Housewife". He was very versatile in his portrayals.
I've always been trying to find old Maverick shows. Sadly not many on youtube or other sites. It's odd that "wild wild west" with Robert Conrad is here in great number--But Maverick seems to be hard to find.
Tedybear315 Encore Western channel plays them everyday. Along with Cheyenne ,Wanted Dead Or Alive , Death Valley Days ,Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson amd of course Gun Smoke.
"The Happy Housewife"? I believe that you mean "The Thrill of It All," in which he co-stars with Doris Day, Arlene Francis, Edward Andrews, and Reginald Owen.
Tony Randall proved to be a very astute, observant player, reading between the lines, picking up hints from ordinarily innocuous sources. With the speed record race car driver, he perceived a congratulatory tone in the _applause_ he received. When the question was posed if Mrs. Thomas was a newscaster, and she and Daly, hesitated before saying no, he immediately picked up on something and brought it back to newscasts in general, maybe it's another facet of the nightly news. And with the last contestant, he sensed from the audience reaction to every question, a certain "risibility" in their attitude towards his vocation. I think that with Mr. Randall in the fourth seat, this was the strongest panel lineup in the history of What's My Line.
@What's My Line?: I've been watching (most of) The Rockford Files these past few weeks, as - even though I loved the series - I stopped watching it after it's 2nd year (I was a kid, and other things began to occupy my time rather than TV), so, many of the episodes are new 2 me. I love James Garner's work, and you get such a good feeling from him,so, it was such a pleasure watching him here as the Mystery Guest, and hear Ms. Francis say how universally well liked he is. Thanks for posting this.
You're very welcome. And forgive me if you've commented before and I've said this before (because I probably would have), but I love your user name. From "And Then There Were None". :)
James birth surname was Bumgarner. So it was no wonder he changed it to just Garner. In 1964, he was known mostly for his character Bret Maverick on "Maverick" (1957-60), when he quit in a contract dispute. Then he starred in movies, before he starred in "The Rockford Files."
I wouldn't want to have the last contestants name.....I've always loved James Garner and he was so handsome. I loved the movie he was in with Doris Day.
James Garner always reminded me of my Dad. black hair black eyes and from Oklahoma both born in 1928. They had so much in common. Of course my Dad was never on TV or was never famous.
TheDcgj45 Mine too. Very tall, dark, handsome and funny. Sport wrecked his knees. Still wears his trousers too high. My Dad is 83. I wish he could have James Garner's sense of inner peace.
In 1969 my girlfriends and I were on Hollywood Blvd on a Saturday night and who should we see next to us in a sports car but James Garner. We followed him up into the hills but he left us in the dust. We were in a Nash Rambler sedan😂
At 16:29, Arlene asks James Garner if they have worked together. I just noticed that the film they appeared in together ("The Thrill Of It All") is now here on UA-cam -- a fairly recent addition: The Thrill Of It All! (1963) - James Garner & Doris Day
Yes, and James and Tony worked together in "Boys' Night Out." Those two films are good examples of what happens when a good cast is given a not very good script: a mediocre movie. In "The Thrill of It All," I think the most preposterous scene is Garner driving his car into a swimming pool at a fairly high speed, a speed to high even if the driveway had been there, and as if he wouldn't know something was amiss from that distance with lights on. And Arlene playing a pregnant woman at 56. A waste of talent in a silly movie.
I had such a crush on James Gardner in the 1970’s/1980’s. I was born in 1970 but at age 8 I knew he was gorgeous. I loved everything he did in tv and movies.
They were trying a revival of this show in 2014...I wonder what became of that pilot? You watch this and it's clear that any host today would have to study John Charles Daly first. I just don't see any other host, really of this show besides him, which is why the other versions suffered, I think. But then, I could say the same thing about not having an Arlene, Bennett, or Dorothy, either. Just a great show...so glad so many are online.
+Philacav I thank god they didnt. I wouldnt mind "washed up" stars and B-listers but it bet the show will be filled with reality TV personalities. TBH all of them arent bad and can be entertaining but I'd pass. Ill stick to the British panels shows and these classic american ones for now.
I have given much thought about how to produce a present day WML. It would be a tremendous challenge, especially the panelists. John Daly of course is singular, and my thought would be to handle things very much how he would. It would take a special talent. I would actually provide a partial verbatim repertoire of some of his opening patter and standard intro lines, and let the talent fill in the rest. I really have given this a lot of thought. There is a very defined structure and etiquette and attitude of grace and wit - also practical smarts - that combines to create the panel’s range of necessary talents. Mark Steyn would be very good. I think Gwenyth Paltrow could pull it off (maybe not every week). You would want to keep it far away from the grubby hands of the likes of The View. No crude or uncivilized types. Drew Barrymore might be fun. As a fill-in panelist I know Norm MacDonald is very much smart enough and up to the task. Seinfeld and Jason Alexander, yes, Julia Louis Dreyfus has the class and wit and charm. Wouldn’t that be a panel! Conan O’Brien, definitely. Geena Davis can be very elegant and is also smart, and of course Jeff Goldblum is born for it. I’d love to hear everyone’s opinions on this. Do you like my choices, or have some of your own?
@@LoudCitizen I liked Jeff and Geena for sure; Jason, and Gwyneth as maybes. I believe those are excellent choices. I could see Seinfeld and Drew as weekly fill ins. I'm stumped for who would be the Mr. Daly of the show. Good job thinking up these personalities.
Didn't know Bennett was a baseball fan( referring to the Milwaukee Braves moving to Atlanta). Tony Randall, great as usual, and James Garner, superb episode. Tony was from Oklahoma?! Learn something new every day.
How great it is to see James Garner in him prime of life. He will be sorely missed. The movie they were talking about "The Americanization Of Emily" in which he co-stars with Julie Andrews has become, unfortunately, a far too little seen classic.
He has beautiful handwriting. And everything else about him is pretty gorgeous too!
Our last name is Garner and for years, when asked his name, my husband would say Garner, like James. Now no one knows who he’s talking about.
Such a handsome man.
Pretty cool to share last name with a classy legend!
Jane Thomas was definitely ahead of her time in that field of predicting football scores.
The panel seemed stunned that a woman could be connected with TV sports. They guessed everything BUT that
Easy on the eyes, too.
Tedybear315
Encore Western channel plays them everyday.
Tony pays attention and sharp observations almost gets Mr. X quickly.
The panels for this show are G/T's best.
Tony Randall was always very bright and was a great guest panelist on WML. I love his remark at 23:07!
"G/T" ?
@@JohnEllisLearningConsultant G/T.
Goodson/Todman. Mark Goodson and Bill Todman produced the show.
A lot of shows were/are Goodson/Todman Productions.
@@echoecho3108 Thanks!
@@JohnEllisLearningConsultant 😊👍
James Gardner seems like a genuine nice man. Very comfortable with himself.
Who is that?
From the moment I Saw James Garner on the television screen he had such appeal. I remember him from years ago when I was a little watching Maverick
The football score prognosticator probably was pleased that her city of Atlanta would have an NFL team inaugurated two years from this broadcast!
RIP James Garner. Long overdue condolences to the family :-(
@What's My Line?: I've been watching (most of) The Rockford Files these past few weeks, as - even though I loved the series - I stopped watching it after it's 2nd year (I was a kid, and other things began to occupy my time rather than TV), so, many of the episodes are new 2 me.
Oh yeah! Good eye!
U.N. Owen - What a fine actor and human being.
I miss James Garner so much ❤️
Ditto! Thank goodness for UA-cam
Thanks! I love James Garner and was upset to hear of his passing. I really like The Great Escape and 36 Hours.
James birth surname was Bumgarner. So it was no wonder he changed it to just Garner. In 1964, he was known mostly for his character Bret Maverick on "Maverick" (1957-60), when he quit in a contract dispute. Then he starred in movies, before he starred in "The Rockford Files."
This has become one of my favorite channels.
Amazing that Mr. Breedlove's speed record was smashed by over 200 mph.
I wouldn't want to have the last contestants name.....I've always loved James Garner and he was so handsome. I loved the movie he was in with Doris Day.
He really was heaven, wasn't he? May he R.I.P.
Craig Breedlove would eventually set a new record at 600.601 mph in November 1965.
My Dad could be a smart ass at times. But James Garner always reminds me of my dear old Dad. Shame their both gone. Peace.
+Mandy Rah high trousers is partially an old style (pre 1965), and partially because old mens mens bodies dont support wearing lower trousers.
+TheDcgj45 My dad pretty much had the same wardrobe as James Rockford, drove a huge, fast car, and had the same sideburns.
(1963) - James Garner & Doris Day
thank you for the link, looking forward to watching it!
Thanks for putting this up in tribute to one of the greatest actors ever! RIP Maverick!
Mr Daly always seemed so excited to meet every person...
sarita schwedes gf
James entertained so many for so long. RIP
Amazing signature...dignified
I had such a crush on James Gardner in the 1970’s/1980’s. I was born in 1970 but at age 8 I knew he was gorgeous. I loved everything he did in tv and movies.
Who is that?
Thank you! Live this show!@@angelcuttill4300
Look at Arlene light up with the good looking young man :-)
Didn't know Bennett was a baseball fan( referring to the Milwaukee Braves moving to Atlanta). Tony Randall, great as usual, and James Garner, superb episode. Tony was from Oklahoma?! Learn something new every day.
Always enjoyed James Garner, whenever I saw him! Very handsome guy ♥️
I loved James he was so talented RIP
How great it is to see James Garner in him prime of life. He will be sorely missed. The movie they were talking about "The Americanization Of Emily" in which he co-stars with Julie Andrews has become, unfortunately, a far too little seen classic. It is, in my opinion, perhaps the greatest movie that puts the evil of war in proper perspective. It really is a must see for his fans. Here is a clip...The Americanization of Emily - "War is not moral" clip
Loved him in the Great Escape with Steve McQueen and Murphy's Romance with Sally Field.
Watch one special night , also with julie andrews *****
RE: contestant one "Bonneville, Utah." Bonneville Salt Flats. The name says it all.
James Garner was one of my late father’s favorites. He never missed an episode of Maverick, then later the Rockford Files. I loved Garner in Support Your Local Sheriff, the Great Escape, and Victor/Victoria. His chemistry with Julie Andrews was off the charts. I think he was her favorite leading man. RIP.
Thanks for posting this. Outstanding.
Everybody sing! "The Bonneville Salt Flats have seen some strange things / But the strangest thing yet was a jet without wings / The man who would drive her, Craig Breedlove by name, / A daring young man plays a dangerous game" -- "Spirit of America", the Beach Boys
I’ve heard through the years that James Garner is a universally acknowledged good kisser. Woohoo for all those lucky ladies.
Such a good show...and Jim Garner truly never took himself seriously. Even his humility was probably so understated that folks misunderstood him. God, he was good at everything he did and wasn't ever really sure he even wanted to do such means of work. What a guy...wish I could put out of my mind the incident at Ventura Freeway offramp...as the Valley began turning sickening!
The first contestant Craig Breedlove, is still alive at the age of 77!
Joe Postove considering as of 2014 the life expectancy of males in the US is about 86 means he's not exactly outliving himself
83 now (Jan 2021)
So is the second contestant, Jane Thomas: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Chastain
He passed in 2023.
Thank you so much. i hadn't even heard about his passing. He was one of the best!
Send Me No Flowers, one of the funniest movies ever! Always loved Doris Day and Rock Hudson together. Tony Randall was also so funny in that movie!
It’s great when the guest in question is someone hugely famous....when revealed the panel squirms in their chairs to readjust their attire....as if to make an effort to look presentable.
This aired on my 4th birthday! Cool...! I love James😍
*geez I'm old😳
I think that James Garner's sign in must have been the tiniest written signature of any mystery guest ever
He sure is "heaven". He is one of my Favorites!!!!!!
Great looking for sure but what a voice!!!
