As someone who taught Jiu Jitsu for the last 10 years, 75 a class is 100% good pay for a Jiu Jitsu coach. If you're not a world champ you should be very happy with that pay.

It’s true on many levels. All this advice on marketing applies to just about every genre of artistry. You don’t have to be the best artist, musician, martial artist, as long as you have the skills to cultivate a following and market yourself. My professor isn’t the greatest grappler in the world let alone my area but I’m constantly learning under him and he brings great value overall on top of just being a good person.

I would also include books. I wrote the first BJJ ebooks and regular books for Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, etc., that weren’t instructional back in 2009. I wrote books on Psychology, such as “Psychology of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu,” and advice for new guys such as “Grappling 101.” I even wrote inspirational books such as, “ Tapmonster, “ etc. Since I was the first, I was able to sell unchallenged for about three years. The books still sell and I have sold tens of thousands of books. I am relatively unknown, but I have probably been read by most of the current people that dominate the social media sphere now. There are plenty of ways to make money and contribute positively, you just have to find your niche. I was an academic that loved grappling, so it was natural for me to write these books.

Yea winning gold doesn't mean you're set still work to be done, putting together instructional people want to see, cool fun merch, having a personality lol. I know Gordon is supposed to be at the top with his teaching but i cannot learn bjj from him or find it difficult him and John. I found Craig teaching much more digestible and love is conceptualize game and system thinking outside the normal bounds of bjj with his bjj content. The power ride and front headlock leveled me up and before i had bunch of Gordon dvds and it just didnt stick.

The thing about private lessons he said where some people just want validation is so true. Anyone who has taught private lessons for anything knows this is the case - like 80% of the people just want to show off what they've learnt and 'impress the teacher'. Nothing wrong with that imo but is good to know this as a private instructor. If you go too hard on people paying you and start bashing out instructions on how to improve, when that's not what they're looking for (even for some people who say it is what they're looking for), then you're gonna lose clients real quick. Remember if someone's paying you X dollars to give them lessons, they got that money elsewhere, aka this thing is just a hobby for them, enjoyment is #1.

Alternatively, don't overlook ways to monetize your spare time that have nothing to do with jiujitsu. Think about a dog walking app. You could train all day, 3 days a week, work 1-4 days as you want & who's to say you can't upsell? Congratulations, i walked your dog. Your dog is walked, very, very far away & if you want your dog returned back to you, there WILL be an additional cost incurred to me; requiring an upcharge. This upcharge is completely optional of course & they are under no obligation.

Have you considered selling personalised instructionals through something like Cameo? I'd order several if you can teach my partner how to actually win... It seems to work for Bruce Buffer's extra fun money?

Why would you pay for your partner to win? That’s fucked up girl
