    Great stuff! As a 51-year-old black belt, I started at 41, doing inversions and guard and leg locks. It kept me competitive all the way until today, even against the younger guys. But I’ve noticed over the last year or so, the introduction of wrestling, wrestling up, etc… has really made things far more difficult for my game. I simply can’t wrestle up fast enough or win scrambles against the younger guys. Even blue belts give me a lot of trouble now. I’m glad to hear you guys talk about the transition of the game and the art. I can definitely see two streams developing between those that do the wrestle/jj game and the guard /pass players. And it may have everything to do with the age and ability, and those who compete and those who are doing this for a hobby.

    Great points towards the end about learning specific techniques vs letting your body learn through trial and error while rolling. As a newish purple belt, I struggle to find an interest in 95% of classes taught at my gym. I feel awful about it but it feels like most people I train with are much better than me and learning reactions and reflecting on what worked/didn't work after is the only way to really learn. I'm a hobbyist, I'd probably want more specific training if I was competing but it doesn't seem necessary.
    Ideal world would be unlimited open mats followed by reflection/note taking and then privates to to discuss any roadblocks. I don't want to learn the details for finishing a triangle when I never even try for it.

    • @rangdog01
      @rangdog01 Рік тому +2

      I'm also a purple belt hobbyist (3 years purple) and I feel the same. Although we have one class at our gym that is only for more experienced people, taught by a new-ish black belt that is where I get most of my new techniques. Nicky Rod said something similar in a pod cast a year or so ago about how that is how he learned the most was talking to people in the blue basement after live rolling. Makes sense. But at my gym, it's just non-stop shit-talk after training. Which is also fun I suppose.

    Somthjng that's happing with the audio is that dynamic range compression being applied to both mics means that when one person talk the other person's microphone turn up the background ambient noise. You can hear this when the brief moments they are both making sound the background noise ducks. Using a gate appropriately would treat this issue.
