I was born the year this movie was made. I remember there was more open land then, more beautiful countryside, a more peaceful and satisfying time to grow up in from my experience. People still had their problems but somewhat different than those of today.
I just found out this was my Grandma's favorite movie. She died 19 years ago. Kind of nice to have seen this movie. Feels like I got to share it with her. Thank you for posting this.
Maranda Zilk That's lovely. I miss my grandmother, grandfather, great uncle and aunt, and a woman I count as my surrogate grandmother--as well as a few close elderly friends who were an integral part of my childhood. It's always wonderful to discover touchstones of connection that you didn't know where there, to these amazing people whom our society does not give the respect and reverence they are due. Thanks for sharing this one with us =)
MissJessyeNorman :-) would have been nice if I didn't have so many typoes in my post. But I know what you are saying. I miss my family that has passed on.
Definitely was E G Robinson's best movie- The plot , the action, scenery, everything about it is superb- A true classic in every sense of the word- Keeps you on the edge of your seat- Interesting to see a very young Julie London, and a young Rory Calhoun together in one movie
Caught this film, for the first time, on Turner Classic Movies last week. Personally I think it is outstanding. Superb acting, excellent score and cinematography. The black & white filming and the musical score, make the eerie scenes really, well, eerie. The lighter segments of the music fit those parts of the film perfectly. I'm glad that I was able to catch this gem when TCM aired it.
Everything old is new again….. WOW !! this is awesome….. they don't make them like they use to….. these are true stars, real actors unlike today….. I FOR ONE DO NOT LIKE ALL THIS SWEARING, SEX, HORRIFIC BLOOD AND GUTS ON SCREEN……. GIVE ME 1930'S, 40'S, 50'S AND 60'S MOVIES ANY DAY.
Seriously, every movie these days practically has to have sex in it even if it has nothing to do with the movie. Can’t even watch a movie with family. I’ll stick with the old ones anyday!
I agree with you, but I don't get what you mean by everything old is new again, when at the same time you point out the stark contrast between old and new.
I always fall in love with vintage Black and White thrillers. That's been me all my movie life. Good cast. When Judith Anderson's name is mentioned in credits, you can be assured that it tends to have substance.....thanks.
This "You Tube" I find myself on more than anything else for the great movies...so much else too. I love Edward G Robinson, another one of the greats in Hollywood, a word I use carefully and never toss around unless it is (I think) appropriate. There is some very good left, a small number of great ones...but I can see why there was a time called the Hollywood Golden Age or Golden Years? Thank you for this. A great movie, like a great book or story told is one great treasure that does so much.
This movie was shot in Murphys, California. Decades later, in 1972, assistant director Don Kranze convinced Robert Mulligan to shoot "The Other" in the same house, same location.
This was an odd, unusual movie& very entertaining, also. It has such a sad, tragic human ending. All of the actors were quite good& kept the suspense going throughout the film! Thank You Timeless Classic Movies for showing this film!
The Orson Welles picture is called "The Stranger" and is also directed by Orson. Please check out "Scarlet Street" if you haven't seen it, another Fritz Lang directed Edward G. Masterpiece!
Wow, it's astounding to watch Dame Judith Anderson, the Mrs. Danvers of "Rebecca" film fame and Tony Award winning actress, play an essentially incidental role! It seems to reinforce the observation that "a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do" to get ahead in a male dominated profession. Glad, nonetheless, that she had a very well-acted career in so many venues and media throughout her long life. She was a "Star" to be adored just as was Gloria Swanson!
What a great suspense flic. I saw this in the late fortys and many times since. Its a great EGR suspense movie, so get hunkered in with a big bowl of PC & drink....enjoy
What a great movie! The gothic romanticism plays well against the more modern setting. Edward G. Robinson is superb as a man list in his obsession and past crimes. Even though the music declares a happy ending, one can't help feeling that the skeletons in Meg's closet will be popping up in her mind for some time.
Strange to say, but through all the years watching these 'older' films, like on Turner Classic Movies (the 'other' TCM😉), I've never come across this enthralling film🎞️. Plus, being an Edward G. Robinson vehicle, of which you think they, would promote more. It's listed in the description, as a thriller, but it's actually more, of a mystery🕵️!!! A mystery/thriller, to be exact. I knew Eddie was hiding something, all along. The scene at the very end, with his pickup🛻 sinking in the ice house's', water, was unbelievably shocking!!! Then, or now😮!! Very good watch😁, and thank you!!!
I bought this movie at a tag sale and ended up using it to put my self to sleep when i was having trouble closing my eyes. I could remember all the lines and scenes . It got to the point where I coud fall asleep after the first 5 min.
This a hidden gem..Edward G Robinson is last of an artistic generation. No mumbled line back then. A" film noir " pessimism menacing fatalism. camera used a Renaissance painters technique of "chiaroscuro" a visual use of light and shadow in uneven reflection of lighting.. not alot of intelligence in modern movies these days. Paolo
What a surprise to see the title and star. my mom loved movies, this one scared me so much, and all I remember was the red house. It still scared me after 60 some years.

A tip : watch movies at Flixzone. I've been using it for watching loads of movies recently.
I was born the year this movie was made. I remember there was more open land then, more beautiful countryside, a more peaceful and satisfying time to grow up in from my experience. People still had their problems but somewhat different than those of today.
For white males I suppose.

@@MrLyndarenaud Thank you fpr your post its excately what i was going to say
I love the psychological thrillers, and E.G. Robinson was one of the best actors of that time.
This had to be Edward G. Robinson's creepiest role ever. What an actor. Played such a wide range of characters in the course of his career.
LordZontar
Yes he did! Very BAD, Very GOOD & Very CREEPY! It's because he's a GREAT ACTOR! I wish I could see every film he was in....
E.G.Robinson an actor cameleon..great..❤
OLD Hollywood, the movies, the Actors @ Actresses HAD CLASS@ talent. A very exciting Age of movies.
He plays the ultimate psychopath. Watch him in Key largo. My favourite EGR movie is The amazing Dr Clitterhouse.
@@joegoedhart1259 If I'm not mistaken, they're ALSO both, Bogie pics🤔?? I know Bogie's in "Key Largo", but not sure of "Dr. Clitterhouse".

Now when I watch this again, it reminds me of someone's dear Grandmother's favorite movie. 😊
michele someone people say we're all connected, family. 😊
MissJessyeNorman: "touchstones of connection" finally found a phrase which perfectly describes that vague experience.
The idea - of a house in the woods that everyone avoids - just pulls you in right from the start.
Great film !! No nudity, no F'n this and F'n that just a great story with a great actor! Thanks for sharing!

I expected a simple old B-movie, but that surpassed my expectations. Quite a complex and atmospheric piece.
WONDERFUL MOVIE! Another great discovery! Thank you for uploading!
I love Edward G Robinson movies. Thank you for uploading.
An " Oscar" worthy performance by Robinson. Fabulous Rozsa music. Watched so many times that I know the dialogue.

The mother is creepy too. She starred in an important role in Rebecca, a wonderful film.
She was also in 'Cat On A Hot Tine Roof' with Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. She played Paul Newman's mother.
Jesse Baldwin played in The Ten Commandments, too.
