This is an underrated, outstanding film. Gritty and realistic, not many war pictures show the hardships of women caught up in politics and battle...it was so intense, at times I thought I couldn't take it. If I were a teacher...middle or high school, I would show it to my students. Especially those thinking of joining the military. War reduces humans almost to animals, and worse. This picture is very thought-provoking. Thank you for the upload. 🌹
Please don't insult animals. They dont rape kill torture for pleasure control bec ubthinkbu r superior and they deserve to be abused tiryured killed. No not animals. Monsters. In deepest darkest ignorance!!!
Not everyone in a military sees combat. But also. As you watch this, remember, there are militaries fighting for these same people's freedom. You cannot paint everything with a broad brush.
I saw this when I was a kid in the 60's. I loved it then. I love it now. At the end when the woman asked if wars would ever be over and change and no more wars. The same question can be asked today in 2022. The movie was powerful emotion then same as it is now. I wish there were no more wars. But I have been wishing for that my whole life. I am 69.
I saw this movie when I was a little girl, when neighborhood theaters showed back-to-back movies as the Saturday matinee. I didn't understand it then. But years later, I saw it again, many years later on TCM, and understood it. Just watched it here, and will tell my friends and relatives to check it out for themselves. Great acting from a great cast, with women as the central characters, something nearly unheard of in 1960.
I always wanted to see this movie and now I finally have the chance. I heard of it when I was much younger and was interested in it. Thanks to UA-cam for running it. ❤
I found this Film accidently, thanks for posting , an excellent film, Acting and actors, it shows, Yugoslavia, Poland, Italy had a difficult time fighting for their freedom, pity these films are not shown on commercial TV, so that the youngsters can see, what these people fought for
Like many others have posted, I saw this movie for the first time many years ago and always remembered. Wonderful to see again. Its a great movie - very powerful.
I’m not sure why I have never heard or seen this before but it’s a great film. A must see to consider yourself an aficionado of war films. Great actors and an international effort rarely seen. No typical Hollywood Rah rah America BS surrounded by corn pone stupidity. Great from start to finish.
Life or Look magazine had a serious preview on this!!! Don’t remember not loving Mangano, Basehart, Heflin, Moreau etc! It was Yugoslavia then but being that the alpine Italian region was the border , it would have been west Croatia-Slovenia which included Trieste then! This movie keeps on grabbing at the senses!!! Thanks!!!
Una extraordinaria sorpresa volver a ver esta gran película.que hace varios años atrás sólo pude observar algunos retazos.Muchas gracias por hacernos llegar tal joya del cine clásico y bendiciones por siempre desde Venezuela.
Outstanding film. I saw this only once, 0ver 40 years ago, and I've never forgotten it. The ending is ambiguous, but it works better that way...not everything has to be sewn up and certain. It ended with hope. And the great Richard Basehart was, as always, wonderful. Thank you for this...it's marvelous!
So many amazing reviews from everyone..I've never seen it n it just popped up, when I see written that some of you seen it 50 plus years ago..that is simply awesome to me, a movie that is standing the test of time
I am an American who lived and worked in Slovenia in the late 90s. I heard many stories of the war and the Partisan struggle during the war. The doctor I worked for - his mother was from a wealthy family that had been connected to the Hapsburgs before WW1. During the war, members of his family were accused of being both Nazi collaborators and Partisan supporters, depending on who was doing the accusing. After the war, when retributions began, one man never stopped calling for my doctor's mother's death as a traitor. According to the doctor, the man never stopped doing it publicly, yelling for his mother's arrest in the streets until his dying day. Judging from the language on a building, this part of Yugoslavia was either Slovenia or Croatia because Serbia and Montenegro use the Cyrillic alphabet.
We have a silly phrase going about these days for women the morning after : the walk of shame. These women being forced out of town are really experiencing a walk f shame.
When I was a kid I saw this as a trailer in a DC theater, which must has been at least 50 or years ago! Great Martin Ritt film. I forgot that he did some really interesting films during the late 50s, 60s, and 70s. This a gem of a film. If Hollywood wants to do a remake, why not this?
An amazingly daring movie for 1960, that takes an unflinching look at what it is like to live under military occupation. It explores many intriguing issues.
Just about anything I could say has been said by previous comments. However, I also saw this when I was very young. Of course, I didn't understand it either. I just watched it several times. awesome flick.
In have never started a war film , and seen it all till the end , some how i managed to finish this one. very good indeed , presuming that it was made on true facts, amazing . thank you.
A really powerful, under-appreciated movie! I saw it once on TV back in the sixties. And now watching it again I realize this was a very profound and daring movie for it's time. It's set in Yugoslavia during World War II, a part of the war that is almost unknown in the West. And unflinchingly explores issues of sexual collaboration with the enemy. It doesn't shy-away from showing brutality, and even includes a castration! It was quite daring for a 1960 movie.
+delavalmilker that sick shit is only one small part compared to the insight into the utter depravity of war and the bottomless depths to which mortals are driven in its unyeilding devastation of the human mind and spirit
Well that's what makes it a good movie. You get a glimpse of ugliness but you al so meet with the beauty and complexity of human condition. Without this, it would not be such a good movie. it would make us sick. It's time to recover from our individual and collective sickness. As much as we can.
One thing to keep in mind is that most of the Partisans were Titos men. Communists. I think these women did a reasonable thing. They were young and what diffrence did it make. There were Serbs and CRoats fighting in Russia, at Stlaingrad. I always support the side that fights Communism. If its facist well then I support the facists. If its Republicanns , I support them. Communism is evil. The Soviets closed the Churches of Russia. Hitler opened them up. Everybody wasnt mad to see the Germans come. They were welcomed in Belorus, Ukraine, Belgium. What they did to that soldier was evil. I could never support people who act like animals. Thats what they were, animals. JUst jealous because he was too old and ugly to get a woman.
My uncle joined the Spanish Blue Division to fight Communism and to get even for the atrocities committed by the reds and Soviet Comissars during the Spanish Civil War. Then he transferred to the SS Division Nordland, fought in Yugoslavia, Stalingrad and finally went MIA during the fall of Berlin. A real hero who loved freedom and hated Communism to the point of sacrificing his own life.
Thank you for sharing this hidden gem of a movie! I was only 8 years old in 1960 when my beloved and amazing mother took me too see this. No babysitters back then for s. No wonder, except for 2 thngs, I blocked this move out. All I remembered about it was that 5 women got thEir hair cropped and I remembered feeling shame. I was very innocent and naive so how fitting my recall really was. Great anti-war movie that should be seen by all.
I was born in 60 and saw this on TV when I was around 8. It did weird me out when I saw the shaved heads, my mother had just died after having cancer and lost her hair due to cobalt treatments. Always wondered what movie it was, so, after 50 years, I will watch it again.
Brilliant film, thanks. Also highly, highly recommend 'Decision before Dawn/The Deceptive Pact' from 1951. 10 out 10. Quite accurate too, P47, STGw44s, Quad flak batteries, uniforms, plot, dialogue, bombed out cities, food shortages, civilization on the brink of collapse, real WW2 vets playing their old roles etc. At the 24th Academy Awards, Decision Before Dawn was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, with Dorothy Spencer nominated for Best Film Editing. Bob Thomas praised the film in his 1951 newspaper column, describing it as "movie-making at its best. ... By using the real German cities and people, this film has created a stirring and realistic picture of a dying nation." He also praised the performances of Basehart, Merrill and Werner. Upon seeing the film, General Douglas MacArthur said "This is the finest picture I have seen this year, and I nominate it for an Academy Award."
Thanks for posting this 5-star movie. Whenever I see it, I have to ask myself if I could ever be angry enough to become so courageous? I never want to find out. Thanks.
What a wonderful movie. The acting was prefect. The actresses, the best. To throw vanity out the window with cutting of the hair. That was as brave of a thing that I know. Class. Put a lot of the movies they make now days to shame.
I vaguely remember seeing this at the local drive-in with my parents circa 1962. It was on the bill with another war movie maybe THE LONGEST DAY. Rather depressing even for a kid
What a Really *_Goooood_* WWII "psychodrama"..... and well acted throughout. Poignant / Powerful. War is frequently laden with Tough Calls. Viva La Resistance .....!!! 👍
Enjoying this Classic again last night, AMT, I noticed that the intro listed numerous names of the Costume Crew, but NOT even a single "credit" given to the Hair Stylists.....🤣
Silvana Mangano. Married to film producer Dino De Laurentiis from 1949, the couple had four children: Veronica, Raffaella, Francesca, and Federico.[2] Veronica's daughter Giada De Laurentiis is host of Everyday Italian and Giada at Home on the Food Network.
I saw this on TV when I was little and it really bothered me. I was too young to fully grasp what it was about, but when they shaved their heads, it was horrible. I'm glad to be able to see it again as an adult.

Si vis pacem para bellum
Ce dicton latin montre à quel point les hommes sont incapables de vivre en paix .
Strongly agree💐⚡

What a good movie. Not a typical war film. Gritty story showing both men and women as brave soldiers . Way ahead of its time. Should be made today.
If it were remade today, what war would it be set in?
Israel vs. Palestine? Russia vs. NATO? Other?
