Usually, the one who had written the song came up with ideas for the video, but John didn't know what to do and when Roger's partner suggested a parody of a popular soap opera, they liked it. Imo it's either about his own marriage or about his desire to quit the band. In one later interview, they asked him what had made him write the song and he answered "frustration".

This video is schizophrenic. It would have worked fine if they'd chosen one direction or the other, but the two concepts do NOT meld. And Roger makes the cutest school ever. The band went ahead with the drag concept because the Rolling Stones had done it to some degree of success in a video. Rumor always had it that Freddie hated the video because he thought it stereotyped him, but one of his greatest friends said that's absolute bunk, that Freddie actually had a great time making it.

It wasn’t the prudish US, it was prudish MTV. Queen was banned from MTV and most Americans weren’t familiar with Queen because of this ban.

You’ve had many comments as to who wrote the song, why they wore what they wore and why they performed as they did; unfortunately in America it was taken as you were initially thinking and instead of having a good laugh with the band, the American media and fans turned their backs on Queen and they never hit their shoulder have been heights in the States. I’m glad in a way because sometimes the US can swallow up bands this time however they spat them out meaning that the rest of the world got to see Queen and love them as much as we all did in the UK.
Hi Greg, Freddie was married for a while to Mary Austin; they always remained close after their divorce. Frdiie said she was the love of his life; he was bisexual but said he preferred the the girls, as friends but also loved, of his youth. Freddie left a fortune to Mary in his will. Xxxxx
Wrong on all counts, all four wrote the songs, this was John song about oppression in the world especially for females, Roger then girlfriend came up with the idea of drag and your country hated the video so much they banned it? Freddie was only the lead singer and that's his own words, there's more than 250 songs which they all wrote individually, in pairs or as a group, take being gay out of the equation and then what would you have thought it was about???

This song was written by John Deacon and it has nothing to do with being gay. The drag part wasn't Freddie's idea either. Usually, the one who had written the song came up with ideas for the video, but John didn't know what to do and when Roger's partner suggested a parody of a popular soap opera, they liked it. I suspect Freddie was the one who suggested the ballet stuff, though. John used to say that it was about women's rights, but I don't believe that for a second. Imo it's either about his own marriage or about his desire to quit the band. In one later interview, they asked him what had made him write the song and he answered "frustration".
I’m with you. I don’t buy the "Women's Rights" claim (which I never even heard before UA-cam comments). Some say John said that but, so far, nobody's been able to direct me to an actual interview of him saying it. I've never heard anyone in Queen say it was about 1 specific topic. When this came out, “Everyone” took it to mean breaking free from whatever felt constraining (which could be Women's issues, or something else entirely). I suspect John's inspiration was his mixed feelings of being torn between the needs of his growing family & the demands of being in a successful band.

The song was written by the base player and the idea to dress in drag was the drummers idea. This whole thing had nothing to do with Freddie Mercury except him singing it.
The MTV banned the video, America didn't understand this kind of British humor. The band never returned for touring to the US.
It was a spoof of a British soap. It wasn't Freddie's idea at all.. lol. But it was banned in the US because of the drag. Its a shame.. Freddie's whole body was music.. the entire group was/ is the absolute best!!!!

No that is not what the song means the song was written by the bass player John Deacon it was suggested by the drummers girlfriend that the guys all dressed in drag for this video it is them making a spoof from a British television show Coronation Street each member is dress like a member from the cast of that television show Freddy did not write the song and it has nothing to do with his sexuality at all they all are in drag pay attention
This video is schizophrenic. It would have worked fine if they'd chosen one direction or the other, but the two concepts do NOT meld. And Roger makes the cutest school ever.
The band went ahead with the drag concept because the Rolling Stones had done it to some degree of success in a video. Rumor always had it that Freddie hated the video because he thought it stereotyped him, but one of his greatest friends said that's absolute bunk, that Freddie actually had a great time making it.
